For anyone interested in getting into emulation, it can feel intimidating to look at the sheer wall of information and not know what's happening, so here's a very quick primer: Emulators are programs that are designed to replicate what the hardware does. The more accurate the emulation, the more difficult it is for your computer to run it. They also have modifications they can do to do things like increase the resolution (make the output larger), improve the sound, or apply filters to change how the games look. The more complex the original hardware, the more things emulators struggle to emulate accurately even with very strong computers.
Most cartridge games are saved as ROM files, which are exact copies of everything on the chip inside the physical cartridge. Most ROMs are "No-Intro," named after a community dedicated to cataloging ROM files with no modifications or changes.
Distribution of ROM files is legally murky, though it is not illegal to dump or store the ROM or ISO files from your own collection. Some basic search engines can point you in directions, but knowing good from bad is a bit of an uphill climb. Places that advertise being No-Intro sets are usually a good place to start.
