folklore feels so intimate because we literally had zero time to think about it and expect something, it feels intimate because Taylor created it in a rough time, alone, in her own little secret world, it feels intimate because we all listened to it by ourselves, alone, in a rough time, just like a light shining in the chaos. folklore is and will always be so intimate and special to everyone

I love how Taylor presents Betty as so much wiser than James. In Betty James says “I’m only seventeen I don’t know anything” but in Cardigan, Betty says “but I knew you” and continued to list the things she knew, she knew he’d miss her “once the thrill expired”, and she knew he’d stand on her porch to try to get her back. She’s presented as wise and mature whereas James is young and naïve which is also reflected in the melodies. Cardigan is deeper, mellow and expresses heartbreak, whereas Betty is lighter and unaware, with more superficial lyrics, such as observations about events at school.

honestly this is when it pays to be a taylor stan well-versed in her entire discography, including and especially her early work and unreleased songs. because the general public knows her for her confessional, straightforward songwriting. they’re used to taking her lyrics at face value. hence the many MANY texts i’ve received in the last hour asking me if taylor “broke up with her boyfriend” or if she’s ok. 

but if you listen to early unreleased songs and selections of her work throughout the years, she’s proven she’s great at putting fictional storylines or other people’s stories to song. the emotions are real – they’re hers. but the details of the events are not ripped from the pages of her diary this time. 

letting go of this insistence that every detail of every song is a clue to her personal life really frees us up to analyze these songs and find the universal humanity in them instead of just celebrity gossip fodder.
