There are people who don’t like that despite Bob loving his wife he still feels emasculated by her career success and his role as a homemaker. Overcoming his “They’re sending a woman to do a man’s job!” feelings is Bob’s arc and he begrudgingly learns his lesson in the end, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that some women would prioritize having a husband that see’s and treats her as an equal from the get-go over one for whom learning to respect his wife is a character arc. As Lauryn Hill taught us, respect is just the minimum.

I know it’s not the most nuanced and sensitively handled piece of media but I’m so glad the Purge went from subtle social commentary to full on “Fuck the government, fuck the KKK and neo Nazis and the NRA, here are the poor black communities fighting back against government sanctioned genocide”
Each film has a great overarching theme as well
The Purge: the rich will literally not care about the death of the poor at the hands of the government until the violence inflicted on them is brought to their doorstep, the only exception among the rich being the young and empathetic
Purge Anarchy: the government is straight up lying when they say the Purge is working, and there are significant groups of resistance who have lost someone to an abusive government who come together to fight for each other
Purge Election Year: the only way to bring change to an abusive government is by supporting and electing officials who are working against the existing abusive regime, and that regime will often stop at nothing to prevent that kind of change, so people should never stop fighting for their chosen leaders
The First Purge: your government will manipulate results in order to make themselves look good. They will lie, they will pay to make something look more effective than it actually is, if they will profit from it. The government is anti-poor and racist as all get out and the community will protect each other more than an abusive government ever will.
It’s not a perfect series but I’m so glad the creators have no fucks left to give regarding their message.
Agreed. The First Purge really surprised me with how front and center its message is. It’s not as elegant as Get Out and can be a little heavy-handed but it’s still a pretty powerful sci-fi allegory.
In the article ‘The First Purge’: Director Gerard McMurray Crafted a Horror Film About Being a Black Man in America, the director says “The idea of The Purge deals with horrors of the real world...What I see as real and as horrific, that’s scarier than ghosts. The government is the boogeyman. The IRS is scary. Not aliens, not supernatural, that stuff—the KKK in the streets at night, Charlottesville, that’s scary. That’s horror.”
Even though all the Purge movies are political they usually leave room for you to root for purging from a horror movie perspective because you want to see cool kills and a high body count, but The First Purge has a realism and a focus that makes every kill almost as emotional as if you were reading about it in the news, at least that’s how I felt. That’s obviously a matter of perspective though, considering I read reviewers complaining that there isn’t as much violence as in previous entries in the franchise; kind of shows that the movie didn’t land with the right audience. Would have been interesting to see if people would have responded to it differently if it were the first film instead of the fourth.
its irrelevant if into the spiderverse is amazing im sick of people acting like mainstream franchise films are in anyway representative of marginalized artists/indicative of any kind of underdog “success” story they aren’t, they never will be, a marvel film winning best animated feature upholds a depressing status quo regardless of its content, storytelling or style. I want people to be able to make ambitious art outside of studio confines or tired ass IP and for independent films to hold national attention and that’s what you should want if you care about the medium of film at all
Independent artists make ambitious work outside of studio confines every day. Mainstream films pushing the limits of animation—and using beloved and recognizable characters to do it—is what inspires new generations of independent artists to do the same. Marvel’s mainstream influence makes it that much more impactful when characters like Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel or America Chavez are introduced because it’s not just about representation or attracting a new audience, it’s about challenging and educating the existing audience. Whatever nefarious capitalistic intentions may have brought these characters into existence, Jason Reynolds is still a black author who used Miles Morales: Spider-Man to talk about systematic oppression and Gabby Rivera is still a queer latina activist who used America to disrupt the status quo at Marvel. The content is as relevant as the people who are affected by it. There’s no reason not to celebrate both mainstream and independent animation for their progress—and there’s no reason to use a corrupt institution like the Oscars to validate either of them.

Nobody snuck President's Day into Black History Month. Carter G. Woodson—author of The Miseducation of the Negro and initiator of Negro History Week, which would become Black History Month—chose February to honor Frederick Douglass and yr boy Abraham Lincoln because their birthdays fell during that month. We know now that Abraham Lincoln was a slave-owning scumbag who wished he could have found a convenient way to end the war without abolishing slavery, but post-slavery Black Americans recognized his birthday as a celebration of their emancipation.
Also, President's Day existed for about 40 years before Negro History Week was founded in the 1920's. Y'all's first Black History lesson should be the history of Black History Month.

Do you like the show Boondocks?
I watched most of it, but I wouldn’t defend it against accusations of wrongdoing from certain kinds of critics. Like, the fact that it has no substantial female characters, the prominence of Uncle Ruckus, and that Bill Cosby-esque phenomenon of hyper-public criticisms of black people by black people being perverted as justification for racist attitudes, etc…
I felt like the comic strip was more conscious of its (primarily white) readership and was doing a civic duty by having a black radical character challenge white supremacy, whereas the show put more emphasis on making fun of black American culture. It just seemed like a waste of the platform. I was disappointed with the show when it first came out because I had really loved the comic strip; it had me ready to join the Nation of Islam in middle school.
