BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER 6.13 | “Dead Things”
I'll be back in the Middle Ages
I got my smile
WHAT is even the point of mind controlling a hero if it doesn't feel good. if you can't make them like it. if they don't learn to want it.
like why even bother corrupting a hero if it's only temporary. at the very least when they ARE 'freed' by their teammates there should be a lingering sense of loss that culminates over time into them realizing they MISSED being at your command so they end up tracking you down, not to stop you but to beg you to enthrall them again so they can turn their brain off in a way that was blissful to them. just saying.
#tropes #I know this sounds like a kink thing #and it likely is #but also outside of the kink there are probably a lot of people among protagonists who would welcome the relief #of not having to worry about whether or not they're making the right choices #the relief of knowing that the world isn't in their hands anymore. the relief of being freed from all their self-imposed restrictions #I'm just saying #people who treat mind control as ONLY the scary thing fail to understand that it's MORE scary BECAUSE it's appealing #that a lot of people crave even just a brief moment of not having to make hard choices #and that craving can be exploited or fed by someone with a mind control power who spends a thought for making it feel good to obey #and so you want it. and you know you shouldn't. but it was the best thing you've ever felt. but they're the bad guy. #and if you don't have another outlet. some way to feel like you can just BE instead of having to be the HERO
#eventually you'll have a bad enough day that you stop caring about the consequences #because you know the sense of consequence is the first thing that leaves when you're brainwashed #the fear of mind control is not only the fear of being under the thumb of someone who forces you to do bad things #the fear of mind control is also the fear of realizing that it's preferable to be controlled #than it is to be your own free agent in a world that pulls you in dozens of directions at once #at least with the mind control only one thing matters #at least with the mind control you don't feel lost or scared or paralyzed #at least with the mind control you can find simplicity in a complicated world #and knowing you're weak enough to go back even knowing it's not good for you? that has its own enthralling horror to it too #and people don't play with that horror enough outside of kink spaces
#all of this to say: yes. if your hero doesn't have lasting side effects from remembering what it was like not to have to care? #you're leaving free character development on the table #because there are so so so many things you can do with this if you're not afraid to explore your character's internal conflicts #you can decry the mind control as fake relief if you feel the need to #or you can say "the fact that you need this is a cry for help we didn't interpret in time" #you can even say "there's nothing wrong with needing this. just... don't go to the villain for this. there are other ways." -my personal fa #if you're really not afraid to explore character dynamics say that the villain is surprised to see the hero come back #and that by itself opens so many potential story directions with the hero-villain dynamic

“Average person is beaten up by a 13-year-old three times a year” factoid actually just statistical error. Vaurien Scapegrace, who gets beaten up by Valkyrie Cain multiple times a week, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
now for the $1,000,000 question: do you want to fuck that skeleton?!
Since I stuck some skin on skug I thought I'd toss some at cadaver to match

So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever
So, basically, for much of Tetris's history, people believed level 29 was the "last" level of Tetris, as the speed of the blocks would get so high that no human could do anything but lose; the blocks would go so fast that human hands physically could not control them. However, Tetris does not get any faster beyond that point, so if you're capable of playing level 29, you're capable of playing hypothetically infinitely.
Except Tetris, the original version for the NES, is not a hypothetical. It's a physical object, an item you can touch and hold, and it has limits. Many classic arcade-style video games have honest-to-god killscreens, where the game breaks so badly that it becomes completely unplayable. Pac-Man, famously, has a killscreen that garbles half of the playing field and doesn't spawn enough dots for the level to ever end. Tetris was assumed to be no exception, but because of the presumed-impossible difficulty of level 29, the community considered that to be Tetris's killscreen, and all high-leveled Tetris play centered around level 29 being the absolute end of your run, no matter what.
But, and if you've heard literally anything about people getting insanely good at retro games, you'll know what comes next. Of course, someone figures out how to control the game past level 29. In 2011, Thor Aackerlund discovered a technique now known as "hypertapping" (which is exactly what it sounds like, tapping very very fast) - and became the first person to play level 30.
But hypertapping wasn't enough. It was still stupidly difficult to get to, let alone past, level 30. Then this guy named Cheez shows up and finds that using an even more absurd technique, called "Rolling", which was even faster than hypertapping. People weren't just hitting level 30, but then 40, then 50, and then all the way into the 90s. Since all post-29 levels have the exact same speed, once they mastered rolling, they were pretty much good to play forever.
With levels 29+ conquered, now players could face the real killscreen of Tetris. A Tetris-playing AI got the first crash, but since it was playing a very slightly modified version (to show a larger score number, because the vanilla score counter didn't have enough digits), it only kinda-sorted counted. So the community picked apart the game's code to find where the game could hypothetically crash while completely unmodified - and found the current human record was not that far off.
So the entire community fucking scrambles to be the first person to crash Tetris, but then were confounded by another technically-not-game-ending-but-still-pretty-much-impossible-for-a-human bug; after level 138, the game stops choosing the colors for the blocks from where it's supposed to, leading it to display some truly heinously color palettes. Most of them are just ugly, but a few make the blocks you're placing next to invisible. (This was actually known about before the AI even crashed the game, and part of the reason the AI could get so much further than humans; it didn't need to visually see the blocks.)
Just next to invisible, though. You could still sorta see most of the blocks, and when you pass the level, the game pulls a new color palette, so if you can tough it out long enough to get 10 lines, you're probably gonna be able to continue your game for a while after that. It's annoying as hell, but not impossible. So, of course, the runners start getting past them and brushing up against the crashable levels.
And by runners, I mostly mean a 13 year old boy who goes by the online handle Blue Scuti. He'd skyrocketed into fame in the Tetris community relatively recently by achieving scores and levels that most adults couldn't even dream of, so of course he was among the first people to get past both impossible-palette levels, and he was able to keep going.
The game doesn't always crash in one specific spot, though. It just starts having a chance to crash after a certain point. You might have to perform some specific actions in specific windows of time to get it to crash on purpose, and it's much more likely that you'll lose control and lose your run before you achieve that goal.
Blue Scuti missed the first crash opportunity in his run. He was the first person to get that far at all, so it'd be a record regardless, but he was determined to win. He somehow keeps his cool, despite being a literal child with thousands of eyes on him (this was streamed on Twitch, of course), and never loses control of his stack, all the way until he reaches the next crash opportunity all the way on level 157.
And he fucking does it. He gets a single line clear in the middle of level 157 and the game just stops. It completely crashed. A 13 year old boy nicknamed Blue Scuti is the first human being in history to crash Tetris in this way. He is the first person ever to see Tetris's real killscreen. This game is over twice his age, and he is the first to kill it dead.
This kid fucking rules.
(if you want more detail, I learned basically all of the above from this video by aGameScout, please watch it!!)
I wanted to reblog this but the images from the original are gone

My elderly father started talking about how frustrating he finds “the pronouns thing” and I was like. Oh no. He had such a good stand on this, he’s been they/them-ing his cishet siblings for god’s sake! Is he regressing?? And he was talking about how difficult it is to remember, and how onerous it feels to expect strangers to keep track of it, and I’m like oh no oh no.
Then he says, “I mean, the problem isn’t the gender thing. The problem is four words: she, her, he, and him. We got rid of stewardess and turned it into flight attendant. It doesn’t matter if the flight attendant is a man or woman, so we got rid of it. We just need to get rid of those. I don’t need to know.”
“You don’t need to know… people’s gender?”
“No. I don’t care, I don’t need to know, and I don’t want to remember it.”
So we can relax. It’s just a continuation of his crusade to they/them the world. He doesn’t want to remember anyone’s gender. He’s abolishing the genders.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer as tumblr text posts 24/?
was thinking about if spike was cursed like angel to lose his soul if he had a moment of pure happiness and would he be able to have an enduring romantic relationship with buffy in the absence of sex, would it be enough for either of them yadda yadda and then i realized what am i even thinking?? sex??? spike would lose his soul bc buffy preset the microwave to nuke blood for just the right amount of time, spike would lose his soul bc buffy passed him the cereal box, spike would lose his soul bc of the way buffy’s butt looks in those pants, spike would lose his soul bc buffy laughed at one of his jokes, spike would lose his soul bc a light breeze blew a strand of her hair into his face, spike would lose his soul bc buffy-
another thing buffy and spike have in common is FASHION, they both truly Understand the power (literally POWER) of self expression through clothing/hair/jewelry etc. buffy’s cross necklaces are just the most obvious and functional manifestation of her creative expression of her power and protection. sure Angel gives her that one cross but we see her wearing TONS of crosses, dainty, large, bejeweled, colorful, you name it, buffy’s got it! she constantly says to the PTB “oh hey you’ve given me this mortal burden, the weight of the world? well i can’t do anything about that but i CAN take myself to the sunnydale mall and infuse this burden with as much of my own personality and joy as POSSIBLE.” maybe she could run a tiny bit faster in sneakers or kick a tiny bit higher in sweats but it’s LETHALLY important to her that she WEARS those heals and WEARS those pencil skirts. it’s her sheer force of will to be HERSELF to her utmost ability, to be BUFFY as well as The Slayer. she embraces her girlishness because it is a source of self affirming, life affirming joy for her.
And SPIKE!!! you ever think about the maintenance that goes into a look like spike’s?? when you can’t even see yourself in a mirror????bleaching the hair, lining the eyes, painting the fingernails, taking proper care of that leather duster… spike’s reputation proceeds him but perception is key! he wants you to know that he is one with whom one should not fuck, just by looking at him. and MOREOVER spike is a hobbies guy, he’s had 100+ years to just do shit, try new things… he clearly enjoys the process of self-expression in and of itself! and i think he sees it and loves it and respects it in buffy too
#personally I think Buffy's dedication to You Can't Fight Evil if You Ain't Cute has an element of rock lee leg weights to it too tbh #like yes she is badass and unstoppable in heels and a little skirt. which means that if she encounters a bad too big #all she has to do is roll up in sweats and sneaks and she gets +1 to all her stats. it's strategic too. #also i would be intimidated by a slayer who doesn't bother to be practical bc she doesn't need to
