Chefchaouen, a small town in northern Morocco, has a rich history, beautiful natural surroundings and wonderful architecture, but what it’s most famous for are the striking and vivid blue walls of many of the buildings in its “old town” sector, or medina.

The maze-like medina sector, like those of most of the other towns in the area, features white-washed buildings with a fusion of Spanish and Moorish architecture. The brilliantly blue walls, however, seem to be unique to Chefchaouen. They are said to have been introduced to the town by Jewish refugees in 1930, who considered blue to symbolize the sky and heaven. The color caught on, and now many also believe that the blue walls serve to repel mosquitoes as well (mosquitoes dislike clear and moving water).

Whatever the reason, the town’s blue walls attract visitors who love to wander the town’s narrow streets and snap some beautiful photos.

I have a stock format and structure I use.

Dear Person I am Writing To:

This is an optional sentence introducing who I am and work for, included if the addressee has never corresponded with me before. The second optional sentence reminds the person where we met, if relevant. This sentence states the purpose of the email.

This optional paragraph describes in more detail what’s needed. This sentence discusses relevant information like how soon an answer is needed, what kind of an answer is needed, and any information that the other person might find useful. If there’s a lot of information, it’s a good idea to separate this paragraph into two or three paragraphs to avoid having a Wall of Text.

If a description paragraph was used, close with a restatement of the initial request, in case the addressee ignored the opening paragraph.

“Modern Greek for non Greek speakers: basic level” is a Greek language learning program specifically addressed to non Greek speakers which offered for free with the enrollment to the university’s online cultural courses.

So, let’s talk today about exams. New vocabulary is here!

Examination(s) – Экзамен (экзамены) | æk-za-men (æk-za-me-ny)

Pass-fail exam – зачёт (зачёты) | za-chot (za-cho-ty)

Test – тест (тесты) | tæst (tæs-ty)

Oral examination – устный экзамен | ust-nyy yek-za-men

Term exams – сессия | s æ -si-ya

Exam week – зачетная неделя | za-chot-na-ya ne-de-lya

Student’s record book – зачетная книжка | za-chot-na-ya knish-ka

Crib sheet – шпаргалка (шпаргалки) | shpar-gal-ka (shpar-gal-ki)

Here are some student slang words and phrases:

Зачетка (za-chot-ka) = student’s record book

Иметь хвосты (i-met’ hvos-ty) = to have unpassed exams after the end of term exams | LT: To have tails

Закрыть сессию (zak-ryt’ sæ-si-yu) = to pass all exams | LT: to close the term exams

Шпора (shop-ra) = crib sheet  

Бомба (bom-ba) = crib sheet | LT: a bomb

Бомбить (bom-bit’) = to prepare or to have crib sheets | LT: to bomb

Also, mb, you know, what “халява” (ha-lya-va) is. It’s something, that you can get free in an easy way. And here is a funny Russian tradition – to hang out the window and to call “халява” in the midnight, right before the day of the examination. I have never called “халява”. Will you try to do it? :)
