I finally found a copy of this book after years of searching! Such a treasure trove of information, I’m so happy to finally have a copy I can reference!
I’m going to have to get my own copy now 😅
Best of luck! They usually go for between $100-300, I spent $65 on this one (anything below $100 is a good deal). I’d highly recommend adding it to your wishlist on used bookstore sites so you can get notified when one is in stock.
Also worth noting that this is the second edition, I’ve never read through a first edition so I couldn’t tell you the differences in content. There is a different cover, and the first edition was published in the 80s, this one was published in ‘93.
Genuinely wishing anyone who wants a copy the best of luck, it sucks when fantastic resources are out-of-print and cost a lot of money. My hope is that sharing the prices I commonly see can help folks get a sense of when it’s worth jumping on a sale and when it’s just plain old price gouging.
I’m also more than happy to send photos of certain pages to anyone if you know what you want information on btw!

Me remembering halfway through posing hands in a drawing that I HAVE hands and can use them for reference
It is thanks to this that so many of my hands just look weird...because I am hypermobile...and I tend to forget that most people's hands don't do that.
Like a couple years ago I drew someone with their hand flat on a table and my fellow art friend was all 'that looks so fake, use a reference for hands next time' and I demonstrated the reference I used and we both had a laugh at my perfectly flat 90 degree angle wrist, just like the drawing.
it IS spooky season. to me.
OH HO HO you bet it fuckin is
Big stretch
I am straight up loving watching conservatives and city slickers who decided to start a ‘homestead’ during the pandemic make videos that are like “This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. 🥺 I’m giving up on my farm and moving back to the suburbs.” no shit, fr? Cosplaying Little House on the Prairie actually sucks?
If you actually want to home stead:
Have a fuckton of money saved up. No, not just the amount you need to start the home stead. Living expenses for a year in case you fail money.
Research for like, a year minimum.
Apprentice with successful home steaders. They can teach you the ropes. Bonus: you’ll find out if the life is really for you.
Get to know the community you’ll be living around. Support them, and they will support you. Successful home steading actually relies on groups more than you’d think.
Have the skills to easily reenter the job market, or get a remote job. Or at least some kind of backup plan. The failure rate is ridiculously high.
Never buy a property without access to water!!!
Write down the reasons you might quit, with real…anti goals. If you meet a certain threshold, get out! This should help with the sunk cost fallacy.
Ask a real home steader. I’m just a person who watches lots of videos.
