So last year we had this intern teacher helping the normal teacher for microbiology. The intern was a guy around 22 I think. We got along quite well and could always crack some good jokes. So after class me my teacher and the intern are the last ones left in the lab and I am sanitizing my hands and having a casual conversation with the intern and the teacher. Now at some point the intern throws a ball of paper at me and I'm laughing and its all good so I throw it back. Now this guy looks a bit offended and my teacher goes "you can't do that." And I'm still in the joking mood so didn't think she was serious so I go "why not he threw it at me hahaha" and she goes ""this isn't funny he still is your teacher show some respect and apologize" So I'm all confused so I ask why. And she just goes "because I say so" so I'm just like "well ok sorry I guess?" And I left the room. Now I don't get why it was okay to throw something at his student but I couldn't throw it back? If It was disrespectful of me to throw a ball of paper back at him then wasn't it disrespectful of him in the first place?? I really don't understand adults and their way of "respect". I feel like to most adults respect is ~I am older thus better and can treat you however I want and I expect nothing but respect back from you~ and that my dear adults is not how it works. Respect is always given unless proven that you don't deserve it. Second story: One time I was cycling home from school and I had to stop at a traffic light and push the button. There is quite a pile up be its taking long and this older man starts to shout things at me like "have you even pushed the button you moron" and "damn kid is so stupid" so I go to defend myself and say "yes I have pushed the damn button I'm not an idiot" And everyone is like "omg have respect for the elders!1!1!1" And I'm just there super confused like "???? Did y'all not hear him yell at me???" And this is again a example of how respect is seen. We have always been taught to respect the people older than us just because they have lived longer but the people who are older often treat younger people with such disrespect and still expect nothing but respect. It's crazy to me.
