Slavery had been outlawed over 50 years earlier and even before that, quite a few Black British people were free citizens. Black people have lived in England since the invasion by Rome (a lot of Romans were Not White, and legionaries tended to be assigned far from their area of origin, to dissuade uprisings). They appear in church registries of births, marriages, and deaths in many towns around the country. By 1888, there were Black British neighborhoods in Canning Town (London) and several other dockside communities, including Liverpool and Cardiff (Wales), as sailors and free descendants of enslaved people settled with their families. There were also sizable communities of Chinese and Indian immigrants in London. All-white period productions are almost always ahistorical lies or pure ignorance.

There is no shared white history. Europeans all hated each other from the first settlers up until the 1500s. No Italian has even fucking heard the word “Odin” until long after (”white”) christian missionaries nearly eradicated that religion. If  you and I are both white than our ancestors probably fucking hated each other.
