Beldaruit loves big, showy magic. He enjoys magic that inspires wonder— still maintains a childish sense of joy even in his old age.

Meanwhile, Qifrey teaches Coco of a "gentler sort of magic", after giving her the rundown on what sorts of magic are forbidden. To me, this feels exactly like the sort of thing Beldaruit would say.

Imagine Qifrey quoting Beldaruit to Coco. Not even quite realizing what he's doing it. She's just so much like him, he slips into Beldaruit's shoes even more with her than the other apprentices.

But she's different from him. Untouched by the silverwood. Softness can't hurt her the way it can hurt him. Same goes for all four of his girls.

Qifrey would not isolate himself from Beldaruit if it was an issue of discomfort. The silverwood impacts every single one of his decisions, and the decision of where to live was most definitely included in that.

To me, Qifrey's estrangement from Beldaruit is twofold.

Bel too good of a mentor. He is observant, kindc passionate and eager to teach. All traits that qifrey shares; all traits that would be extremely useful and good with any student that's not a silverwood host.

Beldaruit would almost definitely figure it out simultaneously to Olruggio. Anyone at the great hall might. And then Qifrey would have to erase their memory, and he'd hate that.

So he fled the great hall to avoid hurting anyone, especially the man who raised him.

I’m endlessly happy that he did end up with Alaira because she is beyond qualified for teaching and taking care of Euini but I still wonder

Beldaruit has a habit of taking in apprentices who have been victims of abuse or other traumatic experiences. He's been shown to be really fond of children and maybe he feels a personal responsibility to help them as a Wise in Teachings.

What's funny is that Qifrey seems to be taking after his master in that regard. The habit of taking in students who are view by others as a difficult cases and helping them. Just as Beldaruit had helped him all those years ago.

My headcanon is that Olruggio off handedly made the comparison or mention something about it and Qifrey stared at him for a second before putting his head in his hands and mumble “oh no… I’ve become Beldaruit…” in the same way that someone realizes that they are way more like their parents than they previously thought

it's canon that he was an active experiment- yeah? -> like, he was purposefully put in different situations to either distress him or make him feel safe so that the extents of being a silverwood host could be studied. and those studies were written down somewhere

i'm not sure Qifrey was ever genuinely 'rescued' from the Brims

Lestisse was monitoring how Custas took to his roots, that's also canon and it's how they knew what was going on when the tree receded -> following this logic, Ininia is also being monitored- though she seems to be the only one that was ever actively aware of it

with how often the Brims love to hurt and terrorize Qifrey... I think one of 'em might genuinely be monitoring him too in some way- perhaps through his stolen eye

i don't think he ever truly stopped being their original experiment

Olruggio being Qifrey's Watchful Eye although the two are close friends seems irresponsible. Who even allowed it?

Taking in an Outsider as a apprentice is really rare. I wonder who gave Qifrey permission to take Coco in in the first place?

it is thinking about qifrey and beldaruit hours and specifically i am thinking about how you develop a bunch of odd little habits as a child with a caretaker who uses a wheelchair and there are quite a few of those that are not really applicable to the sealchair and of those that remain the majority are not really applicable to qifrey because of his dislike of touching, but i can think of one that still is so imagine if you will: baby qifrey walking around the great hall holding onto the horn of beldaruit's chair so that he doesn't end up separated. he refuses to hear any comment on this and equally refuses to let go unless it's to run off and hang out with olly.

@not-that-cosmic-horror good news: it is a very persistent habit! at least it is for me lol, i've been an independent adult for like five years and i still do it automatically

it extends to other types of seats too. any time i'm with someone who i've got that vibe of relationship with i default to hovering behind or beside them with my hand on the nearest surface of their chair/couch/bed/whatever, so do with that what you will :))
