hey so filming people without their consent is weird. you know that right? filming people you don't know and they aren't aware of what you're doing is creepy. posting strangers online is fucking weird. we're too comfortable with doing it now for shits and giggles, chasing some sort of viral hit instead of reckoning with the fact that you posted someone who did not consent to their body and face being publically used.

we're being pushed these Meta Glasses as if mass surveillance of strangers is fun and normal! it's weird!!! there are already reports that people are using these to film women without them knowing and sharing it to communities who get off on this shit. who else knows who people are filming. these glasses with cameras are not obvious and that is dangerous.

Also, I wrote 2 WHOLE PARAGRAPHS on how the AU surged and it got deleted (damn you Tumblr) but the point is that just like Harlan poured his feelings into ihnmaims, I'm pouring mine + many other interests such as movies, nature itself, mythology etc into it. I get the main point of the story, and this being an AU is just a "but what if... ☝️".

More assorted thoughts about this, tentative title "Masked Dad & Magic Daughter," and names for the main characters:

Sara Raymond / Magi Star, the daughter

Ken Raymond / Red Striker, the dad

POV shifts between Sara and Ken, with Sara as just slightly more the main protagonist, and their relationship isn't perfect or conflict-free but it is overall healthy and stable

Meiko Raymond (Ken's wife and Sara's mom) isn't super but was Ken's intrepid reporter love interest back in his hero days, so she knows his secret and has experience dealing with hero stuff, and now she's the family breadwinner with her journalism while Ken is the homemaker

They kept Ken's hero past secret to give Sara a normal life, and she didn't tell them about becoming a magical girl, but when her first monster attacks Ken shows up to fight it too and they recognize each other

Ken is a cyborg empowered by science (albeit soft scifi "Science!") while Sara was given magic by a cute mascot creature. The monsters are magic too, and Ken can still help fight them but only Sara can properly defeat them

Ken fought the crime syndicate BAD GEAR led by the mad scientist Dr. Brigand and his cyborg enforcers, while Sara fights monsters called Voidars created by the Oblivion Witch from the emptiness in people's hearts

From the way her magic and monsters work it's clear that Sara would be in a grimdark magical girl deconstruction, except her parents' support makes a BIG difference for her fighting skills, genre savviness, and perhaps most importantly mental health

Ken confiding in Meiko about how hard it is watching Sara risk her life over and over and wishing she wouldn't but knowing if she didn't other people would get hurt, and Meiko gently reminding him that she's felt the same way about him this whole time and sharing how she copes with it

Clashes in their aesthetics and genre conventions are mostly played for laughs, with Ken being weirded out by Sara's mascot, Sara being comically scared to ride on Ken's motorcycle Motostrike, each of them having mixed opinions about each other's transformation sequences, etc.

Sarah's mascot is a long-eared magical creature named Byunni who says "byun!" as a verbal tic. The Raymonds all agree it looks like a rabbit, despite its insistence that it's not. It's initially just using Sara for its own scheme, until Ken catches on and threatens it, and from then on it supports her like its life depends on it.

The biggest conflict between Sara and her parents is over Sara's relationship with her rival Natasha, AKA Magi Shadow, a dark magical girl who works for the Oblivion Witch. Despite meeting as enemies, Sara can tell she's lonely and tries to reach out to her, leading to a friendship and eventually romance blooming between them. Ken and Meiko are quick to make it clear they have no problem with Sara liking girls, but a BIG problem with her dating a villain!

Their disapproval of Natasha come from experience with Ken's own villains: his dark counterpart, Bad Striker, was completely evil and rejected every chance at redemption, and a female enemy he fell in love with (before he and Meiko were official), Stiletto Gear, died tragically when she tried to leave BAD GEAR. They just don't want Sara to get her heart broken

What resolves this conflict is Sara telling her parents about Natasha's awful home life and how she only fell to darkness because the Oblivion Witch, while evil and abusive, still offered her more love than her bio family did. This activates Ken and Meiko's protective parent instincts which totally overrule their distrust of villains, and they join Sara's efforts to save Natasha and warmly embrace her as their future daughter-in-law

I guess the central theme of the story is the importance of parents supporting their kids and kids being able to rely on their parents
