This is so silly but I'm watching a short video essay on sincerity in cinema and the creator is talking about how he watched Lord of the Rings for the first time at 17. He explains that he'd grown so used to the 'ironic' meta style commentary in the movies of the 2010's that as he was watching the opening narration of LotR, he spent the entire time waiting for the joke to come. For someone to take it all back with a zinger line. He listened to Blanchett describe and explain the backstory, and he waited for the other comedic shoe to drop.
And he kept doing it. Scene after scene.
He spent the film expecting someone to make a joke about how unserious things were or to break the fourth wall or do some other self referential type thing.
Now, maybe I'm just at that point in my cycle or maybe I'm too delicate in general, but I literally teared up hearing that. Straight up cried a bit. It is so fucking sad that sincerity and genuineness is being bred out of people.
People say all the time 'this generation can't take anything seriously!' and really, is it any wonder? Younger people have been trained out of it. You are no longer encouraged to be genuine or show emotion or be honest. You are actively punished for it. In fact, you are almost guaranteed to suffer for it.
That is so fucked up. I'm sorry to go on a bit of a random ramble rant but it's so fucking gut wrenching to see younger people lose that element of themselves. You can't express your passion without being told you're 'crashing out' or 'cringe'. You have to live in this neutral state of fear of perception, and god forbid anybody step outside of it!
You're told you should only consume and succumb and be ironic and emotionless and cool.
Listen, if you're following me and you're like.... 25 or under, let's say. Please. I beg of you. Do not fall for this rhetoric. Please, for the love of all things, feel. Feel and create and be honest with yourself. Indulge in things that make you happy. Be sincere. Wear your heart on your sleeve. Do not let this hyper-capitalistic, hyper-consumerist, self-centred, individualist culture take that from you.
Bleed yourself into the work you create. Live. Don't fucking let anyone tell you different.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said ādonāt follow me if we never even had a conversation beforeā and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????
Iāve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now Iām wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that itās totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if weāve never talked before.
Also, Iām legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like itās common sense but is that really a thing?
Saw a sharp increase in my follower count after posting this. The legitimacy of it is driving me nuts so I also feel the need to say that you can follow anyone on here regardless of whether youāve interacted with them or not. People like the above mentioned blog are exceptions. Perhaps they themselves think they arenāt and therefore will act like they arenāt, but they are, trust me.
Just follow anyone you wanna follow. The worst thing that can happen is maybe getting soft-blocked by the other person, but if they do soft-block you, then they were never that worth following in the first place.
wow. really hope this isn't actually a norm taking hold with new users! this isn't facebook, you don't need to know people before following them
this is the '10 year mutuals you've never spoken to once' site
Follow! REBLOG! It's how the site works!!
this is one of the things that informs the tumblr culture most of us have, of not exposing your identity on this platform. Because i am unknown, it is fine for anyone to follow me while i post exactly whatever i am thinking without worry.
Because any given blog could be anyone, even someone from my actual life, like a coworker or family member, and? they'd never know it was me they were following, because i don't put identifying information on here.
If i want to talk about where i live i put something like "The Bay Area" (population 7.5 million) .. my name is "weaselle", my age is "older than most people tend to think, ancient to some", i never use my town name in posts, i don't use the real names of people in my life, my own first name has only been in something like 2 posts in 12 years, and never my last name. The pics i post are all of not me, with no street signs.
personally, I would never tell anyone in my life what my tumblr handle is. We all say it would be embarrassing, but also
I never have to be concerned with what if my aunt or my boss or my sister's friend's partner sees what i've written. I can be my real me here, even the me i can't be in my actual life -- if i'm closeted i can be queer here, if i'm moody i can let my moods swing here, i don't have to edit myself the same way when i'm on tumblr. It is, in many ways, my most authentic self.
I think that's a lot of us on here. We're a culture of protecting yourself and your freedom of expression by protecting your identity. It makes it a much safer website and also more, like, real, than many other social media platforms.
And it lets you both audit and inform a selection of society that compliments, adds to, or balances out your authentic self. By following. And reblogging, And being followed and reblogged.
You can know and be known in a way you might not experience elsewhere. Just don't be afraid to block and to be blocked, it hurts no one and keeps our notes and dashes pleasant.
So please, move to the tune of the follow and reblog! and keep your face hidden - this ball is best danced as a masquerade
