ah yes. my personal favourite moment from the book: the first time Rocky realises Grace is the most intelligent idiot he’s ever met

“I return to the tunnel to tell Rocky about how smart I am.” ,,,, bro could only call you bad because he simply didn’t have the words to describe ur silliness grace let’s not hype ourselves up too soon.

Rocky picks up bad habits from spending so much time with Grace. Chief among them is finishing other Eridians sentences.

Human’s interrupt each other to help when someone forgets a word or to show that they’re paying attention and following along. It’s a sign of knowing someone well. Eridians only interrupt when there’s incorrect or overriding information, it’s a sign of taking control of the discussion.

Especially towards the end of Grace’s food supply, he’d depended on Rocky being able to predict what he was going to say. Not only was it common for Rocky to finish his thoughts, he was also capable of reading Grace so well they needn’t speak aloud at all.

All of this is incredibly frustrating to other Eridians because it means Rocky both talks over them and can just look at the alien and know what it’s thinking. Adrian makes him work on the interrupting and finishing sentences, but they don’t know what to do about the other thing. They suppose they’ll just have to “roll with it.”

ive had this scene stuck in my brain for so long, so here goes

at some point, the eridian scientists must have made a... more comfortable suit for rocky or grace to walk around in. thinner, more flexible, similar to that small panel on rockys ball. what if they could hug and feel each others temperature through that?

well, since humans run at about 37°C and eridians at 200°C, if grace were to hug rocky, it would go something along the lines of this:

grace: [hugs rocky, hissing slightly at rockys warm ass body] grace: "wow, rock, youre really wa-" rocky: [trying his damn bestest to stay still] rocky: "COLD COLD COLD GRACE COLD GRACE VERY COLD. GRACE LET GO OF ROCKY NOW NOW. GRACE-" rocky: [remembering hugs are a normal thing for humans, and that grace probably needs this] "...cold. grace rocky hug done, question?"

he then proceeds to ask a thousand questions about humans and their body temperature after grace finally lets him go

I know it’s probably not meant this way, but Rocky insisting Grace do the puppet show when they’re planning how to sample Adrian’s Petrova line felt to me like Rocky wanted it for Grace’s benefit than his own

“Too fast” not meaning Grace was talking too fast, but thinking too fast and missing the obvious (just staying in Adrian’s orbit)

Basically just “stop rushing the plan, just take a second to look at where we’ll be”

Also to make him feel dumb for a second when he finally sees it

Grace’s Eridian class takes a field trip to his dome.

Rocky and some of the parents act as chaperones since even young Eridians are too heavy for Grace, depending on how old he is. Even though all his students ask for is to be picked up.

He has to clean his house since everyone wants a tour and he has to explain the things they sent him from Earth. Like clothes. And coffee mugs.

They play tag on the beach while Grace explains how the dome is temperature/pressure controlled. The parents ask him about their kids grades. Grace gets asked to do parent teacher conferences in the future.

His students ask if they can take him on a field trip next to see their homes and Rocky has to explain how much air Grace would need for a trip like that, so probably not.

The kids make Rocky build Grace little versions of their homes and he puts them all together like a small lego city of all his students.
