as a follow up...i think mayb the reason why i dig slashers is because they represent a version of evil that seems far enough away from the true brand of evil that i feel we see every day that it’s actually kind of an....escape from it, or a relief in someway? like, the evil things in real life aren’t spooky monsters in masks, they’re humans who’ve made an active decision to put their own cruelest, greediest, and most hateful interests before that of anyone else and still get to live out their lives (while still retaining the privilege of considering themselves human beings) without any punishment or retribution in most cases.

which! i think is why a lot of slasher movies are based around these concepts (like how tcm is about how capitalism has torn modern life and civility apart). it’s enjoyable because it condenses these massive concepts into individuals, and allows you to pretend that the world is safe, with the exception of the monsters in the masks and the domains in which they reside. as opposed to reality, in which the world is dangerous and kinda awful no matter where you go, and the real monsters are the ones who’re in control of it all.

like, slashers all have their “rules” that they have to play by u know. they, arguably, have limits, because they act as individuals (even if they’re often portrayed as unstoppable forces of nature). the same is... not true in the real world. yes, there are dangerous individuals, but most of the time, they’re powerful and dangerous because of the systems in place that allow them to be. even if you remove the individual, there’s still the system in place that enabled their acquisition and retention of both the mindset and the power to hurt people in the first place, and that’s not something you can just. defeat, or escape, or run away from. that to me is so much scarier than the idea of a horror-movie slasher with a chainsaw, because the “rules” in that case don’t favor the survivor, they favor the evil itself.

i hope this makes some sort of sense!

#by systems i mean like.....#capitalism. systematic and institutionalized racism + classism + etc.#compared to that. slashers are like.... not to say comical #but yeah kinda! like really. theyre cartoonish and intentionally tropey #theyre not what evil looks like in real life #(which isnt to say theyre not evil. theyre just not evil in the way that we witness and experience evil every day)#like ok....i watched house of wax recently #and like it sucked but thats not what this is about rn. so #bo to me! was muuuuch scarier than vincent #bc he Looks like the type of evil we see in real life! the type that really exists #he's an aggressive and sadistic white dude with a gun!#and i remember it standing out to me how much more uneasy i felt abt him than vincent #even tho vincent is like....knife-wielding and mask-wearing in typical slasher fashion #and i think its bc. vincent--the concept of him--isnt Real outside of the horror/slasher genre. he's a halloween costume!#bo tho...he could definitely be real. people like him are real #man i know i said this already but i hope im saying this in a way that makes sense
