If you have a friend that wants to vent to you but doesn't want solutions but you are a solutions-oriented person, may I suggest Silly Solutions (TM)? For instance, whenever my friend complains about the people at her job being dumb, I remind her that if only one of us had studied engineering, we could create a giant hippo robot with laser eyes to destroy them. It fulfills my need to offer a solution, doesn't violate her boundary of not wanting to problem solve, AND it cheers us both up!

us public transit policy is fascinating 'cause cities are finally coming around to the benefits of local rail transit and starting to build it out, but every system they build lowkey sucks 'cause it's 100% designed around never ever ever disrupting cars in any way whatsoever and also focused almost exclusively on how to get white people from the suburbs to their office jobs downtown and back. you can have light rail but only if it goes from like 2 stops in the downtown financial district out to the far flung levittown developments in formerly redlined areas with stations in places everyone still has to drive to that, if you're lucky, might also be a bus station with very limited service. They exclusively exist to combat commuter congestion to make it so that car-obsessed suburbanites deal with less traffic 'cause the people who work in high-rises two blocks from the station are willing to take the train (but only if it's clean and fancy and there's no icky homeless people on it like there are on those gross groddy busses). rail transit could be so so so so good in the US but instead every new light rail system is mired in these same backwards ass planning issues. And if you build a tram/streetcar/trolley, by god it better only go in the nice fancy newly developed (i.e. gentrified) parts of downtown, where the new generation of post-white-flight urbanites have moved in. Light rail transit, from neighborhood to city to regional, could be such a powerful tool for economic uplift and social mobility. but it never will be if it's built like this. You didn't build light rail, you built white rail.
