The testing of the color changing crystal runes

What Native people say about the use of sage: you can use sage, but you cannot smudge as nothing you are doing (waving sage around) is actually smudging. Smudging is a ceremony and you are, we promise, not smudging. Please buy sage from either us, or someone who sources the sage from us. White sage may not be considered endangered by the US government but corperate sourcing is making it difficult for us to source sage for our own religious purposes. Let alone to sell it.

What white people hear: never use sage ever, don’t ever buy it, don’t own it, don’t even look at it.

Look, y’all. There’s a couple of facets to my talk today.

1) Yes! You can buy sage! You really, truly can! Buy it from either native sellers (go to a powwow! Eat our food, buy our stuff, watch some dancing!) Or buy it from a seller who sources the sage from native people. Pick one. And no, buying it from 5 Below doesn’t count.

2) you CANNOT smudge. This isn’t just you “shouldn’t”— this is a YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF SMUDGING. Waving a sage stick around your doorways IS NOT SMUDGING. It is smoke clensing. Smudging, depending on the tradition and tribe, could easily have dancing and drums involved. You, as a white person, do not have the cultural BACKGROUND to even know how it works. At all. Period.

3) please, for FUCKS SAKE, stop making posts here on tumblr where you tell other white people about cultural appropriation and what they can and cannot do. Please stop, your license has been revoked because none of you bother to get the facts right. We native people are FULLY CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES. Consider instead: a) reblogging our posts where we talk about it! We’re here! We have made posts!! b) Making a post that states what we said and then LINKS BACK TO US. Screenshot with a link if you must. Stop centering your own voices in these conversations. You are already centered in everything, stop centering yourselves in a native space.

I’m not arguing or anything, I’m just a little confused, but- can you explain to me why white people are incapable of smudging? My family is all white but we’ve used sage for smudging as far back as I can remember- but I always thought that was a pagan thing, so now I’m confused. Again, I’m not trying to argue- I’m just confused because I thought this was a paganism thing, not a culture thing.

Smudging is not the same thing as smoke cleansing.

Smudging is a sacred ritual with far more detail to it, and is a thing done exclusively by native people who often have been trained to do so. Many people I know have been exclusively trained by elders on how to do it. (For reference, I really don’t even know how, and I am a native person who has watched it been done many times.)

Non-native people cannot smudge because they don’t even usually know what smudging IS, let alone how to do it. They don’t have the needed cultural background to know.

It’s like asking if a non-Christian can meaningfully bless a mass with a thurible. (AKA a censer, one of these:)

They’re used in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Lutheran services, usually by a priest or minister.

So, could someone who is not Christian lead a mass? Give a blessing? Perhaps most similar to why white people want a smudging, perform an exorcism?

Or would that be just meaningless playacting? If you believe in any of the spiritual backing to these belief systems, yes. It would. And playacting at the rituals of a culture the oppression of whom your (very recent!) ancestors directly benefitted from IS DEEPLY AND OBVIOUSLY DISRESPECTFUL.

So, fellow white people: don’t pretend you can smudge.

Horg

“þeir er hǫrg ok hof hátimbroðo” “Shrines and temples they timbered high” - Völuspá

A horg (Old Norse “hǫrgr”) is a sacrificial site or a form of altar in pre-Christian times in the Nordic countries and which roughly refers to a "stone pile".

In the poem Hyndluljóð, the goddess Frøya (Freyja) speaks favorably of Ottar (Óttar) for having worshiped her so faithfully by using a horg. Frøya details that the horg is constructed of a heap of stones and that Ottar often reddened these stones with sacrificial blood in dedication to her. Snorre Sturlason states that the horg is used in the veneration of the Åsynjene (female gods).

In the poem Vafþrúðnismál, it is also stated that many a horg and hov were dedicated to Njord (Njörðr).

A horg is considered different to a hov (from the Old Norse hof), commonly called a “temple”. A rough simplification is that horg were for outdoor rituals and hov for indoors worship.

Many modern day heathens within Scandinavia continue to use a stone set as a focal point for rituals conducted outdoors to this day.

We are on the brink of homelessness

My best friend and i got notified we must pay more than 600 euro in deposit by january, she struggled a lot in her lifetime and went thru a lot to get this appartment. There is a huge housing crisis in Amsterdam and greedy landlords who take advantage of it. Our landlord is threathening to kick us out if we dont pay in time, this would be a crisis for the both of us who are already living paycheck to paycheck and hustling in this city to make ends meet and both of us cant count on any support from our families. please we really need help.

Walking With Thor

So I don't know if anyone else has experienced this feeling but sometimes I know Thor's walking with me more prominently.

When its a winter evening and the lights are blurry because you're tired from working and the wind is almost circling you. Its not a warm breeze by any means but it's comfortable. It brushes your cheek and ruffles your hair and its like he's right beside you with a hand on your back.

The wind blows a spring into your step and your mouth widens into a smile and you just know its him.

Not to hijack your post or anything but it's super interesting you describe this because it is legit exactly how I felt when I was going to college and had to walk between the buildings in the winter time. I felt Thor with me just in this way.
