Tour Guide: Hello and welcome to Omelas!

Tourist: Is Omelas really the greatest city in the world?

Tour Guide: Well, I certainly like to think so. We have good free public transport, housing, food, clothing, health care and education. We are a city of wonderful architecture, art, music, science and culture but the truth is that Omelas can be a blueprint for any city. Hopefully, one day, everywhere will be like Omelas.

Tourist: Oh, I get it. Omelas seems nice but really, you’re all bloodthirsty warmongeries and you want to conqueror the world. Got it.

Tour Guide: What? No! I just meant that hopefully one day everyone can have all their basic needs met and have enough free time and the opportunity to follow their passions.

Tourist: Everyone? Sure, that’s a nice dream but it’s a little unrealistic, don’t you think? Does that ‘everyone’ include the slaves I’m sure you use to make Omelas look so nice? What about the working class? Are you going to give them all a living wage?

Tour Guide: Look, I think you’ve got the wrong idea about Omelas. We don’t have any slaves. The teachers, builders, street cleaners and everyone else who lives here all enjoy their jobs. They have all their needs met and more than enough free time to follow any passions they have. If they don’t like their job, they can quit whenever they want and nothing bad will happen to them. Omelas is a good place for anyone to live.

Tourist: You say that but I don’t believe you. You know what? I bet this place has some dark secret! I’m going to find it, even if I have to rip this place apart!

Tour Guide: -sigh- Okay, look. Would you believe that Omelas is as perfect as I say BUT one child has to suffer for it all to work? If you like, I can show you some very real and unedited footage of a child suffering so that everyone else in Omelas can be happy.

Tourist: I knew it! I knew there had to be a catch! That’s barbaric! How can you live with yourself!? How can you be happy when you know a child is suffering? Why don’t you walk away and make a better city – without the suffering child – somewhere else?

Tour Guide: -sarcastically- Yes, I’m sure you’d be able to imagine and believe in such a wonderful place. Tell you what; why don’t you go found this wonderful city with no suffering at all?

Tourist: Wow, way to put the weight of the world’s evils on my shoulders. How am I supposed to do that?

Tour Guide: You could start by trying to make your own home town a little bit more like Omelas. How about volunteering at a soup kitchen so less people go hungry?

Tourist: No, that seems like hard work and it’s not going to end world hunger so what’s the point?

Tour Guide: So, in summary, you refuse to believe in a perfect world and you refuse to make your world better unless it’s easy and it makes a perfect world?

“back” on tumblr despite having never properly used it before, which is fun. all I know is I have a dream, an idea:

A show adaptation of The Silmarillion except it’s in the style of Arcane and they let me be on the writing team and also maybe let me voice Haleth or something (because I’m definitely cool enough that the grand “they” of the industry would let me do either of those things.)

The vibes just. Mingle so well? Obviously we’d pull back on the pacing to a more Tolkien-suited style, but considering the writing of the Silmarillion I can’t imagine that be entirely necessary? And we’d take it more in the direction of arcane Season 1 because Season 2 was fun but it wasn’t quite up to par imo. Fast but not rushed yannow?

And no loose ends or shoddy plot wrap-ups because there is already so much source material to work with it’s just a matter of figuring out how to arrange it all and which pieces need to be supplemented for adaptation.

—> but like. Everytime I hear Goodbye by Ramsey I think about Alqualondë and the burning of the Swan ships/the Helcaraxë.

The Silmarillion is simultaneously this grand story of how pride/greed/etc. shape the world and how they rip apart lives on an individual scale—it’s a story FULL of family drama, from the Valar to the house of Finwë to the common people of arda (because honestly, all of the grander courses of human history bear their root in the personal tales of everyone involved) which is EXACTLY the angle that Arcane takes in it’s storytelling, which is. So perfect. Plus I just really love the art style and I want more of it in my life.

I will say—none of that “modern audiences” tomfoolery, though. That’s industry slang for “we’re following ‘trends’ instead of making a timeless classic to be enjoyed and appreciated and perhaps even learned from for generations.”

^and they’re not even following any real trends? They’re copying marvel’s flop era. Their FLOP ERA. Be so serious.

My opinions on certain Tolkien-world adaptations is not particularly well-disguised. Do with that what you will. And don’t put sequins on a dress set in the quasi-middle-ages.

Anyways. I don’t know if anyone will see this or care but please please please I’ve had this vision in my head since arcane s2 dropped it could be so magical. I need my emotional support war criminals in art nouveau NEOOOOOOW.
