...Like obviously it's about more than JUST grief, but this is one of the big reoccurring themes in the story, and the Best Laid Plans arc does a beautiful job of illustrating the point without belaboring it.

One of the things I love about Cinderella Boy is the way Punko uses the method of "Show, don't tell". And I especially love it in the most recent free ep of the comic, because it's genuinely so fascinating (squeer-el rant incoming).

In this scene we see Chase sitting on a giant star and being lowered to the ground, where Buddy is waiting for him. And honestly, that's so beautiful, because it indicates the whole shift in stargoth's relationship and how Buddy is finally ready to accept Chase's love in its entirety.

In previous arcs, we've seen scenes where Chase is standing and Buddy is looking UP at him in adoration. He doesn't simply admire him, he's literally looking up at him, while he himself is sitting down, kneeling or existing at a space lower than him.

That's because, to him, Chase is something sacred. Like literally, he has seen him as an angel and his image is always framed by golden light in Buddy's point of view. A perfect halo, if you will (eheh). He looks at him as something to adore from a distance, something warm that he's too afraid to reach for, because he doesn't think he's fully deserving of it. It's just like Chase said in his song, he looks at him like he's fire and gold and Buddy walks like a shadow that has only known cold. Of course he's drawn to Chase. And he's afraid that by being near him, he's gonna stain his very being.

Chase knows that but doesn't call him out. He's just reminding Buddy that he's ALLOWED to reach, and that he's literally just a guy, not someone that Buddy needs to idolize and put on a pedestal. That way he's freeing him from his guilt of not being good enough.

By having Chase being lowered down, Punko shows that (in Buddy's eyes) he isn't this glowy untouchable presence anymore, he's the guy he loves. He's no longer looking up, but staring right in front of him, because they're at the same level now. No one is considered superior/kinder compared to the other. They're equals and that's due to the fact that Nox isn't self loathing anymore. Loving and being loved and appreciated by Chase has its impact on his self image too. And goddamnit that's how love is supposed to feel like, because when you're being truly loved, you start loving yourself as well

starts the conversation by bringing up a strange situation for the other side to wonder about, and pretends to be on the same level of cluelessness.

makes the main character of the conversation someone else, so that it'd look like his role is no more than a powerless side character with no links, in comparison

more of the last part, pretending to be an unimportant follower of circumstances

forcing the narrative by repeatedly having someone else be the subject of his own thoughts

and what kind of manipulator forgets the part where they pretend to be as surprised and new to the information as the other side, by making up a fake mis-thought they had before the "real truth hit them"?

pretending to be regretful and even offering to repent and make up for it, because he's deacon's friend right? what kind of good friend doesn't want to make up for something they didn't know they messed up?

and lastly, shifting the antagonist of the conversation back to the cult leader and fixing the viewpoint and narrative in place by affirming that wave is on deacon's side and against the evil old cult leader.

so I don't know why people needed the "I'm gonna go higher I'm pissing on the moon" smirk to feel the evil within the twink, all of these are out there 😭

of course, none of these tactics would've worked with either buddy or chase. buddy is already molded to suspect people and trusting an actually good person took chapters, while chase is way too observant and already proved to wave a number of times how good he is at reading people, so he had to keep a low profile to those two and took advantage of the fact they're often too busy with each other to appeal to the less socially sharp people. the two who seem to never have friends or anyone besides their family due to how bad they are with people , of course will be the easiest to appeal to. as someone who had to manipulate people for survival I'm mediumkey impressed 🙏

How Cinderella Boy characters act when getting a wisdom tooth removed

this totally isn't me coping with my own pain

Chase:

Is a crybaby about it before hand, ends up not being as bad as he thought

Exaggerates the pain just so he'll get pampered (but only for the first five minutes)

Then he has dance practice and suddenly insists he's fine and that he can go "it doesn't even hurt that much"

He actually has a massive headache

Needs supervision at all times to make sure he won't get up

"I already took my pain killers, it's fine now"

The entire time he's holding an icepack to his face, demonstrating that it is, in fact, not fine

Deacon:

Really nervous at first but tries to be optimistic

Unbearable pain, like three day fever type of pain

The painkillers don't help him much

"Just my luck" he thinks

His father had to get him some stronger painkillers to see if that would work

They do but they knock him out basically

It gets infected

Buddy:

Didn't think it would hurt at all but it actually does

Tries to act as if it doesn't hurt that much

"Pain killers? What are those? I don't need them"

Actually takes the pain killers after some convincing from Chase

Ends up accepting all the help he's offered because he's a big softie and an attention seeker

He breaks down in the end because he isn't used to so much care from other humans yet

Did not get any tooth removed
