Remember when a UK bookstore offered visitors the opportunity to vandalize Harry Potter pages for 25 pence? They raised over £4,000 for transgender healthcare! And now they need your support. Emily, co-owner of The Bookish Type, is fundraising for her own gender-affirming surgery that's covered in every Western European country aside from the UK and Ireland. Let's help her like she helped dozens of other trans people access care in an increasingly hostile nation. Support her on GoFundMe here.
it makes you think how many health conditions which allegedly "only emerge during adulthood" are actually conditions which parents deny medical attention to their kids for
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Word already had a word count?! That WORKED?
You made a computer that can't COUNT?!
I'm genuinely so glad that people are learning how MUCH Amir is a sassy smart mouth and not just a puppy boy that people kinda turned him into. He's SO quick with it and he is MEANNNN when he wants to be! He's funny! He's smart and witty!
The fact you can dismiss him by asking, "How many times can you run in and out here before the floor sets on fire?" And his reply is. "Let's find out!" Oh Amir Beckett, I've missed you so much...
Movement nudge, hand mobility! 🙌
X
1) do this even if you're under 40. seriously. I definitely should have been doing something like this for years and I only turned 40 a month and a half ago
2) if you're like me just now trying this going "oh god i've only done 15 and i think my hands are cramping" start lower than 30 and increase by 5 once whatever number you're doing no longer makes your hand cramp up. I can manage about 15 per exercise at the moment.
If you're hypermobile, be especially gentle.
Happy International Vulture Awareness Day!
It’s about time I got the chance to draw my favorite animal for this account! This is the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), a scavenger of scavengers, the only known vertebrate whose diet consists of 70–90% bone! In order to digest bone, the Bearded Vulture’s stomach acid has a pH concentration of 1, about as acidic as battery acid! The Bearded Vulture can swallow bones up to the size of a lamb’s femur whole, or, it will break them into smaller, more manageable pieces. It does this by flying them to a height of 50–150 m (160–490 ft) above rocks and then dropping them so that they fall at a precise angle. They may need to repeat the drop multiple times if the bone does not break sufficiently. This learned skill requires extensive practice, and can take up to 7 years for the bird to master. They can fly with bones up to 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter and weighing over 4 kg (8.8 lb), nearly equal to their own weight!
Bearded Vultures are also one of the few animals known to use cosmetics. While their head, chest, and leg feathers are naturally a cream color, they will bathe in iron-rich dust or mud to dye them red, orange, rust, or pink! They will also transfer this coloration to their eggs.
The Bearded Vulture has been declining severely in Europe over the past several decades, and has also seen declines in Asia and Africa. Threats include loss of habitat, collisions with powerlines, poisoning (intentional and unintentional), and trophy hunting.
Bearded Vultures are one of the more charismatic species of vulture, but on this Vulture Awareness Day let us remember how important all vultures are. As highly effective scavengers with strong stomachs, vultures help clean the earth and stop the spread of diseases such as rabies and anthrax. They return nutrients that other organisms would miss into the cycle of life, and they do not need to hunt and kill to eat. This is one of the most imperiled group of birds, and without them, ecosystems around the world would collapse.

Solid life advice from Sue the T. Rex.
took a nap and in my dreams i was angrily explaining everything wrong with the lilo and stitch live-action. do you know how bad you have to fuck up for my subconscious to be able to beat-for-beat recount what's wrong with your fucking film
i think in my dream i said something like. there is something so sinister about telling an orphaned child, a neurodivergent child (or even just a 'weird' child), or a bullied child that "you ARE a burden on your family and they would be better off abandoning you," let alone saying that to all of these at the same time, but adding ONTO that that you've decided to communicate this through the medium of a movie that has been celebrated for decades as a representation of family, both biological and found,
and something even MORE sinister in telling this in a story that stars an indigenous family. the original movie is so specifically allegorical for colonization and how the US would steal hawai'ian children away from their families and hawai'ians as a whole away from their culture.
literally they are looking indigenous children IN THE EYES and telling them, "you are a burden on your family, they would be better off abandoning you, so let the government take care of you (they know best) while your family leaves your ancestral homeland specifically to attend a boarding school" and this movie made a billion dollars because some people have no backbone and couldnt resist watching a movie with a bad cgi stitch farting onscreen
So like. What was going through Cobra Bubbles' head the first time he encountered Stitch?
He's trying to conduct a home visit. It's not going well. The last visit didn't go well. It's becoming more and more clear that he's probably going to have to separate this little girl from her only living relative, which he doesn't want to do. Nani's not helping her own case, and he's coming down pretty hard on her. And then suddenly this bizarre little blue creature pops up and flings a heavy book directly at his face. The sisters insist it's a dog, but it doesn't look, sound, or behave like any dog.
The thing is, Agent Bubbles knows about aliens. He knows for a fact that intelligent extraterrestrial life exists and that it knows about Earth. And yet he doesn't challenge the idea that Stitch is a dog or try to either immediately remove Lilo or demand that Stitch be sent away. He does specifically tell Lilo that the next time he sees Stitch he expects Stitch to be "a model citizen." Not under control or well trained, a model citizen.
Is he hoping that Stitch is a solution here? That this alien creature that, arguably, attacked him in defense of the Pelekai sisters, might represent a useful element of their support system if better socialized?
This was hiding in the tags:
#He sees a loving sister way too in over her head trying to care for her family without much-needed support and resources#He also sees a young woman desperately trying to preserve what little she's been left with after fate took so much from her#The writing is on the wall during the first visit that Nani will not be able to show she can properly provide and care for Lilo#Not without a miraculous change to their circumstances#Well hey lo and behold there's an alien now living under their roof that's identifiably intelligent and maybe even protective#To him seeing Stitch is potentially the radical change needed to keep these sisters together#And of course he's ex-CIA so he's gotta keep an eye on Stitch anyway until he knows if he's safe to leave alone#You can see how demoralizing it is for him as he sees and realizes Stitch is chaos-incarnate#And realizing that such a variable can only make Nani and Lilo's situation worse#David isn't wrong that Nani and Lilo had a chance - if a small one - until Stitch showed up#And then everything catches on fire literally#He's frustrated that he can't keep these sisters together and scared for Lilo's safety#He looks so happy - in his own stoic way - to see Stitch pull a 180 and not only fight tooth and nail to save Lilo#But also behave politely and with genuine affection for Lilo#Suddenly that miraculous change has manifested#And not only that but there's two more aliens that can stick around and help out#And he's in the perfect position to weave everything together so that Nani has support to keep Lilo#He gets a happy ending too because he doesn't have to rip this loving family apart
you know those old ‘hentai free’ banners? that’s this blog but with harry potter
reasons your first lieutenant might be hovering / inconspicuously seeking proximity:
someone did something they shouldn't have
someone did someone they shouldn't have
separation anxiety
needs attention
you said "stay close" 16 hours ago, you just forgot
If none of these can suffiently explain why your first lieutenant appears particularly glued to you, seek the nearest mirror and check:
have I slept in the last 24 hours?
have I eaten in the last 8 hours?
have I fought a battle in the last 8 hours and do I still look like it? In fact, are all my limbs where they ought to be?
If the answer to any of these is "no", address these issues first. Your first lieutenant's behavior may change almost immediately!
How do you write healthy parent-child relationships?
this might be more response than you want, but interesting (and kinda depressing when you think about it) fact: there’ve been a bunch of research studies where parents have been asked what they think makes a healthy parent-child relationship, and they tend to like…not answer the actual question because they think they’re being asked what good parenting is, which is not the same. so they talk about things like helping kids with homework and making sure they eat well. children, on the other hand, usually respond to the same question with stuff that’s literally just the definition of healthy relationships generally. affection, honesty, respect, spending time together, sharing interests. and the real kicker is, objectively, we know that’s the kind of stuff that actually has a much better impact not only on whether or not the relationship is strong and positive but also the kid’s overall happiness and psychological health.
so, if you want to write a character who’s really intent on being a Good Parent you’d have them putting massive effort into making their kid Grow Up Right, worrying about shit like if they have The Right Friends and they’re spending Enough Time Outside. but if you want to write a good relationship, just make parent and kid laugh together and respect boundaries and be emotionally supportive, like you would when writing a solid pair of friends or romantic couple.
No that was actually really helpful and I’m glad you took the time to give a serious response
obsessed with star trek repeatedly writing themselves into a corner by creating alien races that are supposed to be The Bad Guys when that explicitly conflicts with their previously established notion that no group of people is inherently good or evil.
first it was the klingons—they’re originally supposed to be this cruel, bloodthirsty, war-obsessed people—and then tng comes along and it’s like wait no maybe war and violence is a part of their culture and actually ties back to ancient traditions and philosophies so we have to be woke about it.
hey these are the ferengi and they’re supposed to represent everything we hate about capitalist society; they’re greedy, scheming, profit-obsessed, and they look like ugly little trolls to emphasize how much we fucking HATE capitalism. oh wait fuck here comes deep space nine and we have to recognize that they’re PEOPLE. okok what if the pursuit of profit is actually part of their culture and ties back to ancient traditions and philosophies. so we have to be woke about it.
this is the borg, they’re a hivemind race of cyborgs who have no sense of individuality and their only motivation is assimilating people into their society. they want to assimilate humanity and we are completely defenseless against them because their technology is eons ahead of our own and they’re incapable of being reasoned with. oh sweet we have a borg prisoner this is the perfect opportunity to commit genocide against them. fuck actually we can’t commit genocide we’re woke and communists and in space.
hey these are the cardassians, they’re part of a cruel and vicious empire which is supposed to be a representation of fascism and authoritarian regimes, they’re a cold, bloodthirsty people with no sense of empathy or compassion, their society literally references 1984 on multiple occasions, and they’re known for the insanely cruel and inhumane methods of torture they use against their prisoners of war. we hate the cardassians…….. except, here’s a cardassian kid who grew up on bajor, and……. fuck. he’s a person. now we actually have to consider his humanity. and being racist is actually……. bad.
this is the jem’hadar, they’re genetically engineered soldiers who have no sense of individuality and only live to defend the state. they’re all born addicted to a synthetic drug that’s manufactured by the state and administered by their masters—this is how they’re kept subservient. they’re ruthless and powerful and they’re incapable of being reasoned with because their only motivation is violence and killing. so we should kill them all, right? FUCK….. what if they’re actually people. goddamnit. now we have to consider their humanity.
hey these are the romulans. hey these are the founders. the list goes on. i just find it really interesting
Mission accomplished!
