I wanted to make an intro blog so here we go!

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The turtle brothers! I really like them. I don’t feel fully satisfied with my art style for them or for any TMNT version yet, but I’m trying. Rise definitely hit me in a different way. Even though I grew up with TMNT 2012, Rise was a unique experience.

I’ll admit something: I never really went deep into TMNT before. When I was little, a few hours before going to school, I’d watch an episode or another of TMNT 2012. I thought it was cool. I started liking Raph the most because I identified with him, especially because of the anger issues. I watched the episodes all out of order, sometimes repeating the same ones, but I never stopped to really dive deeper into it.

Then years went by without me watching anything Ninja Turtles related. I might’ve seen one thing or another over time, maybe just the live-action movie that came out, but nothing after that. Then, much later — long after all the ROTTMNT seasons and the movie — I saw some videos and edits from Rise. The animation style was incredible! It looked like an anime. It made me curious about the turtle world again.

I finally gathered the courage to watch it. At the time, I thought it was different. I knew Leonardo, the blue turtle, was the leader and the “older brother,” so seeing a version where the red one — Raph, already my favorite — was now the oldest and the leader made me fall even more in love with him. And even more because he wasn’t just that personification of anger and sarcasm, but loving and caring too. Plus, he was a gentle giant, which I’ve always loved!

And everything else — Leo, Donnie, Mikey, April, all of it! After that, I felt like revisiting the version I grew up with but never finished, the 2012 boys, and I finally immersed myself in this whole Ninja Turtles journey.

Every version is interesting and loved in its own way, but Rise will definitely always be the golden piece that brought me into this green world.

I absolutely hate clothing characters, but it is a skill I do want to have. So I must suffer through the practice phase.

To make it more fun, I worked on imagining formal outfits for section 5:

Please ignore the fact they have no shoes. I’m focusing one making the clothing and fabric look okay, there isn’t enough brain space left to worry about shoes (my greatest enemy). Imagine some dress shoes or something fancy.

Thought processes/ head canons?/ inspiration:

Leonidas

My interpretation of Leonidas so far is that he does what he wants. He does have self control, but doesn’t see the point in using it most times (he isn’t gonna mess up any missions, but he’s also not gonna pass on anything he considers interesting). This makes him dangerous as a lot of impulses are pretty bad. It also means that he will not dress up formal with the whole suit and tie just because he doesn’t want to. He’ll put a nice leather jacket over his tank top, but, unless Mikhail specifically asks him to and gives him a good reason, this is the best you’re gonna get.

(I’m pretty sure Chess did draw a picture of Leo in something formal a long time ago, but ehh this is just my head canon :))

I saw some biker jackets with all kinds of cool stripes and patterns and thought it would be a cool way to show Leonidas’ arm stripes even though they are covered.

Rafid

I don’t know why, but I feel that Rafid would be the most comfortable or have the least issues with dressing formal. I imagine that all the small holes for all his spikes are very well tailored by Donovan, who has a lot of experience with dealing with all his spikes. Perhaps, Don developed a specialized fabric to make sure his clothes won’t tear from Raf wearing and taking off the clothes.

He’s such a dapper man ❤️ I actually really love how he turned out. I thought about giving him scars on his tail, but wasn’t really sure since Chess hadn’t drawn any. Or at least from the images I’m referencing from.

Donovan

My current interpretation is that while Raf has more specialized knowledge (like being very good at reading people and working with specific technologies), Don is more of a generalist. He will want to learn about and research anything that makes him curious/interested. This leads to him to have a vast amount of knowledge in almost everything. If you ask him about something he doesn’t know, even if he didn’t explicitly learn about it, he probably seen it while learning about other things. Of course he made his entire outfit.

So in his outfit, he wouldn’t have anything very big or flashy, but will absolutely have some magnificent tie art. (You stare at it a little too long trying to figure out how he made it. “My eyes are up here”. You quickly look up and give a quick apology. The corner of his mouth stays tilted up during the rest of the conversation.)

I fell down a little rabbit hole of tie art. I don’t wear ties, I’ll likely never use this knowledge in my life, so it gets dumped on to Don.

Mikhail

I couldn’t really come up with an outfit that felt as good as this one that Chess drew:

Absolutely adore it. If I can think of something that isn’t an exact copy of this, I’ll post it later.

…HOWEVER, I'm certainly not picky about scar placement as I'm generally not consistent with them myself [ ...they have A LOT of them ]-- [ ...I just casually fill the space with them because they're pretty-- //Cackles-- ]

...I think the only ones I make an effort to be consistent are the ones on Mikhail's face and around Rafid's neck because they're lore-relevant--

And here comes our favorite spooky month! Everyone run to put on your scariest costumes and the dirtiest bullshit! After all, on this holiday, the most important thing is not a beautiful outfit, but an intimidating look!!!!

And it is on this day that turtles can take to the streets of New York in all their glory, and people don't even imagine that four mutant turtles can wander among them!... And a rat, okay...

Unfortunately, this holiday is not celebrated in my country, which is why I have to stay at home, because if I go outside in a vampire costume, for example, they will not give me sweets, but they will send me to a mental hospital, hehe. But it's good that I have you and I can spend this holiday with people close to me.

“The Incident.” AKA the event that caused Donnie to make matching visors for all his brothers in Replica. How kind of him. In Leo's defense, I'm sure he needed Dee’s visor for a very good reason... but he broke Donnie's favorite mug in the process which is unforgivable.

Hello, I was wondering if I could ask for drawing advice, I was drawing 2 of the turtles back to back with their head against each other but I don't know how to do that cause of their shells bumping into one another. (It's the Mutant Mayhem boys) and I was wondering if you would have any advice

Aw man this one got left a long time, I'm sorry!

There are a lot of different answers to a posing issue like that, but I personally would approach it from a standpoint that there isn't really a way for them to be sitting straight back to back and have their heads touch. You can angle the two bodies so they work with the curve of the shell, kind of like this?
