i wasn’t kidding when i made that EC comics joke about gigi! you’d never guess it with the way my art looks now, but i used to be OBSESSED with vintage horror and lowbrow illustration and it influenced my art and interests for many years.

while gigi’s characterization is heavily inspired by melodramatic characters from old movies, i associate old pulp horror with her visually.

ryan heshka is a contemporary artist of this genre and one of my favorite artists ever—he just captures the totally weird and wild world of pulp that i love, and his work informs my design decisions for gigi so much!

invoking weird glamour campiness with the innate horror that comes with ghoulification truly feels like coming back to something very familiar. maybe that’s why i like gigi so much. 💚

ilya brings her up twice in ep2 shane asks who taught him the world sexting and he says your mother. and he says did your mom buy these pillows. ilya is ruminating on #hisenmeshment i know he is. he looked up into the stands way back at the prospect cup and saw shane there with his mother. ep2 also the first time we find out ilya’s own mother is dead, and while he says my father maybe my brother will be at the olympics the moment we actually find out is when he says (carefully) mama’s dead. to his father. who has forgotten 😩
