Consent: If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. Take the pledge to help stop sexual assault at ItsOnUs.org.
i don’t think that bi/pan/poly people are aware of how damaging it is to actual lesbian women and gay men to call themselves gay or lesbian when they are not. for example, just a couple weeks ago, this guy was hitting on me. i told him that i was gay, but he proceeded to keep hitting on me. i told him “i only like girls, i’m a lesbian, i’ve already told you,” and he goes “OH wait you’re gay-gay? like, completely gay?” and it just amazed me because he literally thought there was some other type of gay that wasn’t completely gay. for another example, my lesbian friend came out to our other friend as gay, but she misunderstood and thought that she still liked men and was “gay” but “not completely gay”. this is distorting how the word gay, literally created to describe gay men (especially gay men) and lesbian women, is used.
it also causes people to question the validity of our identities. it causes them to think that they are fluid because, “if this bi women calls herself a lesbian, then she’s a lesbian, so other lesbians must like men too !!” which is obviously an entirely bigoted, wrong, and backwards way of thinking.
not to mention, by calling yourselves gay when you’re not ? you’re erasing yourself. you’re erasing the fact that you’re bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, etc. you’re not using the words specific to your identity while taking the words specific to our identities.
you’re using words wrong. calling yourself gay when you are bi/pan/poly because you also happen to be attracted to the same gender is like calling yourself straight because you happen to be attracted to the opposite gender as well. which i’m sure none of you would do, because if someone were to call you straight, you’d probably (as you should) immediately correct them, like, “no, i’m bi/pan/poly”. so why call yourselves gay ?
Alright I’m gonna stop calling myself gay when we stop referring to same sex marriage as “gay marriage”. I’ll stop calling myself gay when lgbtq+ rights will stop being just “gay rights”. I’ll stop calling myself gay when you all stop referring to the lgbtq+ as the “gay community”. I’ll stop calling myself gay when we actually talk about the mental health problems of other people than just gay and lesbians ones. I’ll stop calling myself gay when you all stop assuming that people in a same sex relationship are automatically gay/lesbian.
I’ll stop calling myself gay when you all stop erasing my identity.
my favorite thing (by favorite i mean the most disgusting thing) about this is how everyone is reblogging this without listening to anything that gay and lesbian people are saying and are actively blaming gay and lesbian people for how straight media talks about the lgbtq+ community - which we cannot control. you took this entire post which consisted of me, a lesbian, talking about the negative impact that people who are not gay calling themselves gay has had on my life as a lesbian and took it as an opportunity to - once again - completely pull the attention off of lesbian/gay people and back onto yourselves. i hope all of you reblogging this with the second comment realize that, whether you know it or not, you are putting lesbian women and gay men in danger. you are actively putting us at a higher risk of sexual assault / corrective rape, while actively giving people of the opposite gender an excuse to sexually harass us - “she said she was gay, i didn’t know she meant GAY gay. how was i supposed to know she didn’t want it?” we’re not trying to be “mean” by saying that if you’re not gay that you cannot yourselves gay, we’re doing this to try to PROTECT ourselves and keep our sexualities valid. you’re not listening to us, but i don’t know what else i expected.

President Obama after Oregon shooting: “Our thoughts and prayers are not enough.”
Hours after today’s massacre in Oregon, President Obama took the podium for the 15th time after a mass shooting. Sounding stern and appearing frustrated, Obama challenged Americans to respond more forcefully to this shooting. His full, impassioned statement is one every American needs to hear.

These feminist high schoolers are using ‘The Scarlet Letter’ to protest dress codes
Students at Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston, South Carolina, have had enough. Too many girls have been sent home because of a strict dress code policy that they claim targets girls unfairly. Now, they’re doing something about it. Not just to protest the dress code — but also how it’s being enforced.

From the New York Times:
“The police chief identified the officer [who killed Tony Robinson] as Matthew Kenny, 45, a 12-year veteran. He was placed on paid administrative leave until the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation completes an inquiry and a decision is reached by the Dane County district attorney on whether to press charges.
Officer Kenny was involved in a fatal shooting in 2007 that Chief Koval described as “suicide by cop.” In that incident, Officer Kenny shot and killed Ronald Brandon, 48, after Mr. Brandon pointed what turned out to be a pellet gun at police officers, the chief said. The Dane County district attorney ruled the shooting as justified, and the Madison Police Department awarded Officer Kenny its medal of valor.
Chief Koval said the officer had fired more than once, but he did not say how many times the man had been wounded.
The altercation was the third fatal shooting involving a Madison police officer since an April law requiring police shootings to be investigated by an outside agency, according to The Wisconsin State Journal.”
I love how Fox News is calling for #BLM to be called a hate group because of officers who have been killed like they weren’t the ones who said that 2 white Tea Partiers who *ambushed 2 police officers on their lunch break and draped a Gadsden flag on their bodies and killed another person* last year shouldn’t represent a movement (that is when they bothered to cover it at all). And as though they weren’t on the side of Cliven Bundy’s folks actually *pointing guns at federal agents* in a standoff. Fox News is a fucking joke and their audience lives for this shit.
People will write entire think-pieces on how culture influences and enables violence in black communities but as soon as police kill black people, then they wanna talk about a ‘few bad apples’ and not the culture.
