I saw your latest post about Moon Lovers & the reason why there are 2 different versions (from what I understand) is because the production faced criticism from the K-audience with the initial 3 episodes (more to do with the flow of the show etc), so SBS decided to air the Directors cut for the Korean audience in order to gain viewership. Since the show was pre-produced so they could broadcast it simultaneously for the international market (in particular China) they wouldn't be able to -
retract those episodes and swap it over. Which leaves us with Korea’s Version vs International Version, which is frustrating to say the least. I just don’t understand how they stuffed this up.
Hey thanks!
I did actually know the background but the reason I was asking ‘which one I should follow’ is because as you said it’s frustrating! There are clear differences between the two versions and your viewing experience is different depending on which version you are watching. And if you need subs like me chances are you are stuck watching the international version, then filling in the gaps with the korean one. I guess the Director’s cut is more legit because at least the background music is better, but at the same time I don’t always like that versions editing decisions either. for e.g. how they had haphazardly inserted footage from an earlier episode in episode 6.
Isn’t it weird? I don’t think I’ve ever been so frustrated by the technical side of a drama before! I really would like to know who was making the editing decisions. I can totally get behind moon lovers plot and characters but the editing and ost are real bummers!
Haphazard thoughts Episode 7 Moon Lovers
-Ugh Eun - what a stupid privileged baby. It’s not that he falls for Yo’s scheming that annoys me. It’s that he really doesn’t pick up on the vibe in the room and back down. Jung had a somewhat similar scene when he lashes back at So when the latter reprimands him but Ji Soo is way better at potraying pigheaded pride than Baekhyun is in potraying sheer stupidity. Also, if you wanted the 10th prince to be a 10 year old - just cast a 10 year old!
I really wish the show had better potrayed the differences in character when it comes to the younger princes. There’s a tendency to cast both Jung and Eun young adorable goofballs (with Baek Ah joining in at times). Except it gets annoying after a point!
- Yeonhwa - okay, I know everyone hates her but I do like the idea that her plan to get power is to put Wook on the throne. In a way it’s about ensuring that her family has power and they aren’t ever cast out again. Which I can sort of respect. Her attraction to So is based on the idea that he’d be a powerful if savage ally to her brother if he’s on their side. I may not like her but yay for character motivation! Also weirdly enough, I love the actress’s smile even when she says the meanest things. And she does have a really pleasant voice. (what? I don’t have to hate the evil second lead girl all the time! Besides all my hate this episode is transferred to the 10 year old brat)
- Yay for more Su & So interaction - I am really interested in seeing if we’ll slip into angst the moment So’s fully aware of his feelings or will they keep their relationship easy and open albiet at times intense. I love that the difference between Wook and So is still being brought out through the scar. I prefer So who point blank talks to her about it rather than Wook who wants to hide it away ‘under a never to be taken off’ bracelet. Wook has trouble meeting So’s eyes without the mask, but Su just looks at him, not at his scar. That’s sort of acceptance for So would be so strange and alien. Of course he’s going to fall for it!
- Su & Wook - sigh sigh sigh, I would feel for anyone who ships them because they are super sweet, aren’t they? Which means, the angst is going to be even worse, isn’t it? I found it curious how the korean version cuts down on the Su-Wook interaction while there’s a lot more in the Chinese version. I wonder why that is the case. Is it just general criticism from the audience against the earlier married man - heroine romance? Or does the production have suddenly cold feet in showing that the heroine could have a passionate romance with more than one person?
- Baek Ah - I am still annoyed they aren’t developing the Su- Baek Ah friendship properly yet. There is not a single proper interaction between the two and I really wanted their friendship to be epic. sigh.On the other hand, he does seem a lot closer to So now, that is something.
God, the background score is so off, but the editing is a bit better? But honestly you really think overlaying IU singing with crappy ost on top and dialogue is the way to appeal to the audience? really? Weird show, I put up with a lot for you!
“- Jackson ! - Yes ? - Did I tell you this ? I really like you, Jackson. Without regards for whether it’s a man and woman, I just like you as a person. The human being Jackson… No, I really liked you as human being, Kim Hye Jin.”
- She Was Pretty (Shin Hyeok)
Stuff I really liked about Episode 6
- Su saving herself like a badass - I am watching both Moon Lovers and Love in the Moonlight and they both feature multiple scenes of damsels in distress. I was just thinking last week, I want a scene with the damsel saving herself, where her intended saviours are left gaping (something like what happens in that old movie Ever After!). And it literally happened in the next episode! So Very Pleased! I actually even love how drastic a step it is, because it just shows that when push comes to shove, Su will do what it takes! I love that!
- So’s attitude towards Su – It’s definitely not love yet, but I like the fact that it’s taking time! In fact I love his whole attitude. It’s not really indifference. He does want to help her. In fact, he’s willing to help her in the forest at the risk of pissing off the King himself. But he listens to her; even trusts her to look after herself. All the while, behind the scenes, he’s also trying to find a solution. Do I think he’d have tried harder, gone more berserk, if he was truly in love with her? Yeah definitely! But I like that you can see she grows in his esteem in this episode. I love he’s part of our Su Appreciation Society!!!
- Wook grieving Lady Hae’s loss – I know a lot of people have issues with Wook over his treatment of her. But I am not going to get into that. What I love is that he’s crying about not being able to convey his feelings when she was around. The thing is - I know for a fact that when a loved one dies, a lot of people have that guilt. That they couldn’t say goodbye, couldn’t say they loved them, couldn’t right old hurts and wrongs. It’s almost common place how many people feel that mixture of guilt and regret and I love how well Kang Ha Neul conveys it. I love how he knows he sounds pathetic later on asking his wife’s spirit to help with the Su situation. I know it rains down moral judgments but I like my flawed heroes being aware of their flaws
- The Princes going to So for Help – Yes! Finally! I know this is going to be heart breaking when they start fighting over the throne but I love how they sort of trust So to be the one to help Su. Of course it has precedence. He put himself out there to save the crown prince; he stopped Yeonhwa from hitting Su; in fact he pretty much declared, she was his thing person! But I love that he was their point of convergence in that scene.
- Concubine Oh – I am getting major mentor vibes from her. Please could we have a mentor – pupil relationship? Pretty please? She could teach Su all about how to use her badass – ness in a court setting. She can be as strict as she wants but can she also guide Su?
- The Scars have it - clearly the scar reminds Wook of his failure to protect Su. Which is an okay emotion, for him to feel, I guess. Though personally, it’s a freakin battle scar that proves Su is a badass! Plus, I have a feeling he’s going to start feeling even more pathetic as he keeps making promises to protect her and keeps failing at it - which may only add fuel to his quest for power.
For So, it’s a bit of a mix. He may feel he failed to protect her but the scar connects them. It disqualifies them both – but for him it’s the worst thing ever and for her, it’s the one thing that saves her. I wonder whether when he lets her see his scars again, it will be a direct result of her being able to hide her own scar or her being flippant about its existence. Ugh, I love that there is a pay off in the narrative regarding the scar and it’s not just a random plot device!
See, this is the problem. As much as I might rant about the show’s issues, the stuff I like about this show, I freakin adore!!!
Editing my feelings for this show...
As I understand it, there are at least two versions of the same episode –
- the original version which is airing in China and is getting officially subbed internationally; and
- the re-edited Korean version.
Which one should I follow?
Here’s the thing – there are differences and I think they can definitely change the way you look at a scene!
In the Korean version of the Wook grieving scene - we fade out right after he pushes IU away and starts crying piteously. She only looks at him sadly. The same scene in the international version ends with IU comforting Wook – he’s crying piteously in her arms.
If you were intensely in the shipping game, you could milk entire blog posts on tiny details like that!
Again, the scene towards the end, where IU is thinking of which of the princes will become the feared king –
- in the Korean version, she looks at both Wook and So;
- but in the International version, she only looks at Wook.
Doesn’t that matter ? Because wouldn’t her suspicions govern her actions?
Plus, that scene where So defends Baek Ah in front of Yo which you only find in the Korean version. Clearly, its cut footage from some earlier episode that was added to show why Baek Ah was later on in the episode comfortable literally dragging So along to help Su.
But see, I watched the international version first, so while the princes all converging on So to ask for help was sudden, I just rationalised it thinking that when it comes to pulling off a crazy stunt to save Su, they knew only So could do it. Yay for the princes putting aside their differences to save Su!
I know these are small details; maybe it won’t affect the overall story but I am pretty sure that the production team knows that fans invest time and emotion into details like that! It’s the little things apart from the big sweeping moments that really make fans intensly love a show .
And really, it doesn’t matter which version I watched, I was disappointed with the way they showed the origin story for Baek Ah – Su Friendship. I want this friendship to be epic! But setting up the friendship through flashback seems shoehorned in!
Basically, all the editing choices hurt my head and heart!
Sigh, the thing is I really love this show but I am not going to trust it. Does that even make sense? :P It’s like I am going to try and cut down on my expectations from this show, so that if it fails to deliver on its potential, I am not going to end up bitter! :D I am saving my heart from potential show heartbreak!!
current aesthetic: baby princes going to So for help.
