Have any of you ever heard of the hummingbird moths we get in Britain?

So, I thought I saw a hummingbird last year. It was much bigger than a bug could be, I thought, and it hovered around flowers and looked like it had feathers.

I got pretty close but it was never still enough to see clearly. Then, when I told my parents they said "oh! it was probably a moth!" and I was baffled for a long time. Like, how could a moth look like and act so much like a hummingbird?

Until I googled "hummingbirds in the UK" and this fucker comes up:

This is the kinda thing I'd see in fiction and go "oooh cool, bug hummingbird! Wish we had those on earth!" But we do. We really do have them on earth!! Isn't that nuts?!?!?

There is a population of these (Macroglossum stellatarum I'm assuming) naturalized just north of the Bay Area. Moth that looks like hummingbird has evolved several times as it happens.

Here is one (Hemaris thysbe) with clear sections in its wings!

I've gotta post a garden 2024 um... Idk the word(s?) for it, the thing involving reflection on the past and what to change for the future. Maybe tomorrow. It was a fairly average year gardening wise, some success some failure. I'm moving but the region is similar so probably not too much change.

Added home grown carrots to some curry. Lots of colors all mixed together, from the classic orange to purples and some in between. The heat was making them bitter to eat raw but they were fine being cooked.

I set up sprinklers and a water auto thing and it's been a good improvement for the garden.
