hi so the point of rowan and aelin having intensely meaningful past relationships (ie lyria, sam) is the fact that they got to have romantic experiences with others that helped them grow into who they were up until the point of rowaelin meeting each other, but also to show how you can rebuild and learn to live again after losing someone that you love more than anything. therefore fanfiction portraying lyria as a bitch/nothing more than an obstacle for rowan to cheat on or dump in order to get to aelin is completely missing the point. lyria and sam were rowan and aelins first loves and i’m tired of this repeated narrative of demonizing lyria in the fandom.

also, always portraying lyria as a bitch and not sam REEKS of misogynism people. just a thought.

Also, Lyria was an innocent bystander in Maeve being her evil self. She didn’t want to get involved in all this foolishness but she was FORCED to and guess what happened? She fell in love with Rowan and was happy all just so Maeve could fuck it up. Lyria deserves better than how the fandom treats her sometimes.

What I can tell you as a transgender woman is that occasionally I will read trans woman characters written by cisgender authors. And I can pretty much always tell when the author is cis, even if the character is portrayed respectfully, because they get some details wrong or something. But I certainly don’t think that they shouldn’t be allowed to take a stab at it, and I actually appreciate any representation that isn’t egregiously harmful. And I certainly don’t think that only transgender women should be allowed to write transgender women because then it falls on me, and that’s rather tokenizing, isn’t it?

Also it seems like demanding that only #OwnVoices authors should be allowed to write certain characters is an excellent way to enforce a situation where most books are about cishet white people.

And no: you probably won’t get all of the specific details of someone else’s lived experience correct, in much the same way that most authors don’t get all of the specific details about how, say, nuclear reactors or space work. But so long as your character passes as realistically human and not a one-dimensional caricature of what you think that other types of people are like, then I think that that’s reasonable.

Also, sensitivity readers are a thing, and enhance all of the above actions! Paying a reader from the demographic you have written to go over your writing and give constructive feedback is a wonderful thing to do. It benefits both parties involved not only in the financial and craft-honing senses, but also in the exchange of ideas and learning about someone whose perspective and lived experience are different from yours.

ok I canon that Thorne and Cress stay up late snuggling up to each other watching these net dramas. Thorne will probably do that “stretching your arm” move to Cress but she’ll probably just slap his arm away but snuggle up closer && Thorne will pretend that he hates them but secretly loves them & Cress loves it because she never got to do it on her satellite and !!!!!

Remember back when Cress was crazy in love with Thorne but she didn’t think he loved her back? Remember how it was after he gave her, her first kiss and she was so naive that, even though Thorne was the blind one, Cress was the one too blind to realize that he was obviously falling for her, for real, and in a way he’d never felt for other girls?  Remember how Thorne would flirt with literally everyone but her because she was so special to him that he just couldn’t treat her like the others, and also he just didn’t think he deserved her at all. Remember how he thought that he’d sufficiently chased Cress off and made her see that she deserved better. So, he was convinced that she was no longer in love with him at the same time he’d fallen in love with her? Remember how Thorne found out Cress was jealous, confessed his love, and they were together for real? Remember Thorne visiting Cress after the final battle, in which he’d been forced to hurt her and it seemed like they were destined to die for each other before they’d even had a chance to live?

Remember how he promised that he’d spend the rest of his life trying to become the man she always knew he could be so that he could endeavor to deserve her? Remember how Cress, the girl who spent her entire life trapped, first with other shells and then in a satellite, got to travel with the boy of her dreams all over the planet she’d come to love? <33333 This is why I ship Cresswell.
