Lesson Thirty-One: Telling Time
Hours
When telling time, you would use NATIVE numbers for the hour. Letās review native numbers 1-12.
ķė = One
ė = Two
ģ = Three
ė· = Four
ė¤ģÆ = Five
ģ¬ģÆ = Six
ģ¼ź³± = Seven
ģ¬ė = Eight
ģķ = Nine
ģ“ = Ten
ģ“ķė = Eleven
ģ“ė = Twelve
You can add the word āģā to express āhour.ā A few numbers are shortened for the ease of pronunciation.
ķė + ģ -> ķ ģ / 1ģ = 1 oāclock
ė + ģ -> ė ģ / 2ģ = 2 oāclock
ģ + ģ -> ģø ģ / 3ģ = 3 oāclock
ė· + ģ -> ė¤ ģ / 4ģ = 4 oāclock
ė¤ģÆ ģ / 5ģ = 5 oāclock
ģ¬ģÆ ģ / 6ģ = 6 oāclock
ģ¼ź³± ģ / 7ģ = 7 oāclock
ģ¬ė ģ / 8ģ = 8 oāclock
ģķ ģ / 9ģ = 9 oāclock
ģ“ ģ / 10ģ = 10 oāclock
ģ“ķė + ģ -> ģ“ķ ģ / 11ģ = 11 oāclock
ģ“ė + ģ -> ģ“ė ģ / 12ģ = 12 oāclock
Minutes
While youād use Native Korean numbers for hours, youād use SINO Korean numbers for minutes. Letās review Sino Korean numbers 1-10.
ģ¼ = One
ģ“ = Two
ģ¼ = Three
ģ¬ = Four
ģ¤ = Five
ģ” = Six
ģ¹ = Seven
ķ = Eight
구 = Nine
ģ = Ten
Similar to using āģā to express āhourā, you can use āė¶ā to express āminute.ā
ģ¼ ė¶ / 1ė¶ = One Minute
ģ¤ ė¶ / 5ė¶ = Five Minutes
ģ ė¶ / 10ė¶ = Ten Minutes
ģ“ģ¬ģ“ ė¶ / 22ė¶ = Twenty-Two Minutes
ģ¼ģ ė¶ / 30ė¶ = Thirty Minutes
ģ¤ģģ¹ ģ¤ / 57ė¶ = Fifty-Seven Minutes
Hour + Minutes
Now letās combine the two!
ė¤ģÆ ģ ģ¬ģ ė¶ / 5ģ 40ė¶ = 5:40
ģ“ķ ģ ģ“ģģ“ ė¶ / 11ģ 22ė¶ = 11:22
ģ¼ź³± ģ ķ ė¶ / 7ģ 8ė¶ = 7:08
ģ“ė ģ ģ¤ģģ¤ ė¶ / 12ģ 55ė¶ = 12:55
ė ģ ģ¼ģ ė¶ / *ė ģ ė° / 2ģ 30ė¶ = 2:30
*To express half an hour you could also say ė ģ ė°(Half).
AM and PM
Another important aspect of telling time is expressing AM and PM if you are using the 12-hour clock.
AM / Forenoon = ģ¤ģ
PM / Afternoon = ģ¤ķ
You would add ģ¤ģ or ģ¤ķ BEFORE the time.
ģ¤ģ ģ¤ ģ ė° / ģ¤ģ 5ģ ė° = 5:30 am
ģ¤ķ ģ¬ė ģ ģģ¤ ė¶ / ģ¤ķ 8ģ 15ė¶ = 8:15 pm
If you want to get more specific, here are a few other options:
Dawn (1-6 am) = ģė²½
Morning (7-11 am) = ģ침
Evening (6-11 pm) = ģ ė / ė°¤
