Big fan of the fact that, in Frankenstein 2025, Victor did not run from his monster because he was "too grotesque" like in the original novel. The film established that Victor is very comfortable with the grotesque. He's not disconcerted by it, which makes sense. He's building a man out of dead men's body parts. Why would he suddenly be shocked at its appearance?

I love that what GDT did instead. Victor was not afraid of the grotesqueness of life, but the responsibility of it.

You made life, and it's no more than a baby. You must now raise it and nurture it and teach it and love it, and THAT was what was too much for Victor.

Just a really awesome change that worked REALLY well.

ok but this is very much the subtext of the book. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein fresh off of the death of a baby she carried to term and the postpartum/grief that came with that, followed by a miscarriage, on the whims of her friend Byron who was too opium high to give a shit that maybe the only woman invited to his big escape from societal scrutiny didn't feel like joining in on his creative writing exercise. the entire first third of the book is underlined with a question: what if a man found himself in the same position as countless women, pursuing the act of creating life with a fervor and passion to be expected of someone capable of performing miracles, only to realize the second after birth that the miracle doesn't make them whole? that they are still human and wanting and now, on top of it all, they are solely responsible for the well being of this thing that they were given to believe would be their life's purpose, whether they still want to fulfill that purpose or not? except the difference is that victor can and does walk away. he does abandon his creation, a luxury that was not afforded to women of the era.

idk i haven't seen the new movie, i'm sure GDT expands on these themes in a novel and interesting way, he just certainly isn't adding something that the original novel lacked. it's all baked in there by a woman who knew too well how heavy these responsibilities weighed.
