I planned to post this a couple of days ago but school kind of consumed every microsecond until recently. This has been rattling around inside my head for awhile pestering me like a little mosquito buzzing about my ear. Anyways April is coming and I wish there was a better way to say that, one that pop culture hasn’t worn out. But April is coming and I’m afraid to face it. Because April marks 1 year. 1 whole year. 365 days of the impossible. Yet here it comes and I can’t stop it. I can’t hide beneath the covers and ignore it. So if its been a year does that mean I’m healed? Does that mean the urge to kiss her goodnight will stop? Will I no longer search over my shoulder when I drop a piece of food? This time last year I was afraid healing meant forgetting. That I’d no longer remember running my fingers through her fur. Or the feel of her stare as I read one more chapter. Or the why her wet nose tickled my ear when she woke me up too early in the morning. Or the smile on my face when she tried again 10 minutes later. The thing is all those memories are engraved into my mind. And I don’t think I could ever really forget them, not completely. And if this is true whats so scary about April? I used to think the memories would hurt. I thought they’d be to painful to touch. But they bring nothing but warmth and smiles. Its the absence that hurts. The moments when your brain hasn’t quite caught up to your heart and you forget, she’s not there. In those moments I wonder if I could do it all again, love another dog. Have it light up my world knowing even the brightest of candles burn out. The answer is always yes, a million time yes. Because I know now that even in the darkness you still know the warmth of that light. Maybe that is how I’ll make April less scary. I’ll go for a walk, frighten some birds, and find reasons to “wag". I’ll spend the days recalling what nearly 15 years have taught me. #tothemoonandbeyond #sorryforthewordvomit
