It’s been 19 years since Columbine happened and the fact that it’s so early in 2018 and there have been numerous school shooting already breaks my heart. The fact that Columbine is no longer the high school shooting with the highest number of deaths. The fact that so little change has been made to prevent this from ever happening again is painful.
I wrote 13 victims because it took me 4 years to understand that Eric and Dylan were not victims, them being bullied DOES NOT justify their actions. What they did ended the lives of 13 innocent people. Columbine could have easily been prevented which is why we have to look at what caused Columbine and learn from it. There was lack of gun control, lack of understanding about mental health, lack of understanding medications, lack of aid from bullies. We as a society should have taken columbine as a warning and grow and improve before more copies happen, but it seems like its too late.
Finally I want to dedicate this to the victims of this tragedy, to heroic teacher that risked his life to protect the students, Coach Dave Sanders and the 12 students whose lives were taken too soon in a place that should be considered a safe place, Cassie Bernall, Steve Curnow, Daniel Mauser, Daniel Rohrbough, Lauren Townsend, Rachel Scott, Corey DePooter, Kyle Velasquez, Kelley Fleming, Isaiah Shoels, Matt Ketchter, John Tomlin.
