as someone who used to work at a build a bear workshop and loved it, I bestow my greatest honor on the most recent hyperfixation:
single dad simon doesnât often get the chance to splurge a little extra money for his kid, but when he does, he likes giving his kid fun new experiences that he never got as a child (whether it be because of his weird cult upbringing, his mother passing away, or the time he spent in juvie). today, after getting a nice tip/bonus/commission, he decides to take his kid to the mall and end the day with visiting the build a bear workshop.
ryland is a teacher, loves it more than anything, but he does have that three month summer window of nothing to do. so he picks up the odd job here and there, and this summer he gets a gig at the local mallâs babw. itâs nice getting to interact with kids, itâs easy and fun work, and he wears a cute little apron all day (that rocky got a picture of him in as soon as he was hired). making stuffed toys, dressing them up, giving them names and new homes, itâs not exactly changing the world, but itâs the act of making memories that ryland finds really special and rewarding. when a young kid shyly approaches him at the gentle encouragement of their dad, holding out the empty skin of an axolotl, ryland gives the kid a kind smile, âhey, ready to make your new friend?â
simon swears his heart is gonna give out, watching this very patient, very sweet, very pretty man help his kid through the stuffing process and heart ceremony. his kid isnât necessarily shy, but falls on the quieter side like their father. sometimes it takes a bit of coaxing for them to come out of their shell, and this man must be capable of magic, the way his kid opens up and engages with him near instantly. the whole process only takes a few minutes, but it clearly makes his kidâs day, the way theyâre giggling and squeezing their new stuffed friend close by the end of it. simon eyes the guyâs name tag, ârylandâ, and thanks him as his kid starts wandering off to find a pair of pajamas for âstarryâ as theyâve chosen to name it. ryland stands, brushing some stray string and fluff off his apron, and beams, âhappy to help! if you need anything, let me know.â
and simon doesnât know what boldness takes over him, not to mention the fact itâs terribly inappropriate, but he blurts, âyour number.â
the other man blushes a bright pink, stuttering, âs-sorry?â
ânever mind, sorry, Iââ
âyou want my number?â ryland seems more baffled by the implication than the actual act itself, which perhaps simon should take as a good sign.
he hesitantly nods, clarifying, âyou donât have to. youâre working, I shouldnât haveââ
âno, wait, itâsââ and then ryland spits out a string of numbers. which he has to repeat when simon pulls out his phone and stares at it for a long second.
at that point simonâs kid (who he has been keeping an eye on) has found a onesie with a cute print on it that they like, and is dragging their dad towards the mini beans display, and ryland gives the pair a friendly wave as they step away.
after rylandâs shift (and enduring the relentless teasing from his co-worker who witnessed said event, ilyukhina, who then told everyone what she saw), he spots a text from an unknown number:
- itâs the guy who asked for your number earlier
- nice to meet you simon, Iâm ryland, but everyone calls me grace
- nice to meet you grace :)
and simon attaches a photo of his kid cuddling the axolotl they made together, at what looks to be a cozy diner.
- thank you again, I donât think theyâre letting go of it anytime soon
ryland coos at the cute picture, which provokes the curiosity of his best friend peering over his shoulder and scoffing, âyou are too young to be a father.â
âwhaâ Iâm notâ rocky, Iâm 37ââ
