Sometimes I really want to take everyone under the age of 24 (as of 2026) by the shoulders and say:

"I'm really sorry that lockdown and the ongoing pandemic interrupted pivotal educational and social/emotional development moments for you. You have an uphill battle towards adjusting to a lot of community based efforts because you experienced a mass trauma during an incredibly important time in your life where you should have physically been around your peers learning to engage in shared community. There is no "but" here, I'm genuinely really sorry. Something many of us consider key points in our interpersonal growth as youths was taken from you, not without reason but without care for its impact on you. I hope you know we are eternally allies in our struggles and if that is something you struggle to know I hope you can learn it someday."

Because so many of the angriest, most disenfranchised people I see on this website are under 24 and I often try to put younger people's behavior in the context of where they might have been 2020. I've seen the impact on my siblings and their peers+friends first hand, all ages 18-24. We've talked about how its impacted them, the isolation, the attachment to the internet, the anxieties and phobias and fears it developed in them due to the pandemic, the political unrest, and the responses to both that we've seen since. I know they're not the only ones and I know how much being marginalized also influences that impact too.

It's terrifying. I know it must be terrifying for a lot of the young people on Tumblr too. I hope one day we're able to bridge all of those complex feelings into something collective and positive so we can do our best to prevent similar traumas from happening to future generations.

I think about this in relation to all the generational struggles we're facing. As a millennial who felt, viscerally, the promise of a better future than my parents and grandparents had slide from my fingertips, I look at the world we've jointly inherited and try not to despair.

There's been some conversation in online spaces I've seen lately, where Gen Z are holding millennials as responsible and culpable for the world as it is. And I won't say we're generationally innocent, but I'd hope to remind them we grew up in a world with the proof that life was supposed to get better generationally, and then had all of that ripped away from us while being entrapped in the systems responsible.

Gen Z has the "benefit" of seeing how bad things are whereas many of us Millennials have been the lobsters in the pot not able to tell the water is being heated up until its too late because Boomers and Gen X handed us a ladder to get in and promised it was going up, not down.

Gen Z have had it bad from the jump, which I think gives them a lot more clarity about reality. And I need more of my older generational counterparts to realize this and have care for Gen Z and what they've been denied & subjected to. And then I need for all of us to really grasp that the only way out is together.

The only way for us to protect Gen Alpha from our traumas is to actually build a better world for them together. And anyone who won't get on board needs to be stripped of their power. I don't know how to do that, but I know it's going to take all of us working together to do so - without any generational fighting or jealousy. The hope is that those who follow us get it better than we had it - not that we get to the top and then hoard the goodness so no one else can have it - as too many Boomers (particularly) and older generations (and also many Gen X) have done.

Any of those older generations can be a part of the fight alongside us. But at bare minimum, Millennials and younger we've got to stand with one another.

Reasons Why Fans of Color Leave/Don’t Interact with Fandom

Casual racism that is brushed off as “an innocent mistake” or “they didn’t mean it” and then everyone pretending like it didn’t happen and moving on with their day (repeat)

Speaking over fans of color about issues that pertain to them specifically

When fans of color speak out about something that makes them uncomfortable or why that don’t interact with it (usually because of the racial/ethnic bias) they are accused of being anti’s or pro-censorship

Characters of color being used as scapegoats/bashed/plot devices 

Characters of color never getting happy endings/real development

Backlash against characters of color if they do anything other than be a white character’s side kick/best friend

Actors of characters of color being harassed for something their character did or didn’t do

White characters/actors getting all the attention/credit despite the fact that they are a side character to a POC or on the same level as the POC

Fanfic authors patting themselves on the back for writing a “realistic” character of color and it’s just a bunch of stereotypes

Being told that they should be happy they were even included when they call out the above people

White fans crying about persecution/exclusion because their fav character/trope/kink/ship isn’t loved by all 

Fan artists re-imaging characters of color as white/lightening skin tone

Everyone rushing to a white fans defense after a well deserved call out while the fan of color receives hate

Never having a safe fandom space and always having to be on guard with new people/fandoms/chats etc because they’ve been burned before

Writing taught me that the most interesting thing about a person is never what happened to them. it's what they decided it meant. two people can go through the exact same thing and build completely different selves out of it. the event is just the event. the story they tell about it is who they become. I think about this every time i catch myself retelling something from my own life and notice i've quietly changed what it meant. we are all editing ourselves constantly.

I had a high school science teacher who would say "if you admit you're wrong and change your mind..." and the whole class would respond back "... you aren't wrong anymore!"

And when a kid would assert something incorrect In class, he wouldn't tell them they were wrong, he would help lead them to the right answer and then when they admitted/ accepted the new information, he'd say "now we're both right! Nice work!"

For a bunch of gifted kids whose identity and reputation often was staked on knowing more than most people, it was a great safety valve. No shame in making a mistake, because if you accept it you have learned! Now you are smarter! It always made me feel better.

Look, it's simple. If a person has to actively work to make money, they're not "the rich" and they're not the problem. A surgeon making $200k a year still stops making money if they stop showing up to do surgery, because they're still selling their labor. The radical discrepancies in how we value different skills are certainly a problem, but the guy who makes money when he doesn't even get out of bed is the one making money on the value of other people's labor.

If you're still not quite clear on what the article is saying, this woman had a rapidly growing malignant tumor until her doctor poked it with one needle to take a sample.

Her immune cells responded to that tiny little needle wound as they normally would, and only then detected something wrong with the surrounding cells, attacking the cancer they now associated with that trivial damage.

It doesn't reliably work that way all the time or we would have noticed this happening a lot more often, but this would also seem to imply that, across the entire history of the practice, there's probably an above-zero number of people who actually beat cancer through acupuncture.
