Ha ha, no, of course not.
Yahoo is a notorious repeat offender. Yahoo is the reason the “if you’re not paying money for a service, then you’re not a customer, you’re the product.” saying exists.
Here is some fully general advice: If you’re the user of a free-to-use website, and you learn that it’s being bought by a large company, then this is always, and forever, bad news. If it’s not an acquihire, then it’s something worse. You’re not a customer, you’re the product.
If we’re lucky, this will be a Livejournal-style buyout, where the site just gradually disintegrates over the course of several years. If we’re unlucky, then it’ll be a Posterous-style buyout, and Tumblr will be shut down when Yahoo goes bankrupt in six months. It is vanishingly unlikely that being owned by Yahoo will benefit Tumblr users at all.
Predictions:
More ads. Karp has a weirdly principled dislike of ads, for a guy running a free social network. Marissa Mayer is unencumbered by morals, here. If you spend a billion dollars on something, you’re gonna want a return on income.
NSFW content is probably going to be banned, or heavily restricted. (As in, “verify your age by giving us a credit card number”) Ad networks hate and fear porn, and Yahoo is going to run more ads. No other Yahoo property allows NSFW content, for precisely this reason.
They might try to restrict fan content, due to copyright/CP concerns, as Livejournal did; they might not.
Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!
I called it, five years in advance.
The prophecy was right there and we all ignored it.
Mic drop.

Tumblr made no nut November permanent
Please don’t fucking log off tumblr on the 17th as a protest. All that’s going to do is give tumblr more reason to shut this place down because of revenue loss.
Please don’t fucking log off tumblr on the 17th as a protest. All that’s going to do is give tumblr more reason to shut this place down because of revenue loss.
This is blatantly untrue
Companies do not experience one day of revenue loss and pull the plug, destroying years of work and firing dozens if not hundreds of employees.
Companies which experience loss in revenue and consumer interest make investments and changes in order to regain their users/customers. That’s why organized protests and boycotts WORK. Tumblr will NOT go down after one bad day or week, but they might be willing to listen to its userbase if we put up an organized protest. (If you don’t believe me, think about how long sites like MySpace and Google+ hang around with fractions of their previous user base, often for years.)
Yahoo paid over one billion dollars for Tumblr, and the website will not go offline because of a one-day event, so in conclusion,
DO log off on December 17th to show Tumblr that you disapprove of its recent content ban and clumsy execution of censorship.
Please reblog this version of the post to stop the spread of misinformation.
Hey, U.S. Tumblrs. Your country needs you.
In just about six weeks, on November 6, you will have the privilege of exercising your right to vote in the midterm elections. You, the people, will determine one-third of all U.S. senators and all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. And we want you to feel empowered as hell as you make it happen.
But you can only make a difference if you’re registered to vote.
National Voter Registration Day is on September 26.
Take a few minutes right now and visit NVRD (@nationalvoterregistrationday) to register anytime between now and then. Don’t forget: if you’ve recently changed your name or moved across state lines, you need to update your registration. Have questions? @plannedparenthood wants to help! This Monday, September 24, they will be answering your questions about voting. Go ahead and head over to their ask box now.
What else can you do?
Stay informed. Over the next six weeks, right up until election day, we’re going to highlight and partner up with a number of organizations that can help you stay educated about issues that matter most. We’ll put a spotlight on some of our old favorites for educational resources, like @everytown for sensible gun laws and Fight for the Future (@fight4future) for net neutrality. You can also look forward to hearing more from:
Women — There are more women running for office in 2018 than there has ever been in U.S. history. Huffington Post and and MAKERS (@makerswomen) will be interviewing some of these incumbents and newcomers.
Headcount — Headcount (@thefutureisvoting) stages voter registration drives at concerts and runs programs that translate the power of music into real action. Their goal? Change the culture of voting to turn every election—local, state, and federal—into an event worth celebrating. It shouldn’t feel like a chore.
When We All Vote — @whenweallvote is a new national, nonpartisan, not-for-profit that promises to spark new conversation around the responsibilities we all share in shaping the promise of our democracy. Namely, the responsibility of registering and voting.
#VoteTogether — #VoteTogether offers grants of $2,500 to local organizers to hold and promote nonpartisan block parties near polling places. This year Tumblr will be the financial sponsor and partner of two #VoteTogether events.
10/25 — Black Girls Vote + Tumblr present: #VoteTogether in Baltimore. BGV focuses on organizing Black women across the country to participate in local, state and national elections. Tumblr will be supporting BGV for an all-day event led by 50 of their student leaders from Morgan State University. We will then lead a march to the polls followed by a #VoteTogether block party with announcements of scholarships for some of the incredible students.
10/27 — Equity Alliance + Tumblr present: #VoteTogether in Nashville. This year will be Equity Alliance’s third #VotingIsLit celebration. EA is planning on hosting a Halloween-themed and family friendly event in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, and we want to see you there. The spookiest costume? A person who forgot to register to vote by September 26, National Voter Registration Day.
Be on the lookout for more information on these events in the coming weeks! We want you there.
Phew. That was a lot. We know. But this is important stuff. The past few years may have felt particularly exhausting to you. You’re not alone. Take care of yourselves however you can, and remember that you and your vote matter. Let your voice be heard.
And one more time, for good measure:
National Voter Registration Day is on September 26.

Deregulation strikes again.
“Free market” capitalism does NOT care about raging forest fires, it does not care about endangering firefighters, it does not care about people dying due to lack of healthcare insurance. Unregulated capatilism cares only about making profits, apparently at any and all costs.
Californians! The state’s Net Neutrality bill just left committee (8/22) and went to the Assembly floor. Contact your Assembly member and tell them to vote yes: https://twitter.com/Celeste_pewter/status/1032469352501501952
the article: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/08/verizon-throttled-fire-departments-unlimited-data-during-calif-wildfire
A greedy business being a greedy business. Virtually nobody in America trusted them but Trump and Ajit Pai had to be bitches.
“The California Legislature is attempting to pass far-reaching “net neutrality” regulations that will hurt consumers by raising prices and reducing innovation in new technologies. Tell them: #NoBorders4Internet!”
Verizon literally just throttled a fire departments data, forcing them to pay double what they were paying for the privilege of doing their jobs.
This is why we need Net Neutrality. And the American Consumer Institute probably won’t enjoy being reminded of that.
Maybe somebody should do something about that.
To let others know, the American Consumer Institute is trying to kill the new Net Neutrality bill in California and keep it from coming back at all, via astroturfing.
Watch out for anything that looks like this. As someone said…
Since the guy that killed the bill the first time is now helping the new version, Big Telecom is trying this new trick.
Don’t fall for it. Stay educated, stay informed, stay active.

California passes historic bill to restore net neutrality
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 31, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, [email protected]
Internet activism defeats fierce lobbying from big telecom. SB 822 heads next to Governor Jerry Brown, has implications for the entire country
The California State Senate just voted to approve SB 822, the strongest and most comprehensive state-level net neutrality bill in the country. The bill heads next to Governor Jerry Brown’s desk. If he signs it, it’s likely to spread to other states, and will have serious implications in the fight to restore net neutrality nationwide. The current vote count is 23-11 as some members were absent. Final vote count soon, but it has the votes needed to pass.
Yesterday the bill passed the California Assembly in a landslide 61-18 vote with bipartisan support. The move is a major victory for Internet activists who harnessed massive public outcry to pass the bill and a resounding defeat for big telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast, who lobbied fiercely against the bill and spent large sums on campaign contributions to California legislators.
“Net neutrality is the free speech fight of our generation, and we’re winning,” said Evan Greer, Deputy Director of Fight for the Future. “If there’s one thing this victory in California shows it’s that Internet users are still royally pissed off about the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality. They’re still paying attention. And they’re not going to let their elected officials get away with selling out their constituents by siding with big telecom companies.”
“No one wants their cable company to control what websites and apps they can use, how they listen to music, or where they get their news,” she added, “Governor Jerry Brown should sign this bill ASAP. Other states should then follow California’s lead, and Congress should pass the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to restore common sense protections that never should have been repealed in the first place. Despite Ajit Pai’s best efforts to hand control over the open internet to giant telecoms, net neutrality is not dead. It’s coming back with a vengeance.”
SB 822 is widely regarded as the best state-level net neutrality bill in the country. Earlier this month it passed a crucial vote in front of the same committee where it was previously unceremoniously gutted at the behest of ISP lobbyists. The second time the bill passed with all the key protections restored, complete with the blessing of the committee chairman Miguel Santiago, who has become an ardent supporter of the bill after facing massive public outcry and the threat of crowdfunded billboards in his district.
The fight over SB 822 has implications for the entire nation, and comes amidst widespread public outcry following reports that Verizon throttled service to firefighters battling the worst wildfire in the state’s history. The now-repealed FCC Open Internet Order would have provided the possibility of redress for the fire department. SB 822 would allow the State Attorney General to investigate such incidents. More than 1,000 firefighters and other first responders have already signed on to an open letter calling for the restoration of the 2015 net neutrality protections.
Giant Internet service providers like AT&T and Comcast poured enormous amounts of money into lobbying efforts to stop SB 822 and managed to gut it once in committee. They’ve even been caught funding astroturf front groups, who targeted seniors with misleading robocalls, and ran outrageous Twitter ads generating tweets targeting California assembly members that look like they’re from real constituents. One of these groups, CALinnovates, even lies about its membership, claiming Uber is a partner when the company denies it. On Thursday, an investigative report revealed that AT&T’s top lobbyist in Sacramento is not properly registered as a lobbyist, raising ethics questions.
Fight for the Future is a maintaining a click-to-call tool and public scoreboard of how California legislators voted at battleforthenet.com/california, and will continue advocacy to ensure that Governor Jerry Brown signs SB 822 into law.

I know it’s almost been a year since this started and it’s getting tiresome, but please please PLEASE do your research on who’s for net neutrality so you can put them in office this year.
I agree. It has to be a joke.
Pai is guilty as sin and we all know it.
We must focus on the elections and make sure that when Congress is taken away from the Republicans, the FCC is disbanded, and a better organization with elected officials, is formed.
Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum.
This is Brett Kavanaugh.
He has just been announced as the Supreme Court nominee, and it’s a disaster for net neutrality.
Kavanaugh has openly said he wants to make net neutrality illegal. He has a frightening track record when it comes to Internet freedom and civil liberties.
But we can stop him. If every senator who supports net neutrality votes against Kavanaugh, we will stop him with votes to spare.
Brett Kavanaugh must be stopped or net neutrality could be doomed. We’re launching an emergency campaign to convince the Senate to reject him. Will you make a donation?
Brett Kavanaugh’s opposition to net neutrality is based on a twisted interpretation of the First Amendment. According to Kavanaugh, ISPs are like newspaper editors, empowered to decide what speech is suitable to share and what isn’t.
This, simply put, is nuts. It’s like saying the electric utility can decide what we can plug in and what we can’t. And under Kavanaugh’s theory, it doesn’t matter what Congress or the President or even the voters think. Any version of net neutrality could be thrown out by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional.
We’ve fought for years to save the free and open Internet, and didn’t come this far to let the Supreme Court throw it out.
To stop Kavanaugh, we need to do exactly what we did to get that “one last vote” to restore net neutrality. We’ll mobilize the coalition of free-thinking libertarians and progressives, small businesses, and other net neutrality supporters. We’ll flood undecided Senate offices with phone calls. We’ll use the Internet to save the Internet by making sure people know what’s at stake and how they can take effective action to win.
We can win this fight. There are 52 senators on the record in support of restoring net neutrality. We only need 50 votes to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation. But we need to start now.
Will you chip in to help launch an emergency campaign to stop a judge who hates net neutrality from joining the Supreme Court?
This is from an email sent out by Sarah at Fight for the Future. Please support them if you can!
Important:
Net neutrality has been repealed
Verizon is deleting posts on Tumblr about it
Miguel Santiago is the last factor on saving net neutrality
At&t is going to pay him off to repeal it
tweet at him @santiagoAD53
call campaign office (213)538 8385
Capital office (916) 319-2953
District office (213) 620-4646
Even if you’re not californian
Tell him to advance SB 822 IN FULL and resist attempts to water it down
Or else we cannot use the internet as we do now and the big companies can control everything we see. Capitalism is destroying this and this democracy is fucked
Before net neutrality dies, I’d like to make one last post regarding Ajit Pai

The creator of the California Net Neutrality bill has killed it completely. He said that since it was so gutted, there was no point in letting what had become a fake NN bill exist.
Santiago is trying to cry “victim” on this, saying that his family was threatened, which forced him into doing this.
He also cried, “Fake News” regarding the accusations of him taking Big Telecom money.
I say: Nice Try.

BREAKING NEWS: The following states will join New York in suing the FCC to defend #NetNeutrality protections:
-California
-Oregon
-Vermont
-Washington
-Delaware
-Hawaii
-Iowa
-Illinois
-Massachusetts
-Kentucky
-Maine
-Maryland
-North Carolina
-Mississippi
-Pennsylvania
-Virginia
If your state is not on this list, make it a top priority to call and pressure your representatives to support net neutrality and challenge the FCC’s decision. If your state is included on this list continue to call and encourage your representatives to support the voices of the people who elected them in the first place. Don’t stop calling, no matter what. Don’t stop talking about net neutrality. Don’t stop pressuring your elected officials to stand with the American people over the greed of a few large corporations. The only reason the FCC is even being sued is because there was enough public outrage to inspire all of these states to actually do something about it. Don’t let that passion die out, and they won’t either.
@absolutbex look at North Carolina
This is a priority for NN supporters. Especially if your state is not on the list. Encourage people in your community to contact their representatives. Rally a NN4A group to the cause, see if you could meet with your representatives. Make your voices heard.
