“It is such a folly to pass one’s time fretting, instead of resting quietly on the heart of Jesus.”
— St. Therese of Lisieux
Gaspar de Crayer - The Descent from the Cross, between 1630 and 1669
“Francis, go and rebuild my church which, as you see, is falling down.”
Saint Francis of Assisi by Sofia Novelli.
if anything, porn websites should be paywalled or require age verification. But I'm sure these websites would start an uproar about it. They know children are watching porn and they don't care.
“Do not fear the storms of earth…. Your guardian angel is covering you with his wings, and Jesus, the purity of virgins, reposes in your heart…. They are there with Mary, who is hiding you also under her veil!”
— St. Thérèse of Lisieux

tumblr really does love to enable bad behaviors by coming up with guiltless explanations, huh
“are you always late to things? its actually because you’ve been traumatized by world events and not just because you don’t keep track of time”
“if you struggle to eat healthily its because you are all actually neurosivergent and not because you lack self discipline”
see what i mean. tumblr loves to come with reasons as to why their problems arent actually their fault, so that they have no responsibility for them.
It is not just tumblr—the entirely of western society lately has been oriented towards:
Absolving people of guilt for things that are typically one’s own fault (e.g. unhealthy habits, addictions, rude personalities, criminal behaviors, etc.), and
Saddling people with guilt for things that are generally not one’s own fault (e.g. slavery, colonization, past government policies, the climate, etc).
Together, these create an endless cycle of hopelessness by encouraging people to persist in behaviors that make them unhappy while despairing over past and/or macro-level problems they never had any substantial control over anyway.
That cycle usually produces only two kinds of people:
The Dispirited: people who are so mired in despair they neither take no joy nor find any comfort in anything and instead try to self-soothe with more self-destructive behaviors like drugs, pornography, terminal laziness, etc. (i.e. the “Why would I bother getting a job or starting a family when the world is going to end in ten years because of climate change?” types).
The Insufferable: the woke warriors who turn their despair into hatred by impotently crusading against every perceived societal ill while turning a blind eye to their own faults. (i.e. the “Expecting me to be on time to work is racist against myself and other BIPOC and is a privileged expectation with roots in slavery” types).
Genuine faith is the primary off-ramp from the road to hopelessness, but that is a much larger conversation.
Yup…

This looks like peace.
Every time you say a Hail Mary, you’re handing a rose to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I’d also like to think that the prayers we give for each other are also little flowers we give each other. Maybe not as beautiful as a rose, but like little dandelions young children excitedly pick and bring home for their mothers. Imperfect maybe, but radiating in love.

The Real Work by Wendell Berry
It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come our real work,
and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.
“Just pray: ‘Lord, grant me Thy grace!’ For when there is a cloud of griefs over you and you pray: ‘Lord, grant me Thy grace,’ the Lord will carry you past the storm.”
~St. Nectarius Of Optina

“Only the man who has had to face despair is really convinced that he needs mercy. Those who do not want mercy never seek it. It is better to find God on the threshold of despair than to risk our lives in a complacency that has never felt the need of forgiveness. A life that is without problems may literally be more hopeless than one that always verges on despair.”
— ― Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island
