it's kind of amazing to me just which parts of planes are important and which aren't

like, the concorde can lose half of its rudder and the crew doesn't even notice, and a boeing 707 can lose one engine and twenty-five feet of wing and still land safely, but when an embraer brasilia loses the leading edge of one side of the horizontal stabilizer, it goes straight into an unrecoverable dive bad enough "the wreckage was spread over a 2- to 4-square-mile area"
