Dreamling but when Hob cooks for Dream, and tries to get Dream to eat and enjoy his food, Dream looks Hob dead in the eye, silent. For a long time, Dream says nothing.
Hob is surprised and a little concerned, sensing his oldest friend is working up to something big.
Finally Dream lets it out. That being the lord of dreams IS being the lord of dreams - all dreams. Not just the dreams of mankind, but all other kinds. Of cats and flowers, fish and lamb, cow and bird. Shrimp and oyster.
A sombre silence comes over the two. Hob thinks back to how Dream barely - never - eats in the Waking. To how Dream only eats foods that are dreamed of - never the actual things. To how each thing Hob's eaten - sometimes thrown away when he's been too full or simply over ordered - has had to be collected by Death.
Hob thinks he's starting to realize what it means to be an Endless. How hard it is, and how far this human-shaped thing sitting in front of him, with a veneer of human emotion, is from him.
OH AZAZEL
Is Morpheus ever ugly
You know what, lighthearted challenge to Tumblr Sandman fans because EVERY image of Dream is so fucking beautiful that it sends me right back into obsession and grief -
Can we find ONE shot of Morpheus being ugly/unglam/unattractive at all? One?
Please help, I need to cure my fixation on this fictional character.
I got you, boo

"In fact I'm starting to think I might actually be happy"
ik this has been done 100x over but I just finished Sandman and I'm dropping some of my thoughts here:
I sit with most people on that the Netflix series was a bit of a letdown in that it tried too hard to commit to both the comics accuracy and the new tone of the show - so instead of making a cathartic tragedy or a hopeful new adaptation, they made a disappointing mess
of the 1st point, my biggest upset really is that the tragedy was supposed to be bittersweet, sad that he died, happy that he got to be free. the series made it so that he desperately didn't want to die but died anyway.
there was no depth to this season - the first season took a very small section of the comics and breathed so much life into it. Dream's imprisonment, actually being invested in Alex's character and Lyta and Rose. Gault didn't exist before, but she was an incredible addition that enriched the story. This season failed to give any of that. I had 0 sympathy althroughout for Lyta, and they barely tried to make me care. Wanda felt like a diversity point rather than a character. Mad Hettie felt random and boring.
the New Corinthian should have been a big character, considering how huge of a role he had the entire way through the first, but he barely scratched the surface.
Johanna and Corinthian was forced as hell, and failed to make either more interesting as characters. Johanna had so much freedom, considering she wasn't strapped down to the role of John Constantine.
I had no interest in Daniel, and his presence felt like salt in the wound for Morpheus - being "better" at everything than he was, especially at being "better" at getting along with his family??
Loki, Puck, Nuala were incredibly interesting characters who I would have loved to see more of but they were so fucking shallow I couldn't care less about their dead end plotlines. I wish they would have given even 1 of them the same attention as Alex Burgess or John Dee, considering neither of those characters had any depth in the comics but were brilliant fun to watch in the series.
Same goes for Delirium, Despair and Destiny. What happened?
Despair in particular had some terrible outfit design. I have no issue changing her from the comics, there's no need for her to walk around naked like gollum, but at least keep in line with the first season? Make her greasy and unkempt, dressed in comfy clothes instead of fashionable ones. She's despair?? She's supposed to be depressed and miserable and her clothing should reflect that? Instead they did her up like she was in Bridgerton, clean hair up in a do, nice makeup (why? bareface was great in s1??), fitted dress, just.. clean in general. It didn't feel like Despair.
I think Delirium did ok but her comics looks are too iconic to beat tbh. I think some more colour could have done her good. Also tone down the fake contact lenses? Either cgi that or make it look natural?
the modern Johanna Constantine also looked like shittt I'm sorry Jenna but why was she so fucking emo? in s1 she was an emotional wreck and still looked classy and elegant. s2 just brought back the noughties emo phase. and also sexualised the hell out of her instead of giving her an actual plot they gave her gratuitous sex scene that wasn't even real and did nothing.
Desire's entire look kind of sucked?? s1 they looked scandalous but comfy. s2 they look like they're in pain, greasy, and not at all fashionable??? Like they look like a bad 80s gimick with a bad hair day?
The fucking hypocrisy of the narrative/Desire to be lecturing Dream about "killing" people?? As if Desire wasn't (self proclaimed!) the one responsible for Nada which killed her entire country and then her too. As if they they didn't cause Burgess to capture Dream, which caused the sleepy sickness that caused worldwide (universe wide?) pain and suffering? As if that didn't cause John Dee to become crazed by the Ruby and kill all those people? As if the Corinthian didnt get loose because of that? and the thousands upon thousands of other shit that they've done?? Dream never intentionally kills people, actively hates any killing he does especially when they're innocents, Desire fucking revels in it! And no one fucking defends Dream at any point? Hello? We spent all of s1 showing how Dream would not ever even indirectly kill someone who didn't attack him first. He didn't kill Alex, or John, or Rose, be didn't even kill the Corinthian, he unmade him to be remade later. And Dream was just... taking all of that from Desire, when he knew that they had forced him into a position where he would have had to not only kill, but kill family, thereby killing himself. Dream should have been furious! Delirium could have said literally anything! What happened here?
Where the fuck was Matthew. I want my bird man.
Because I’m pretty when I cry-
We may laugh at this but let us not forget that we have all wept in the rain and hoped we looked this good soggy.

I bet he'd stare at lil guy for HOURS
This would be a good show honestly. Someone get Tom Sturridge back on screen, crouching on the ground and communicating intently via gaze with a tortoise. Matthew would perch gently on its back. Merv would give it a skateboard so it could zoom around the palace. Every dream and nightmare would have to jump out of its way and be careful not to step on it because, ya know, it's the boss's tortoise.
cori at kroger makes me so unreasonably happy. he’s overjoyed to go in and touch all the human things and make the little beeps at the checkout counter
I have a fic where Cori goes to the grocery store and steals grapes before paying. It seems like a thing with Cori.
My thoughts are half formed, but sometimes it makes me a little sad that Morpheus fix-its - both the S2 and the trauma-from-fishbowl kind - all tend to happen around and as a result of, relationships with other people, especially Hob. Of course I appreciate those stories and the particular themes of rescue and healing, of giving and accepting help, of a little ray of sunshine in your life standing strong despite cosmic headwinds.
But sometimes I'm sad that Morpheus almost always comes back to life in a story that ends up being Dreamling. I've never seen him come back, you know, "for himself." For his own life, his own friends, to live his version of his own story, romantic partner or no.
I point this out I guess because the reality is that not everyone is going to have someone there for them. Or someone to come back from the dead for. Not everyone might have that special one - or they might have someone but don't know / don't feel that way. And I feel the lack of any exploration at all on the importance of healing and fighting and coming back even if you're on your own. It's not like the journey is worth less if there's nobody waiting for you at the end of the tunnel, or worse, that you can't do it if you're on your own. I know the absence of a story/theme/message doesn't mean it's non-existent, but I do think this is a realistic aspect of life that's a little under-portrayed. Sometimes we really only have ourselves, and that has to be enough for us.
So that's a sadder story and maybe not one we want to write about by choice, nor am I saying that every story needs a message or that fanfictions need to be spread across the socially optimal spectrum of messages. But there is a version of Morpheus in my head that does do this. That reflects and digs deep and reads and finds his way out, on his own and by his own will, eventually evolving into the best version of himself, and lives happily, contentedly, romantic partner or no, still flawed as we all are but living and doing his best, at peace with his role and world and creations.
self explanatory
"be gay eat eyes" best tagline ever
Having now read and listened to some of the crap Allan Heinberg has come out with after the show ended I think I understand (but still vehemently disagree with) the reason why Hob's Dream wasn't included.
It seems they really wanted the message to be that Morpheus lived on within Daniel - that he was reborn, reincarnated, or even regenerated Doctor Who style.
The problem with Hob's Dream is that it implies that that was not the case, that Morpheus's spirit lives on somewhere else separate from Daniel and Morpheus gained the freedom he so wanted. Including Hob's dream would add another layer of confusion to the message the showrunner seemed to want to convey. There could be no indication that Morpheus lived separately from Daniel.
The other problem with that is that there are too many contradictory elements in the final episode that don't back up that concept. Daniel wanting to bring Morpheus back for a start, Fiddlers Greens atrocious speech, the very concept of the Wake and saying goodbye to Morpheus and Daniel not having all of his memories.
Doctor Who regenerations are sad but also not sad because they are the same form. The doctor avoids death by regenerating every cell in their body and transforming into something new. They are the same body technically, same soul, same memories, but different physical features and somewhat different personality. It's a rebirth without a death.
Morpheus on the other hand does die. He takes his sisters hand and presumably goes to the Sunless Lands. His body disappears. Daniel and he existed at the same time and it is through whatever power in the universe that requires a Dream of the Endless to exist that transforms Daniel from 8 month old baby to fully grown Endless who has some of, but not all of, Morpheus's memories, via the green gemstone. He is otherwise a completely new person. The new Dream is more successor or heir than reborn version of Morpheus who holds Morpheus's soul within him. I can't accept that it is anything like a doctor who regeneration and it's why the ending doesn't sit well with me at all.
Its also just a really shitty message that you should die and let someone better replace you because you are depressed. He even says that to Despair and she calls bullshit on it. That's why this show is so infuriating. It's so contradictory and it's messaging is too mixed up. Morpheus should not have had to die, but even if they had to kill him off, they should have adapted Hob's dream to give us some hope that he was able to escape/find freedom another way. But I genuinely believe they thought it would be too confusing for the audience to do that.
Pretentious garbage basically. That's what the showrunner has been spouting since the show ended. Clearly he's spent too much time with the stories original author.
he doesn’t look very sentient and i acknowledge that
Corinthian cutie
lord morpheus, dream of the endless 🤍
↳ THE SANDMAN | 2.10 “Long Live the King”
Must admit I was perving on his body through his shirt like a porn addict during this profoundly tragic and emotional scene
#sorrynotsorry #longlivetheking #longliveThisKing
Its a difficult situation in the Sandman fandom where there have been comments admonishing or even making accusations of racism towards fans who struggle to accept Daniel as the new Dream.
Let me be very clear. They could have cast the most amazing most popular actor in the world as Daniel (which they kinda did lbr), but even if they had Tom Sturridge in a white wig play Daniel, I still would not have accepted him as Dream. This is nothing to do with the actor. Jacob Anderson is a phenomenal actor who certainly makes it very difficult NOT to accept Daniel as he plays him with such a beautiful innocence that he makes the character extremely compelling.
My issue has nothing to do with casting and everything to do with show writing and the treatment of Morpheus that lead him to already be the Dream that was needed, making Daniel a bit redundant to the story. The problem is that in the comic, Morpheus dies because he can no longer be Dream. He is too wrapped up in grief and loss and pain to be the Dream of the Endless the world needs. Daniel therefore becomes a better Dream. A Dream who is forgiving, understanding, and who isn't weighed down by grief and depression. (Yes i know this message is vile and cruel and abhorrent and wrong but hey that's the Sandman comic for you!)
The show pussyfooted around Morpheus's darker parts, softened him, and changed him so much that he was already the Dream the universe needed. He was forgiving, he apologised constantly, he released Alex Burgess FFS. They changed his story into one of love and sacrifice and had him work through his trauma and come to terms with his grief AND THEN THEY KILLED HIM ANYWAY.
So Daniel in the show comes across instead as this naive lost puppy who smiles more and seems more happy because ya know he's not grieving the child he had to kill, and the show claims that THAT is what was needed?
Well that's bullshit and an insult to the original dark and twisted story, whilst also making the show story meaningless cruel and a bit stupid.
Jacob Anderson is a fantastic actor, and would make a fantastic successor Dream in a universe where Morpheus survived and was able to hand over the kingdom by choice and with care and love. He does a brilliant job in a story that is flawed, shitty, and completely against him.
Because of those reasons, he won't ever be MY Dream. That doesn't mean he isn't a good Dream, but his transformation and becoming Dream is redundant in this story.
So yeah people might be angry and sad and upset and saying "Daniel isn't Dream! Bring back Morpheus!". It's not racism ffs. It's grief and anger at a story that no longer made sense. It's not an insult to a fantastic actor who took on a role that was always going to be difficult for fans to handle even if that role was played by Tom Sturridge in a white wig.
And yeah okay maybe there is some racism and bad faith complaining out there, that's unfortunately been the case in all fandoms for all shows any time a black actor is cast. I'm not denying that. But the majority of us are grieving and even in our grief can say the casting was superb, but even so, not my Dream.
Morpheus in this story should have lived. They still could have had Daniel become the new Dream, but it would be a hell of a lot easier for most people to accept, if Morpheus had lived as well.
