Guess I’m doing this at some point in the near future. :) @crazy4dragons
Where to Find Me
I’m technically not completely jumping ship- but I’ve already stayed off in general for months pre-HTTYD 3 because of Spoilers. Me staring at pictures from the trailer: Yup, more art to do...oh and writing, I SHOULD try to finish those before the movie premieres anywhere..
send me a number and a character and i’ll draw it! (feel free to reblog)
Draw a mermaid, but based off of a specific type of fish. Or, make it as inhuman as possible.
Natural Black Hair Tutorial! Usually Black hair is excluded in the hair tutorials which I have seen so I have gone through it in depth because it’s really not enough to tell someone simply, “Black hair is really curly, draw it really curly.”
The next part of Black Hair In Depth will feature styles and ideas for designing characters and I will release it around February. If you would like to see certain styles, please shoot me a message!
YES! BOOSTINGGGG FOR MY FOLKS WHO WANNA/NEED TO KNOW HOW
Hey. I’m gonna break down how to draw a Black/African/Dark Skinned person’s lips.
Hello! In celebration of a new year, I’m gonna show all of you a tip how to draw lips for Black/African/Dark Skinned people.
If you’re drawing a black/dark skinned person, the top lip is a slight step above or below their actual skin tone while the bottom lip can range from a faded pink to brown.
Black/African men’s and women’s lip lean towards “nude/palm of the hand” makeup color. Some cases it’s pink but everyone’s lip color varies from pink to brown. In my experience of going outside my house, the darker the person, the pinker the bottom lip is while the lighter brown skin lips will be closer to their actual skin tone.
Another note is that the pink /brown tone on the bottom of the lip is near the slit of the mouth, not the complete lip like lipstick makeup. Try adding different tones to a lip and blending both top and bottom lips together because everyone’s different! A very good detail to remember.
TL;DR: USE A REFERENCE. GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH DOESN’T BITE! Thank you for your time! Go out and draw them awesome dark skinned characters and people!
Alrighty then friends, lets talk about art styles!
What exactly is an art style, anyway? Well, it’s a combination of the formal elements of art that is unique to you. To put it even simpler: it’s all down to your tastes.
The formal elements are: Line: what line quality do you use? Are they bold, clean lines? Soft, thin lines? Do you use any at all? Head to my inking tag to read up on line quality.
Colour: what sort of colour palettes do you use? Are they all warm colours? Pastel? Analogous? Colour theory is a whole subject of its own, understanding it is a key part to making your art your own!
Shape: Shape design is really important to distinctive art styles i think! the shapes you use will define how everything looks.
Shape design is a little trick to explain though. Certain shapes are pleasing to the eye, i find a large part of it is due to contrast.
a great example of this is straights vs curves, but you can also create contrast by using different basic shapes. I cover a this a little towards the end of this post.
Another part of contrast is making things unbalanced. straights vs curves & simple vs detailed creates contrast due to things not being equal, there’s a difference between the two sides.
Big vs small is another way to create contrast!
And lastly, having a clear silhouette is a really important part of shape design.
Tone: do you like to use a lot of contrasting values in your work? Or do you prefer a softer, dreamy kind of value range?
Tone ties in heavily with understanding light, and is closely linked with Colour!
Texture: do you use texture in your work? Do you use thick brush strokes? Do you prefer things to be smooth and clean?
Form: form is about how three-dimensional your work looks - do you have a lot of depth in your work? Or is it flat and graphic, like hieroglyphics?
Realistic form in your art is down to understanding perspective and anatomy. This isn’t the same as Tone - you can use Tone to enhance the Form in your art, but you can still convey a 3D form with lines alone!
Anyway. Let’s look at some examples shall we?
What makes up Steven Universe’s style?
One thing that sticks out to me is the Colour - the palette is very warm and often contains a lot of pinks and warm blues.
If you look at the characters, the Lines are very bold and clean, and while there is not a lot of Tone there is a lot of care put into the Form.
There is not a lot of Texture in the characters, the colours are all very clean and flat and different materials are not coloured any differently.
In the backgrounds though things change! There is a lot more colour variance, the brushes used are textured and the lines don’t quite meet the colours giving it a rough sort of look. The backgrounds often have a dream-like quality I feel
The shape design in steven universe is very strongly based on one particular shape per character - steven is made of hearts, garnet is made of squares, pearl is made of triangles, amethyst is made of ovals, etc.
The backgrounds are also very graphic, with big blocks of colour used to represent clouds and the like.
Now lets take a look at Splatoon’s concept art
The first thing to note is that there are no Lines - solid blocks of colour are used instead, the contrast between the Colours is what separates the different Forms.
Unlike Steven Universe, Splatoon is full of Texture - heavy grungy brush strokes are used, and several colours are used to make up one surface instead of solid flat colours.
Speaking of colours, that’s a really key part to Splatoon’s art direction!
The colour usage is largely neutral colours - greys, browns, dull greens, dark yellows - with select areas of extremely bright vibrant colour. The neutral tones are used to provide a lot of contrast, and it’s like. my jam hot damn thats the aesthetic
On a complete flipside though, how about we take a look at A Link Between Worlds?
The art style of the paintings in the games is extremely distinctive - bold Lines, heavily textured brush strokes, patchy blocks of colour, and very flat forms. Also very distinctive is the use of white lines!
It’s like if you took the linework from Steven Universe and combined it with Splatoon’s textured colours, but removed the 3D form. See how combining the different elements makes a new style?
Now then, how do you develop a style? It’s all well and good looking at styles, but how do you do that yourself?
Well! You do what you like! I suggest making a moodboard of your favourite artists so you can figure out what it is about their art that you like. Is it their use of colour? Their lines? The shapes?
I personally have a folder on my computer called ‘aesthetic’ which I have filled with art that really inspires me, I look through it when I’m feeling directionless!
Once you identify what it is you like about other people’s art, you can strive to incorporate it into your own work. That’s the secret to making art you love!
Your art style will develop naturally as you study the fundamentals of art, it’s your interpretation of all the elements of art that makes up your style.

For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.
Examples (all done by me):
Here’s an example for how you can use it
Great find, thanks!
OMG HEAVEN!!
Bless you!!!!
This.
and i thought only bob ross knew what was up
this single post is more useful to me then four years of art school
We did it in color study class on my college and it’s incredible the difference between using red/blue/yellow than cyan/magenta/yellow. The purple was colored like shit, so as the greens. Than we tried the actuall primary colors and it FELT SO GOOD!
I JUST TESTED IT IN MY ART PROGRAM AND HOLY SHIT
IT WORKED REALLY WELL
On the left we have dissapoinment; on the right, love.
Then why do they teach us that RBY are primary colours in Pre-KG????
To mess with our heads….
Or because they think that cyan and magenta are too difficult for kids to learn? Lame either way
Reshare to save lives
Okay, no. No no no no no no no no NO.
Listen up you fucks because I’m not wasting thousands of dollars on an art degree to watch y’all fuck up basic color theory.
Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors
If you’re using p i g m e n t.
Do you hear me? When you’re using traditional media, fucking actual goddamn paint, Bob Ross style, your primary colors are!
When you use paint, your primary colors are red yellow and blue and don’t forget it.
NOW THAT CHANGES COMPLETELY WHEN YOU GO FUCKING DIGITAL.
THE DIGITAL PRIMARY COLORS ARE RED BLUE AND GREEN IF AND ONLY IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO STAY DIGITAL, ON THE SCREEN, AND NEVER LEAVE THE SCREEN, AND OF COURSE IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO BE PRINTED. ON A PRINTER. WITH INK. THEN. AND O N L Y T H E N.
ARE YOUR PRIMARY COLORS.
CYAN.
MAGENTA.
AND YELLOW.
So say it with me folks!
Red yellow and blue, are the primary colors for traditional pigment that’s mostly used in paints and shit. You use red yellow and blue when you’re painting traditionally, Bob Ross style.
Red blue and green is light, which is what you’re painting with when you pick up your tablet and go digital.
CMYK is ink, and ink only. You could use cyan, magenta, and yellow as your primary colors in paint if you wanted to be a complete dick, but they’re not your primary colors unless your work is going to be printed using. i n k. The only time they could be considered the primary colors in a traditional medium is if you’re using ink.
Good day.
Also thatswhiskytoyou’s color mixing is bullshit because THIS:
Is my icon. I painted this using RED. GREEN. AND BLUE. AS MY PRIMARY COLORS and they turned out fine. Of course, I used the finger smudge tool first and then the color mixing tool and then the blur tool, but hey what do I know.
Clearly using the blur tool only doesn’t cut it.
“Oh but Leo!” You say. “You used cyan and magenta in that color wheel!”
Well bitch guess what.
this is the digital color wheel. I’d say I mimicked that pretty well, don’t you think?
Oh and one other thing, notice how Blue and Yellow are directly opposite each other on this color wheel? That’s because we’re dealing with light, and with light, yellow and blue are complimentary colors.
Which is why when you mix them, it looks like this:
Which is a pretty neutral gray tone: They cancel each other out on the rgb color wheel when you mix them together.
BUT WITH PIGMENT THE PLACEMENT IS DIFFERENT
If you’ll notice, yellow and violet are now opposite each other, meaning they’re complimentary colors and if you mix them, they’ll make a neutral gray.
But if you mix yellow and blue, same colors as before, YOU GET THIS:
Now keep in mind that the person in the video uses a darker blue, so they get a darker green, but the point is that it doesn’t make that neutral gray.
Now what happens when we mix yellow and violet paint?
Ah yes, you get a bunch of muted colors the more evenly you mix them.
What happens when you mix yellow light and purple light?
I see, I see.
OH AND ONE MORE THING.
They didn’t teach you about red blue green and cmyk in pre-k because when most of us were in pre-k digital art was still in its early stages and what fucking seven year old knows how to use a printer.
GUESS WHO’S NOT FUCKING DONE YET:
The reason the primary colors for light are so dramatically different from the primary colors for paint and ink is because your eye only receives combinations of red light, blue light, and green light. Our eyes do not have a sensor (cone cell) for yellow light. So when we paint with light, red green and blue are our primary colors. Because of our eyes.
Furthermore, paint primary colors are colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors together. For paint, they are red yellow and blue, because you cannot mix orange and green to get yellow. Mixing orange and purple paint does not make red. And mixing green and purple paint does not make blue.
Mixing blue and green paints will make cyan. Mixing red and blue paints will make magenta.
That’s why cyan and magenta aren’t primary paint colors.
However, you can’t mix yellow and blue ink and get cyan. You can’t mix red and blue ink to get magenta.
And that’s why cyan and magenta are the primary ink colors.
Brighter and stronger paints are created through tints and shades, through a thorough understanding of color theory and a few quality paint recipes. Not by bullshit posts on tumblr designed to mislead you.
Okay, fanfic readers, I’m gonna level with you: Why is it so hard to reblog, comment, or message your content creators?
I’m not calling anyone out or anything, I seriously do want to know. It’s a question that’s been bothering me for ages – even before I started this blog! – and now, I just can’t keep it in anymore.
Why is it so much easier to read something that someone has worked hours (or even months) on and just “like” it? And I’ve thought through reasons like, “I don’t know what to say!” or “I don’t wanna bother them!” or “I don’t want fanfic on my blog due to stigma” and those just don’t make any sense. Because 1) you can literally say anything within reason (so long as you aren’t condescending or disrespectful about it); 2) there are nigh-on infinite posts wherein writers insist to readers that nobody is bothering them by being nice because when is a kind word with no malicious intent a bother?; 3) you may not have to reblog, but you could at least message them via chat or on anon.
Clearly, there’s more to it but I just? Don’t? Get it?? There’s plenty of time to read a 10-page long fic but not enough to do more than “like” is what I’ve been noticing not just to me, but to plenty of other extremely talented and patient people. The issue that arises here is that on one hand, people will say, “Just be lucky you have notes” but that’s not fair. That’s practically guilt-tripping. It’s like saying, “Be lucky anyone even so much as glanced in your direction.” You’re telling somebody that they don’t need to be validated for something they felt enough passion to write for, that they should just be lucky anyone saw them at all. A like is a digital equivalent to glancing at somebody at the free samples section, only the free samples are things they’ve worked very hard on and not something manufactured elsewhere by a big company. It’s one – maybe two or even three people – putting their mind, body, eyes, and soul into something and hoping you’ll love it enough to emote.
But sometimes, a little red heart is just a little red heart. How ironic.
What’s wrong with wanting validation? Why do so many people on a site thriving with artistic minds and spirits still seemingly carrying on the social notion that artsy people just “do things for the fun of it” and don’t desire validation or interaction? That they just do things for the whimsy of it all? Maybe some do, but most I know of don’t.
Don’t get me wrong, we love that people so much as give us the time of day. But after a while, it gets really…disheartening. Because it feels like it’s only take with no give. Even unique tags in every reblog are a blessing. I remember some of the names of the blogs who’ve reblogged some of my oldest pieces because they added nice tags expressing their thoughts or feelings. And these are stories from January.
And if that’s what I’m doing as a C-level writer, how are A-levels undergoing the same situation as me doing?
So for that, I ask you and genuinely do hope you answer:
Why is it so easy to “like” something than it is to do other things to let your content creator know you liked what they did?
