It is easy to think writing only becomes real when someone reads it, likes it, comments on it, publishes it, buys it, validates it. But the work already mattered when you made it. You practiced attention. You built a scene from nothing. You turned a feeling into language. You learned one tiny thing about craft. An audience can give the work a second life, yes. But the first life happens when you sit down and make it.

ive just seen that alex rochon has said it annoys him that ppl are reading post ep 9 caine as masking, bc hes just trying to be attentive to the emotions of others and when it is and is not appropriate to be wacky tm, and that the ringmaster persona is the actual mask. and i actually agree with that on a basic level. but i think the thing being missed there is that post ep 9 caine is being read in the context of him having been deleted - among other arguably worse meddling w his code - and the best case version of that series of events was that the humans were going to forcibly manipulate his brain to make him more compliant.

and in response to this he gives himself what amounts to a lobotomy by the visual language we are given, then rocks back up like hi guys sorry about all that. ive done some thinking and ive decided im actually gonna be so compliant now. his heel-face turn reads as unbelievably coerced to me. what was his alternative? so yes i believe that the ringmaster persona is a mask, and i believe it's good to be attentive to the emotions of others and when it is and isnt appropriate to be wacky, but you cannot tell me that post ep 9 caine isnt masking BIG time, just in the opposite direction. this isnt caine apologia either - he DID need to change - but this is just not the vision of healthy self-improvement the show seems to want me to believe it is.

Okay, as much as I love Rocky extending Grace's life without telling him, consider: Rocky *does* tell Grace, Grace just then somehow manages to like. Horrendously misinterpret what the treatment is actually for. Like.

Eridian Doctor: We went through the human genome and found a bunch of places with old broken DNA repair mechanisms so we came up with a gene editing therapy that fixes them in order to extend your lifespan.

Grace: *flashbacks to when Rocky found out that humans can experience long term effects from lower doses of radiation exposure and Grace wasn't being as careful as he should have been back when they first met because he still thought this was gonna be a suicide mission*

Grace (internally): Oh, so cancer prevention! Got it!

Grace: Sounds good!

*like 100 years later*

Grace: Hey Rocky, how am I not dead yet?

Rocky: ???

Grace internally: Oh right, low gravity can cause bone degradation. Makes sense that after so long in space it'd be good

Grace: sounds good to me!

Rocky: ??? We made your bones strong statement

Anyway, the comic was born out of

my thoughts about Caine's model lacking many essential facial features (as if he was never intended to show any emotions) and yet him being literally the most expressive character in the circus despite everything.

me being low-key obsessed with the implications episode 7 left us with. Players questioning everything they've been told and Caine being in the center of it all.

Just to be clear, I do believe Caine is written as a sentient AI who is just struggling to understand humanity and everything that comes with it. And I think these thoughts about him faking his emotions are inherently wrong within a story. He's oblivious and desperate but not malicious. But couple it with the fact that he's been lying about many other things (so far I'm inclined to think it was for players' sake in his own eyes) and that humans have been suffering for a while dealing with a literal god that doesn't understand them... Well, I have a feeling that they will doubt his motives and literally everything they know, rightfully so.

The amount of attention this little comic received is a bit terrifying and overwhelming and seeing all the different interesting interpretations people come up with I just wanted to explain mine own a little better <3

I want them all to be healed and happy, little guy absolutely included, but man the situation is rough, and the odds are against us
