Ultimately the most efficient thing you can do to fight pseudoscientific, “alternative” medicine and quackery is to realize that a lot of people turn to it because they have been constantly misdiagnosed, dismissed, ridiculed and abused by actual doctors and healthcare professionals, and what alternative medicines actually provide is a seemingly compassionate environment were they feel heard, validated and respected. As long as people with chronic pain, for example, are told by doctors for years that they’re liars and fakers, there’s a good chance they’ll be tempted to look for something else: in one case they get no efficient medical treatment and are treated horribly, in the other they get no efficient medical treatment and are listened to and told their pain is real. As long as doctors continue to behave like this they’re in no position to criticize how gullible people are.

slurs are not a distinct and discrete category of words that we should treat with the same impact, reclaimability, usage, offensiveness etc. and we should treat each “slur” or even just any word intended to marginalize certain groups differently because they are all contextually different and mean different things.

as a white person, i would never under any circumstances say the N-Word and i expect other white people to never do so either, even if i was seriously asked what it stood for i’d probably spell it or maybe write it down, but as an autistic woman, i wouldn’t really care if i heard a neurotypical person say something like “yo, you can’t say the word retarded any more”

there’s a reason that we say “The N-Word” and not “The R-Word” for retard or “The D-Word” for dyke; i’ve seen people use the terms R-Slur/D-slur and i’ve occasionally used them myself but i don’t think it’s as simple and clear-cut as that; it is not THE r-word, it’s an absurdly offensive word that begins with R.

although i think bi women probably shouldn’t identify as “dykes” because of its history with the lesbian community (although i have mixed feelings about this!), this doesn’t mean i think a bi woman is horrifically lesbophobic if she uses the word in passing, talks about being called one, quotes somebody else who was using it as an identity label – i think as long as she never ever calls anybody a dyke without knowing it’s an okay to call the receiver, i think there aren’t that many times i’d have a problem with her using the word, and even if i DID, i wouldn’t make a fuss about it in casual conversation – the N-Word, for example, is not like this at all. white people should be ready to like, drop contact with other white people if they find out they use this word.

i’m not saying slurs aren’t important to other communities, at all, like i said, particularly words like “faggot” and “tranny” are pretty much only used horrifically maliciously, but this idea that “cis wlw cant say faggot bc it means gay men” or “trans men cant say tranny bc it means trans woman” is ridiculous, because regardless of intention, these are integral parts of their oppression

of course, this doesn’t mean free reign. if a trans guy even affectionately called me, a trans woman, a tranny in a “reclaiming” way i’d probably punch him or at least be incredibly angry, and i’m pretty darn uncomfortable by trans men who call themselves a tranny ironically or in reclamation, because i think the word isn’t/shouldn’t be for them – the point i’m trying to make is that generalised rules about slurs don’t work, and acting trans men are bigots for saying things like “i got called a tranny today ):” or acting like bi women are bigots for saying things like “oooh i bought these really dykey boots that i can’t wait to woo hot girls with” is faux-progressivism for Woke Points at its finest.

i also think that whilst i cannot be anybody to tell anybody of specific groups how they identify, but we shouldn’t act like all slurs are reclaimable. no matter how much somebody jokingly/ironically refers to themselves as a faggot, it’s not something we should act like isn’t a horrifically abusive, degrading and violent word in pretty much every place in the world right now. likewise for words like shemale, retard etc. additionally, most “reclaimed” slurs aren’t even reclaimed. there is a notable linguistic difference and even pronunciation between The N-Word and its friendlier variant that american black folks often reclaim – and it’s still something that white people (or, indeed, any non-black people) shouldn’t say regardless of if it has the hard R or not

tl;dr: not every slur is the N-Word, each slur should be treated individually taking historical usage, cultural context, community colloquialisms etc. into account, and right now we’re not doing this, we (especially white LGBT/disabled people, imho, and i am both of these groups) are treating every slur like the N-Word and every reclamation of a slur like the Soft-R N-Word, which is not only silly and useless, but disgustingly self-centred, because you will struggle to find a single slur that has the historical usage of the N-Word, i.e, literally invented to dehumanize a class of people that were literally the property of another class of people
