I watched Good Omens Season 3.

It was very fun.

I think the Good Omens 3 ending is as messed up as it is because it's a Neil Gaiman twist on a Terry Pratchett ending.

I think theres a lot to be said about that. Because Neil tried to make it edgy. And it didnt fuckin land the way he hoped because ultimately, it's a Terry story.

I know a lot of the fandom is in disbelief that maybe that ending was indeed what Terry wanted. And I dont think thats wrong. We WERE fucked over by Neil Ga*man. And this is why there are parts of the finale that I choose to dismiss and rewrite in my head and within fanfiction. Because this story became something sad. Something depressing. A story of martyrdom instead of love. Oppression defeating the ultimate protest (love).

Ga*man went down the route of self sacrifice. Pratchett's writing, in my personal opinion, likely wouldve provided a much more optimistic approach. Perhaps their memories remain. Perhaps they still live off somewhere in alpha centuri drinking cocktails watching their human forms live a peaceful life. Literally anything but the nihilistic ending that we got at the hands of Ga*man

Terry was a political satiricalist which is something that is so incredibly prominent within the Good Omens book. The idea that was presented at the end of go3 that the only way to be truly free from the threats and violence of your oppressors is to essentially commit suicide seems.. off brand to say the least.

This can even be argued without any other familiarity with Terry's works. Look at the ending of the book, and the end of the series. Terry wrote most of that and it was SO optimistic. Aziraphale and Crowley, the couple that completely transcend the division between heaven and hell were FINE. So why would he then go on to write a second book where they weren't fine? Especially to such a drastically sad degree. Sure theres references in the show to "Oh this is all fine for now until the REALLY big one, the second coming foreshadowing blah blah blah" but it just doesn't seem entirely RIGHT. Something is most definitely off about it, all things considered.

This post absolutely isn't hate in any way to any of the wonderful writers, cast, and crew (apart from Ga*man, FUCK that guy) because they all did such a fantastic job with the time they were given purely just out of love for the story, this is more so intended to be a big fat fuck you to Ga*man and his shitty writing.

I could talk a lot about him and his shitty writing. Especially the way crowley was written in go3. ESPECIALLY the way literally everybody treated Aziraphale from the final 15 all the way up to the end of his EXISTENCE. Oh I can TALK.

I'm engaging with plenty of GO 3 fix-its and even writing at least one of my own (and possibly several), but I can't reject Asa and Anthony. In my opinion, at best, they are literal reincarnations. Also in my opinion, at worst, they are an extension of the same story, in defiance of God's comment that a story doesn't have to continue past its last page. In any case, I liked them right away. They are comfortable, and I want to peek into their lives more, and if I try to refrain from folding them into my heart with Crowley and Aziraphale out of some sense of narrative obligation, I will go actually genuinely for real even further off the deep end.

I also think we're experiencing conflict over some concepts that are genuinely baffling to the most brilliant philosophers of all time (I'm thinking especially of the concepts of free will and personal identity). Fandom is not going to resolve these issues in a definitive way, so as in my everyday life, leaning into things I love (in this case, it's characters and moments both old and new) feels like the only way to actually move forward.

I'm using a lot of "I" and "I feel" and "my opinion" to drive home that this isn't supposed to be a complaint about you, reader, just an expression of where I'm at in all this tension after I've been silent for a long time.

Apparently I'm in the minority when I say that I like the Good Omens ending. Was it a perfect ending? Absolutely not. But here's the thing.

They got what they wanted. They wanted humanity to have joy more than anything. They came to that decision together. It was finally what they both wanted. They love each other and they love humanity, and those concepts aren't totally separate. It wasn't about giving each other up, it was about their individual and mutual decision that Earth was worth it.

Asa and Anthony are not Aziraphale and Crowley, but they are proof that their decision was worthwhile.
