Regulus checked the post every day because his brother always signed his letters “write again soon.” Sirius never sent another after that first Christmas home. Reg still checked, just in case.
Regulus was terrified to ride the train by himself and was ecstatic to finally be at school with his brother. Then he watched, souring, as Sirius left his side to greet James Potter instead.
Regulus spent the whole first night at Hogwarts expecting Sirius to sneak his way down to the dungeons for a lark. He’d bragged about managing it before. He never did show up.
Regulus was secretly pleased by Sirius’s pranks because, for a little while, it felt like he still had a brother—until one went too far. That was their last proper fight, right there in the hospital wing. James & Remus pulled them apart. Regulus called Remus a half-breed, and Sirius spat in his face.
Sirius never asked Regulus to leave Grimmauld; by the time he had made the decision to, he knew Regulus was a lost cause.
Sirius paid for his freedom with Regulus's. Spare became heir. The Blacks had lost one son. They would never let the other go so easily.
Sirius misses Regulus so terribly it makes him nauseous, so he tries his hardest to forget about him.
Regulus misses Sirius so terribly it makes him furious, so he tries his hardest to hate him.
1978 is the first time Sirius sees 16 November on the calendar and doesn’t think about Regulus at all (until that night, when he jolts awake and says, half-asleep, “shit—I forgot to tell Reg happy birthday.” Sleepily, Remus pulls him close, and reminds him that he hasn’t spoken to Regulus in nearly four years)
