Potentially Evil, Potentially Good, Too I Suppose

One more positive thought about the Good Omens finale. Maybe a new perspective. Spoilers after the cut:

The more I think about the finale, the more convinced I am that the biggest reveal was not Aziraphale and Crowley choosing a new universe.

It was their decision to choose our universe.

Because Good Omens was never really set in our world. Soho always felt slightly unreal. Berwick Street became “Whickber Street.” History behaved strangely. Even London itself seemed softened around the edges, suspended, out of time somehow, curated rather than lived in.

And the finale finally explains why.

Their Earth really was only six thousand years old.

Young, in cosmic terms. Constructed. A reality actively governed by Heaven and Hell, shaped by rigid systems, binaries and assigned roles. Angel or demon. Good or evil. Obedience or rebellion. A controlled world.

And that is what Aziraphale and Crowley ultimately let go. This is not our universe already collapsing around them. It's theirs. They let it go for a reality not ruled from above.

That’s why the final human scenes matter so much. For the first time, the world suddenly feels real. Older. Authentic. Even the bookshop no longer looks like a mythical little pocket outside reality, but like an actual shop on an actual street in an actual city.

It is finally our world. Messy. Human. Uncertain. Free.

And because this new universe is no longer locked into Heaven and Hell’s rules, it opens the door to larger and stranger ideas: reincarnation, soulmates, souls finding each other across time and circumstance.

Honestly, I am convinced that if we had gotten a full third season instead of a single film, we would have seen exactly that.

Not just Crowley and Aziraphale as two nice middle-aged men, but fragments of them everywhere. Two women in one century. Two men in another. Lovers, strangers, rivals, spouses - every possible gender and version of humanity unfolding across history.

Different faces. Different lives. Same souls. The same impossible gravity pulling them together again and again.

Human now, yes. Fragile. Bound by time like the rest of us.

But still ineffable.

And honestly? I think that is far more romantic than eternity.

It was an honour and a privilege to have been a part of this beautiful fandom.

I’m sobbing so hard I can’t breathe. It was a beautiful ending - as we predicted, not exactly what we’d have hoped for for our ineffables - but it was beautiful, and right, painful in all the ways I like it, and just extremely Terry Pratchett.

My health has been unstable, and now I fear my mental health will join it 😆 I have never been very good at endings…

And, if you think about it, Crowley and Aziraphale are really the fathers of humans. Crowley is the one who tempted them, leading them into sin, and Aziraphale gave them the sword to protect them. There would have been nothing if they had not have done that. They created humans as they are, it only makes sense that they would sacrifice themselves for humankind, that’s their children. They did more for the creation of humans as they are than anyone else besides god, who for the most part just created them. Most of the biblical divine interventions seem to have been led/attended by at lease one of the two, or at least influenced by them.

Being the (figurative) first humans (the first morally grey, sinning people at least) it makes sense as to why they would become fully human, if that is what happened, as a way for God to almost thank them. for all that they sacrificed for humans to live the way humans do, the way that crowley and aziraphale always wanted to, but never had a chance. And thank them for the end(less) amusement and predictability their pining provided.

Honestly I think that the ending of good omens is perfect. Throughout the millennia that crowley and Aziraphale existed, they were undeniably human. They were neither good nor bad, just a little bit selfish, and clearly comitted all of the so called “sins.” The only thing they were missing was being mortal. It makes sense as to why they would sacrifice themselves for humanity, I mean they’d pretty much already done it in s1, and regardless of whether or not you think that the humans in the ending are them, I don’t think anyone can deny that being human is what they actually wanted. They hated the idea of eternity, for the most part, they didn’t want to see the bird fly FORVER.

All they ever wanted was to settle down together, and be unbothered by heaven or hell. They got that in the end, and even more because they really are unbound. Whether or not they remember their thousands of years together, or if it’s really them, I think the ending is showing who they wanted to be. We got an “I love you” just not outright, and that’s okay. It was ineffable.

arguably one of my absolute favourite most bone chilling, heart crushing moments in the lotr movies was when they were in lothlorien and boromir was confessing to aragorn. he was so filled with grief and shame and anxiety (and anger), knowing he had a duty to fill for his father and by extension, the people of gondor (feeling as though he was failing), while also rapidly succumbing to the pull of the ring, and not even fully realising that his motivation is driving him into ruin and curse. and then he goes and says "there is hope left, but i cannot see it" foreshadowing his own death in the most subtle of ways and honestly i think about this scene too many times because same. i, too, am only man.

Gimli fell in love with Legolas with all the force of a hammer on an anvil at the exact moment Legolas said: "You would die before your stroke fell!" to Eomer.

How very depressing that Neil Gaiman had trended not even a tiny bit for demonstrating what a fucking horrific person he is.

As a reminder, he's suing Caroline Wallner, one of his accusers, for breaking her NDA. Not for libel. He's saying she shouldn't have told anyone about it, not that she lied.

He is no friend to women, to the LGBTQIA+ community, to anyone quite frankly unless he thinks they are of value to him.

Share the story. Put it on Facebook and bluesky and whatever else you're on. Make it clear what a horrifying person he is. Tell your friends. He's paying Edendale a fortune to try and cover this up. Make this hard for him. Make it cost him money.

anyone else remember being like 13 years old and watching that scene in how to train your dragon (2010) where hiccup carefully navigates the maze of lines toothless has drawn between them without breaking or stepping on any of them and with his back to toothless and eyes shut to demonstrate how he’s willing to put total faith in him not to harm him or run away and to show humility and a desire to establish a natural bond of mutual trust instead of the arrogance to try to force toothless to submit to his will and hearing the music crescendo and fade into silence as he finally crosses the last obstacle so that they’re standing mere inches from one another, tension built on years of bad blood between their two races, so immense it’s almost like a physical barrier, separating them, and after what feels like forever toothless presses his nose gently into hiccup’s outstretched palm and it fits perfectly like it was made solely for that specific purpose, and feeling all the hairs on your neck stand up and a stifling sensation that brought actual tears to your eyes rise in your throat as it touched something profound and full of unspeakable yearning inside you

love this emerging genre of doctor who episode where you think it’s a surface level commentary on one topic (social media; ai), but then the rug gets pulled out from underneath you and it’s actually a more severe social commentary (racism; misogyny/incel culture), BUT THEN it’s actually a pretty adept illustration of how the first and second topics are part of the same problem (social media allows people to create echo chambers which reinforce racism and fear mongering to the point of denying their own lived reality; ai masks human biases as technological progress and exacerbates regressive movements like incel culture)
