“Moony! Moony come here!”

A very drunk Sirius stumbled towards the younger man, a glass of butterbeer dangling precariously in his hand. Across the room, Remus glanced up from the book in his lap, letting out an exasperated sigh.

“What?” He demanded, through thinly veiled annoyance.

Sirius’ grin only broadened as he collapsed on to the couch beside Remus, spilling most of his drink. He cocked his head, looking at Remus as though it were the first time he’d seen him.

Remus huffed. “What do you want, Sirius?”

At this, the older man suddenly became very quiet, as though he were deep in thought. Finally he spoke.

“When didya get so-” he hiccupped, “-so pretty, Moons?” Sirius asked, with genuine sincerity.

Remus blinked at him in confusion. “What?”

“You’re soooo beautiful,” he looked at Remus solemnly. “Wish I could- I could be your boyfriend,” he slurred under his breath, almost regretfully.

Remus’ head snapped up, his chest shaking with stifled laughter. “Padfoot! Are you serious?”

Sirius only looked back at him sadly.

Remus shook his head in fond disbelief, “Oh Merlin- you are my boyfriend you idiot!”

Sirius’ eyes widened. “Really?” he asked, a giant smile gracing his features.

Remus rolled his eyes and smiled fondly. “Really.” He confirmed, pressing a gentle kiss to his temple. “Now come on we’ve got to sober you up,” he said, taking Sirius’ hand and dragging him away from the still raging common room Christmas Party.

“Okay, boyfriend,” Sirius complied, smiling giddily.

“What’s up with him?”

Cocking his head to the side, Sirius followed his brother’s line of sight till they landed near a window in a corner of the Gryffindor common room.

The “him” in question was James; silently leaning against the wall, staring blankly out at the snow-covered ground beneath him, his deep hazel eyes glazed over and unfocused.

Glancing at his best friend with pity, Sirius grimaced, “Oh. He gets like that sometimes. Better to let him be Reggie, he’ll be back to himself soon,” he stated with a sense of finality. Looking away, Sirius returned to his conversation.

Suddenly, James pushed himself away from the wall, making his way to the portrait and hastily exiting the common room. Watching James with a mixture of curiosity, concern, and confusion, Regulus found himself following his boyfriend despite his brother’s advice.

The cool night breeze engulfed him, piercing the protection of the castle walls. Regulus shivered. Quickening his pace, he broke into a jog.

“James!” He called, his voice shattering the fragile quiet of the night.

Turning quickly, James forced a pitiful smile on his face, a feeble effort to mask his true state.

“Oh- Reggie,” James replied, his voice sounding small. “Sorry I didn’t realize you were there.”

Regulus caught up to his boyfriend, panting quietly.

“It’s okay Jamie I just-” Regulus froze, noticing the shaky hands, watery eyes, and fake smile of the older boy.

Furrowing his eyebrows, he stepped closer.

“James? What’s going on?”

Before James could even begin to form a response, the shorter boy interrupted.

“And don’t say nothing,” he added sternly. “We both know that’s a lie.”

The words resonated in his chest, and James felt the walls inside him snap. With a quiet, shuddery gasp, he looked to the floor, suddenly finding the stone tiles infinitely interesting as his eyes welled with tears threatening to spill.

He slid to the floor, pulling his knees to his chest as his body wracked with stifled sobs.

“James?” Regulus repeated, concern and panic rising through his tone. He knelt beside his boyfriend, brushing messy curls from the older boy’s forehead.

“I’m so- fuck- I’m so fucking sorry Reg,” James whispered brokenly, lifting his head to stare at the ceiling.

Regulus’ eyebrows furrowed with concern. “You have nothing to be sorry for love,” He reassured, cupping James’ face and turning it towards his own. His thumbs gently swiped at the tears that covered his boyfriend’s cheeks.

James averted his boyfriend’s searching gaze.

“You weren’t supposed to see that,” he muttered, his voice hoarse.

Regulus moved to sit on the floor beside James. Wordlessly, he wrapped an arm around James’ shoulder, pulling him into his chest.

“C’mere,” he murmured into messy curls.

They sat in silence for a while; Regulus’ fingers weaving mindless patterns through his boyfriend’s hair.

Anchored by the cool castle walls and Regulus’ arms around him, James felt a weight lift from his chest as he realized; he didn’t have to pretend. Not with Regulus.

Snapping the door shut behind him, James left the biting cold outside, shuddering as he’s embraced by the warm comfort of his home. The smell of freshly baked cookies, vanilla candles, and tea floated through the air; reminding him that Regulus was home; and had been for a while. Fumbling with his keys, James hastily toed off his boots and shrugged his coat off, hoping his fiancé wouldn’t be too upset at his late arrival.

“Reg?” James called, eyebrows furrowing at the lack of a response. He crept quietly through the house, expecting to be met with a glare from piercing grey eyes and folded arms, but to no avail. Finally reaching their shared bedroom, he pushes the cool wooden door open with a soft creak, blinking as his eyes adjust to the dim light. Scanning the room, his eyes land on the king-sized bed in the center.

“Oh,” he thinks, a soft, fond smile playing on his lips.

Concealed under maybe 3 different blankets is his fiancé, dark curls splayed beautifully across a pillow, chest rising and falling in a slow rhythm. The moonlight peaking through the curtains illuminates the sharp lines of Regulus’ cheekbones and jaw, highlighting the light dusting of freckles that cover his face.

Humming contentedly, James closes their bedroom door with a soft click and quickly changes into a thin t-shirt and sweatpants before tiptoeing to sit on the edge of their bed.

He pauses there quietly, drinking in the peace, serenity, and innocent vulnerability of the moment. As though he sensed his presence, Regulus stirs awake, blinking sleep from his eyes.

Squinting through the darkness, his half-lidded grey orbs meet James’.

“You’re home,” he finally murmurs, voice thick with sleep.

James chuckles, the sound low and deep in his chest.

“I am,” he confirms, shifting on to the bed. “‘m sorry I was late love,” James adds, biting his lip. “My boss keeps assigning me all these projects, he’s always expecting me to stay late and finish them to cover his ass, and…” he explains anxiously; exhaustion seeping through his tone.

Propping himself up on one arm, Regulus leans forward and cuts him off with a gentle kiss.

“I’m not mad, Jamie,” the shorter man murmurs against soft lips. He presses their lips together once again, allowing the kiss to convey his sincerity. “Jus’ glad you’re home,” he adds, scooching closer so he can bury his head in James’ chest.

James exhales with quiet relief. His arms wind around the smaller man’s waist, pulling him impossibly closer. Dark curls brush his jaw line as he leans down to press a chaste kiss to Regulus’ temple.

“Go back to sleep Reggie,” James murmurs. “‘m not going anywhere.”

Admiring every intricate detail of the younger man, the dark eyelashes, the way his shoulders rise and fall with his breaths, his mind grows quiet, leaving only one thought.

“Gods I don’t ever want to leave.”

started writing my first mini fic!! it’s not done yet- bc I have absolutely no time and have to prioritize school atm, but it’s something!
