“Okay, so Halloween officially is the only time of the year when you can hook up with someone while wearing a costume.” James mused, despite wearing just a suit and a simple black mask over his eyes. “Think it’s the alcohol or some fucked up fetish most of us have?”

“Oh, no. It’s definitely some sort of fucked up fetish,” Nico agreed, pursing her red painted lips for a moment before lifting her glass to them, taking a sip. “The alcohol just allows it to come out. We’re all kinky fuckers, even if we won’t admit it, don’t you think? I mean, when I was in college, I hooked up with a guy who was dressed as a nun for halloween. Most religious experience I’ve ever had.”

“Is this the part where I ask who the beautiful person is behind that mask and somehow get them to buy me a drink or better yet make fun of some of the costumes around here? I know I’m dressed as a sexy cat but that’s because I had no time to come up with something better.”

Nico let out a little laugh, peering over her shoulder at the said beautiful person behind the mask Addison was talking about. “I say go for it - what do you have to lose? It’s Halloween. Very easy to brush any akward future encounters off as a case of mistaken identity,” she pointed out.

“Well, right now I don’t know how else to say I don’t give a shit about what you’re telling me. Just do whatever the fuck you have to do to get rid of it.” Tommy shouted into his phone. Pushing the cell back into his pocket, he turned to look at the person nearest to him, to see if they had overheard the conversation. “Sorry,” he muttered, shrugging his shoulders. “Work just sucks sometimes, y’know?”

Nico looked over her shoulder as she heard the raised voice, her lips pursing together as she watched Tommy on the phone. She had known him since she was a kid, their mother’s both lawyers - occasionally working on the same side, others...not so much. Fitting that even now they were still running in the same circles. She made a little humming sound, nodding her head. “Yeah, I know,” she said, letting out a laugh. “Everything okay?” she asked.

Jamie smirked at her reaction and nodded. “People do it all the time,” he replied, “it’s fine.” He did thank his mother for replacing the slips on the cushions, clad in questionable stains from its past life. “We’ve had it for a while, and so far there’s been no sign of any bugs. Do you believe me?” Jamie glanced at her for a moment, trying to gauge the uncertainty in her eyes.

“Do they? Because I’ve never heard of people doing that in real life. Just like movies and the internet,” Nico replied, grumbling under her breath. As much as she tried to deny it and act otherwise in her day to day life, Nico was spoiled. With a capital s. “You do realize you don’t see bed bugs a lot of the time? They’re just there. Running your life. And everyone else’s who sits on your couch. It’s not that I don’t believe you, it’s that I don’t believe in secondhand street furniture.”

”Oh, I get that, I totally get that. As soon as someone tells you no, you kind of automatically become compelled to go and do it anyway. We’ve all done that at some point or another, I’m sure.” Holly smiled just thinking about it and all she’d done in the past to simply get back at people. It became second nature after a while. “Those were ridiculous and I’m pretty sure they could rot your teeth from even looking at them,” she responded with a shake of her head. “And I sound like such a mom.”

“Right? Sometimes I don’t know if my personality is actually my personality or just a series of things I did to rebel against what people were telling me,” she joked, though the comment wasn’t too far from the truth. Sometimes she wondered if she was doing things cause she wanted to or because she knew it would make her parents displeased. More when she was younger, but it still linger sometimes even now. “God, isn’t that the worst? Like, I’m 26 but sometimes I catch myself saying stuff and it’s like....holy shit, I’m a grown up now and I just sounded like it. You’re right though. Teeth and stomach all at once.”

“Not completely,” Noah replied with a stupid looking crooked grin, “and I have too kicked your ass in beer pong.” A short pause as he folded his arms over his chest trying to think of times he had won but those memories weren’t reliable. “Once or twice, probably more. That’s not important. Let’s just play.” He added on as he started making his way toward the beer pong table. He tossed the small white ball to her. “Ladies first.”

Nico couldn’t hold back the snort of laughter that followed Noah’s statement, nodding her head. “Sure, sure you have,” she said placidly, catching the pong ball he tossed in her direction as she made her way around to the other side of the table, checking the racking of the cups. “Prepare for defeat, twin,” Nico joked, a wide grin crossing her face. “You seen the parentals recently?” she asked as she prepared to make her throw, the neat toss bouncing off the rim of his front cup and into the side ones shortly after.

“There isn’t a catch.” Val argued, trying to look nonchalant but as everybody knew, she wasn’t the best actress. A long sigh left Val’s lips after Nico’s reaction, she nodded. “Ugh fine,” She groaned. “I assume you haven’t heard about the incident, honestly people overreacted in my opinion but anyway,” She paused to lick her lips, “My boss Marcus is blacklisted from almost every event in NYC.”

“The incident?” Nico echoed, a smirk crossing her face. “Blacklisted from almost any event? Okay. Two questions - which events isn’t he blacklisted from, and what the fuck did he do to manage that?”

Jamie rolled his eyes. “You’re not that far,” he said, his lips creeping into a smile. “But fine.” He knew that she knew that he truly didn’t care. “Our couch isn’t that comfortable though. We picked it up off the sidewalk. But it’s clean and we checked for bugs.” 

Nico’s steps faltered, her expression changing to one of mild disgust mixed with disbelief. “Wait. You picked it up off the sidewalk? People actually do that?” she said, her eyebrows inching higher up her face as she spoke. “Like, how thoroughly did you check for bugs? You know bed bugs are, like...an epidemic in New York City, right?”

What did people do when they didn’t go to work? Georgie had spent the first two days getting her nails done, a facial and a micro as well as a massage and all of her waxing done and was now at a loss as to what to do with the rest of her week. She loved her job, worked hard for her money, but never really knew how not to be at work. She’d spent the better half of her morning at her favourite cafe, having too many refills of coffee and an everything bagel that had tasted amazing. Finally ready to leave and do something useful, Georgie got herself another coffee to go and made her way outside, promptly knocking into someone and dropping the coffee on the pavement between their feet, “Oh God…! Sorry!” she quickly apologised, looking down to make sure she hadn’t spilt any on the other person. 

Nico had another crazy week, running between her classes, her paralegal job and her internship with not enough hours in the day to get everything done, and certainly not enough to include extra sleep in there. She was existing solely on coffee at this point, as evidenced by another run to a coffee shop to get another cup. She was just reaching out to grab the door handle when a blonde woman came out, not paying much attention and crashing into Nico before she could even make a noise in warning. Nico jumped back, avoiding the coffee from landing on her leather boots with a loud, over-dramatic grasp. “No harm, no foul,” she said in response, after bending down to check to make sure that was in fact the case. “Honestly, I’m just glad I’m not the one with spilt coffee. I think it’d be enough to drive me to tears on a day like today.”

“It’s that time of the year. Pumpkin spice lattes, uggs, leggings, scarfs and insta posts with the girlfriends of that one generic red leaf from the only tree in Brooklyn. That’s why those coffee places want deals with me, isn’t it? What’s not to get excited about?” James ranted to the person sitting next to him. “Fuck me.”

“You mean you don’t like wearing uggs with your leggings on a nice brisk fall day?” Nico said, a teasing lilt to her tone as she looked up at the ranting male. “You should try it sometime. So cozy,” she added, lifting her coffee to take a sip of it. Black - she wasn’t one to buy into the whole seasonal thing, regardless of it was pumpkin spice or candy cane or whatever. “I don’t know though - deals with a coffee place sound like a win-win. Why you so opposed?

“Usually because it’s popular or comfortable, the former on this one… obviously.” Holly had to laugh a little. “Nah, nothing wrong with it. Each to their own. Black coffee, though, huh? It’s always been too bitter for me. I’ve never been able to get past that.”

“Black coffee,” Nico confirmed with a nod of her head. “I think I started drinking it black because one of the nanny’s we had tried to convince me it was bad for me back in like....late middle school. And then it just became part of my aesthetic, and now I’m addicted to it and have been for so long there’s probably no turning back,” she added with a laugh, shrugging her shoulders. “I’m all for people following trends, but you know...those weird unicorn frappucinos everyone got into for awhile? Basically made me gag just from looking at a picture.”

“They are but they’re still thrown at your face too much, you know? Like sure have one or two on your front porch but a dozen or more? That’s unnecessary unless you’re a mini pumpkin patch.” Luke’s feelings towards the whole season was clear, except he actually enjoyed the cooler weather and gloomy days. “Right, the day right after Halloween and all the Christmas decorations come out and who can forget about the repetitive music, right?”

“Well, I hope not literally thrown at your face. Pumpkins are big. They could do some damage,” Nico deadpanned. She could see his point. She wasn’t big on camp in any sense. And she certainly wouldn’t admit liking any over the top holiday decorations. Not even the christmas lights. “I swear to god, the restaurants and stores that start playing Christmas music on legit November 1st....just why? Why? No one likes Christmas music that much. And there are only, like, five Christmas songs. It’s two months of five songs. On repeat. No wonder retail workers are always so miserable.”

           “FIne, fine, just give me a second.” Grace put on a black Led Zeppelin t-shirt, sighing to herself. She should have known better than to sleep over at Nico’s - Nico was a law student - Grace’s older sister was a lawyer - they were all crazy, if you asked  Grace. “I was..” the blonde sighed “texting.” She gave her friend a sheepish smile. “Till almost 6am.”

“Texting? Till 6 a.m.?” Nico echoed, her eyebrows raising. Don’t get her wrong - she was one of those people who managed to function on minimal sleep, but she also loved her comfort. Her bed, her lights off, no one bothering her - there was no one she’d stay up till six a.m. texting with. “With who? Do you have a new boy in your life?”

Jamie considered this, then nodded. “Alright. That’s reasonable,” he replied. “But what kind of pizza are you thinking? The only place I really like is Giorgio’s which is right by my building.” 

“I’m not picky. We can do Giorgio’s. But if you’re making me hike all the way to Williamsburg, don’t be surprised if I pass out on your couch,” Nico said. As if Williamsburg was all that far from where she lived and she wouldn’t spring for an uber home. Sometimes alcohol just made her lazy.

A sugar daddy.” Naomi sometimes felt a little bit weird talking about it, because people didn’t exactly look at that kind of relationship positively, but - it wasn’t what people thought it was. I’m having a great time with it right now, but that’s ‘cause the guy I’ve got an arrangement with is a total babe.”

“Good for you,” Nico said, her head nodding along a little. “I mean, trust me - I’ve seen my share of weird relationship arrangements. I can see how the entire sugar daddy thing can easily turn into that,” she said, lifting one shoulder up towards her ear. Her parents relationship was weird as shit - it basically was some sort of arranged relationship for mutual benefit. “You’ve got some stories, though? Spill.”

Charlie laughed at the thought of dying during bad sex. It was sort of a death wish at that point. But then he cringed, at the image of a dead naked body, which his brain pictured way too clearly and he silently blamed CSI.  “You–wha–que?” Charlie stuttered, looking at her as if was growing another head. “I’m kind of offended, I’m not going to lie. Hell, my tv is offended.” He joked with a laugh. “But mostly I am, you do realize you’re talking to an October thirteenth baby, right?” He asked, looking over at her on her side of his big comfy couch. 

“I mean, it’s not just Halloween. It’s the commercialization of all holidays. But yeah. Halloween included. It all just....is trying way too hard,” Nico replied, pressing her lips together as she raised her eyebrows up at him. “Yeah, well, I’m a July 13th baby and you don’t see me getting all up in arms about July 4th,” she pointed out, a half-smirk crossing her face.
