The Old Masters
The term”Old Masters” refers to the most recognised European painters, working between the Renaissance and 1800′s. This category includes artists who fall within Gothic Art, Mannerism, the Dutch ‘Golden Age’ and Romanticism. This includes artists such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt.
There is one general method the Old Masters used in their painting, called the “The Flemish Method.” This method was named after the country of Flanders, where it developed to its highest point. This is an elaborate, multi-layered approach to oil painting.
Depending on the artist, there are different ways to use the Flemish painting approach. Each Master added their own modified way of painting and developed it even further, sometimes changing the approach during his lifetime. There wasn’t just one technique used by all of the Old Masters. So, the term “Flemish Method” is a generalisation of all the various methods used by the Masters at that time. Lighting and composition were used to create symbolism and tell stories within these paintings too.

George Hoyningen-Huene
George was known as a pioneer in fashion photography his work is elegant yet understated, I believe that is why is work is still relevant today. He became apart of man rays inner circle(who was a surrealist photographer) George was one of the first people to capture the haute couture type of fashion. He was the chief photographer at French vouge. In 1935 he left vouge and became apart of a rival publication harpers bazaar who are now known as the publication to show this type of photography. He moved to Hollywood shortly after this and photography some of the most famous actors of the Time including Ingrid Bergman, Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner. this was all thanks to director George cukor. He published several books within his Time.
In a lot of George’s work he uses light combined with fashion to portray a feeling of uneasiness. The shadows give a different depth to their images most of his images have been shot in black and white. Due to the time he was active but his Work still allows you to feel apart of the images. In his work he uses a lot of composition in which the model is in the middle of the frame not of to the side I feel this gives a sense of them going somewhere they are actively using the clothing. George was one of the first photographers to use colour within his images and this is partly why the director George chose to have him join his team.
Helmet Newton
Helmet newton was born in Berlin in 1920. He began working for photographer Elsie Simon AKA Yva in 1936 she was a photographer who specialised in nude and fashion photography. His family fled Germany in 1938. He landed in Singapore. Where he began working as a photographer. He moved to Australia after being told by authorities to leave. Helmet newton’s images are known as very controversial provocative images, with an edge to them. Most of newton’s work is shot on location giving a sense of street and editorial fashion. He was criticised for being overly suggestive and very risqué. His work has been seen worldwide being published in many books and exhibitions.
Within his images he has a lot of contrast in the B&W. Very deep blacks and very powerful whites. His compositions allows the viewer to get a sense of the environment around the model giving a more contemporary feel to the images. The lighting allows the photographer to be highlighted in a way the shows of the model and also the clothing that they are wearing.
