It had been her experience that the liar was the hottest to defend his veracity, the coward his courage, the ill-bred his gentlemanliness, and the cad his honor. But not Rhett. He admitted everything and laughed and dared her to say more.
Gone With The Wind. Pg 188
nolxdy:
She didn’t say anything save for give him a look that was completely in agreement to what he stated. Scarlett could smell the brandy on his lips with how close they were. She wanted him to kiss her, if she leaned up a bit their lips would be touching. Rhett’s kisses had a intoxicating affect on her, while she’d never admit it, she had the faintest idea he knew that already. From the first kiss; making her feel like she was falling and the second if it wasn’t for his arms supporting her she’d gone weak at the knees. No one ever had kissed her like Rhett.
Even the brandy coursing through his veins held little weight when compared to the lips of the woman before him. This woman who could drive him completely mad in the best ways and more often than not in the worst ways too. Moments like these were few and far between and he wouldn't be surprised if in the next instance they'd be at each other's throats again. So he did kiss her. A gentle though crushing kiss, brutal in it's desire to keep her lips only calling out for his own. They belonged together and if he had to kiss her a hundred times to keep her believing that, he would.
nolxdy:
"Oh Rhett, once upon a time you enjoyed that look, you know." She teased. Never the less, the expression fell from her face and with it a subtle smile was replaced instead. Scarlett sighed softly and fiddled with her fingers. "Don’t tell me you’re tiring of it already now that I’m with child, you won’t dare touch me, hm?"
Oh he knew. But that look made him weak and he didn't like being weak around her. His hands fell from her shoulders to her hands and a deep laugh burst from his lips at her words. "On the contrary, my dear," He said, placing lingering kisses to her knuckles before he pulled her into his arms, lips but a breath away from hers. "If you thought I was a scalawag before, I'd hate to hear what you'll call me now. . ."
A gentleman always appeared to believe a lady even when he knew she was lying. That was Southern chivalry. A gentleman always obeyed the rules and said the correct things and made life easier for a lady. But this man seemed not to care for rules and evidently enjoyed talking about things no one ever talked about.
Gone With The Wind. Pg. 165
Another 9 reasons why this movie should never be remade.
"Fiddle dee dee." She rolled her eyes at him, moving to sit up and stand whilst on the couch, Scarlett smiled at her husband and flicked a few ringlets back behind her ear. "I shan’t do such a thing—just you wait and see." Scarlett was sure as ever that she wouldn’t give her husband the satisfaction of seeing her act as he predicted her to do so. She hated when he was right and with this delicate situation she wouldn’t give him the chance to be. She only thought of this as a chance to redeem herself before her mother’s dead eyes. Ellen O’Hara was dead and gone, but Scarlett knew from all those Sunday school lessons that her mother might be watching over her.
"Won’t my darling of a husband be a dear and help me up the stairs…"
He chuckled to himself as he watched her, still wearing that skeptical expression though if you dug deep enough you would be able to see the smugness ringing through. He had counted on her reacting in such a way. "I'm sure I will—" A moment later he rose and stood directly in front of her.
"He might—if his lovely wife will take that come-hither look off her face." He replied, already moving to sweep her up into his arms. "You forget I can see right through you, Mrs. Butler."
FAVOURITE OTPS ♥ ⌐ Scarlett & Rhett - Gone With The Wind
Here’s a soldier of the South who loves you, Scarlett. Wants to feel your arms around him, wants to carry the memory of your kisses into battle with him. Never mind about loving me, you’re a woman sending a soldier to his death with a beautiful memory. Scarlett! Kiss me! Kiss me… once…
nolxdy:
Scarlett huffed and narrowed pale green eyes up at her husband. Snatching her chin out of his grasp and looking forward at him. “You’re just downright awful for lettin’ me go on like that.”
Leave it to Scarlett to blame everything on everyone else but her own self. She crossed her hands in her lap and sat back. “But I will admit that I am mighty tired, Rhett Butler. I remember when Mother was carrying Sue Ellen and she would just sleep for half the entire day!” Scarlett didn’t want to let herself do so though. Loaf around and do nothing. “I don’t see why I have to change my routine just because there’s a baby on the way.”
Dark eyes narrowed and darkened even more with a stiff sort of amusement. He knew if he she hadn't been fussed over her mood would have soured all the same, perhaps more, and he would be sitting here scolded regardless. So he remained listening, keeping lips sealed on that matter.
Hearing her continue, the darkness faded from his eyes. "Delicacies, my dear, women are stock full of them." He couldn't really include her in the group because as far as delicacies were concerned, Scarlett maintained very few unless they were to her benefit. Still it was his child she was carrying and though her brazen spirit was what drew him to her, he wouldn't have her putting their child or herself at risk—but to tell her that would be mean doing just that, so he again sealed his lips. He would assure Mammy knew where he stood on the matter though. "But you Scarlett. . ." He chuckled, clasping a hand over hers, "will paint the town red until the pains of labor take you."
nolxdy:
She’d certainly succeeded in garnering what it was she aimed for: a little attention. Rather more than a little. And it pleased her all the same, but overall the most attention she desired right now was Rhett’s; as if she’d ever admit such aloud. As the time passed on and she received well wishes from her guests, Scarlett topped off the evening where she was sitting upon one of the couches. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d ever felt as fatigued as she did now.
A great big yawn escaped past her lips, back of her hand covering her mouth, Scarlett looked over to Rhett as he moved over to her. “Now I’ve done wore myself thin just to get you to believe me.” Even when given the chance to stop with the dramatics, the switch to turn them off rarely triggered for Scarlett O’hara. “You should be ashamed of yourself, Rhett Butler.”
Rhett liked to think himself immune to Scarlett. He knew her down to the bone but even still, despite the curl in his lip, deep down he could never stand to see her pout. It didn't become her, not unless she was acting foolish. He chided her lightly, "Ooh—" his dark brows creasing as he sat beside her. "Look at my face, my dear." He brought fingers to her chin and tilted it towards him. "Look at my face and tell me you think I don't believe you."

Oh Rhett! Rhett, you are good to me!
nolxdy:
Scarlett didn’t know if she ought to be offended at this moment. He didn’t believe her; and that outcome she hadn’t anticipated. “Oh you’re just so mean Rhett Butler.” Something akin to a scowl found it’s way upon her face and she huffed. “Here I am telling you news of great importance and you accuse me of falsities.”
Turning her back on him, she was more angry than hurt. Good heavens she was not enjoying the flurry of emotions fluctuating within her. If Rhett wasn’t going to believe her, she’d make it so he would. She’d tell the town. Picking up his empty brandy glass, and a fork that was lying near the foods she clanked it. “`Tention `Tention, everybody — I’ve an announcement I’d like to make, if you will.” Scarlett could see some eyes rolling, eyes belonging to her younger sister and Charles’ old belle. “Forgive my lack of interaction with you all tonight, I just wanted to assure you all that it was not so very intentional.” Eyes around the room held curious stares towards her as she spoke, and finally she stopped beating ‘round the bush. “I’m with child, and I’m realizing it’s taking a toll on my energy as you can tell.”
Rhett ought to have known better than to tease her at such a time, especially with such delicate news, yet he figured he'd let her simmer a little while while he thanked and excused their guests before showering her with the joy and affection that threatened to burst from his chest. And then the clinking rang in his ears. He turned back as did the rest of Atlanta and from the moment he heard the clinking of silver on glass he could sense his wrongdoing.
Nevertheless he allowed a smile to spring onto his face as the room roared with a frenzied buzz; the women eager to press themselves forward to congratulate her while the men moved to clap Rhett proudly on the back. Though despite the wide smile he wore his eyes gleamed all too knowing as he glanced over at his beloved wife, and then slowly the reproving glimmer faded as he chuckled.
It would be another hour before the guests settled and another half before they began to depart from their estate. When only a few lingered—easily removed by the servants—Rhett found his way back over to Scarlett.
