I need to have this added to my ‘art advice’ collection.
I’ve been regularly following this advice ever since I read this tweet, You won’t believe how freeing this actually is! ADD TO IT, don’t worry about sharing it online or showing it to anyone. No more being intimidated by new sketchbooks as long as I decided it’s for “Bad Drawings” only, no more worrying about people’s reaction to it or anyone’s judgment. Surprisingly, the sketches on my ‘Bad Drawings Only’ sketchbook turn out really good, I suppose it’s because I free myself of the obligation of having to create a masterpiece on each page for the sake of impressing others or to prove to myself that I’m a real artist. It’s OK to make bad drawings.
Thank you Mr. Castellano!
Some Great Character Building Exercises
Write about what their room looks like
Write about what they carry in their purse/suitcase/backpack/etc.
Write about what they pack for vacation. Do they overpack? Underpack?
Write about what they make themselves to eat when they’re home alone
Write about their self-care routine
Write about what kind of dreams they have
Write about how they’d act on public transportation
Write about how they’d handle being stuck in traffic
Write about them being late to something important
Write about them being sung happy birthday to in a restaurant
**Feel free to add more!!*

Daily #2,272! Not always a very observant dog.
A few of my coworkers (who are board artists) have asked me what they can do to make my job as a revisionist easier, and my first answer is always

If you’ve ever tried to draw a perspective grid by hand, you know that it totally sucks butts. Here’s a quick and easy way that I use that lets me establish the basic perspective of my drawing in less than 30 seconds. This is the first 3 pages of the tutorial, and the rest of it is available on my Patreon!

someting for a friend
i just want to say, for people reblogging this, that this is called the “rule of thirds” and the tips i wrote here by no means are things that you HAVE to do! these are just tips i use for myself, i kind of made up the bubble rule and i dont even know if im using the rule right haha so there theres that! i just like to use it so i know my bubbles have a place to go
examples of me using rule of thirds to separate elements in “Rachael and Penny”
i got the information a long time ago from a thread on penciljack called Storytelling 101, specifically this image
there is tons of information on rule of thirds available, i know eyecager has a post that dips into it ….
This is also hella useful for photography composition, especially for landscape and architecture shots
@meirupo This is useful.
Some pointers I keep in mind while drawing difficult angles. Posted these on twitter last month.
i had a poll on DA so i will be doing basic how to stuff of the results
In case you don't know what to draw
- Your favorite character with clothes they would never wear. - A crack ship. - Dance poses. Breakdance poses are always better. - Backgrounds!!!! - Think about a feeling/emotion, try drawing something that would make you feel that way. - A magical/mythical creature. - Modern day AUs are always fun. - What would your fave’s room look like? - Expressions! Extra points for making them exaggerated. - Flying objects. Any kind of objects. Put some wings on a refrigerator. - Your outfit! - Design a mermaid. Or a sprite.
FREE ART PROGRAMS
So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.
Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.
Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)
Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)
GIMP - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI [cracked] - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)
iPaint - (Mac)
Paintbrush - (Mac)
Pencil - (Windows, Mac)
Paint.NET - (Windows)
Seashore [still in development, ver 0.5] - (Mac)
ChocoFlop - (Mac)
Inkscape - (Mac and Windows)
ArtRage [Demo] - (Mac and Windows)
OpenCanvas 1.1[must pay for 2.0] - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
MyPaint - (Windows)
Krita - (Windows)
Vectorian [Supports Animation] - (Windows)
Pixia[Japanese, some English versions] - (Windows)
Asperite - (Windows)
Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)
SmoothDraw - (Windows)
TwistedBrush Open Studio - (Windows)
BOUNS - CTRL+Paint [Great for teaching all kinds of stuff, like how to use digital programs.]
If you know more free programs, please add onto this!
OpenToonz has made many improvements since it’s initial release! (Windows & Mac)
Medibang Paint is a comic drawing software forked from FireAlpaca mentioned earlier in this post, and is available for mobile devices as well! (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)
Sharing is Caring :)
Autodesk sketchbook is free too ^^
Tho you have to buy the full version, but the free one is good for quick sketches
