HIGH SCHOOLERS âŒïžâŒïž COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS OKAY!!
Please donât ever let anyone shame you for attending.
the thing about everything is that it all gets easier with practice, so be careful what you practiceÂ
Quick reminder, especially for you younger undergrads: Discipline is a skill, not a character trait. And just like any skill, it can be practiced and improved upon incrementally. Try not to get discouraged if you have a day, or multiple days, where you are less disciplined than you would like or need to be. Donât quit. Donât spend the next week binging Netflix because you think itâs a hopeless endeavour. Just get up the next day and try again. Each day you try is more practice, and each day you practice, youâll get a little bit better, and that continual improvement will pay dividends in the long run.
Keep at it.
I admire disciplined people so much. I admire people who can do what they need to do with a focused mind and unwavering commitment, not letting themselves get distracted and refusing to make excuses for themselves. I admire the kind of people whose eyes are on the prize, even if itâs far away, and who are determined, diligent and adaptive. I look up to the kind of people who refuse to succumb to any obstacle or challenge and transcend above the millions of things that stood against them and their goals. I admire those kind of people so much and I aspire to be like that so much more.
the main piece of advice i have for students is this: learn how to fail and persevere. it is a skill that will help you in life far more than perfect grades. think of failure impersonally. when you fail, you have just eliminated one method that doesnât work for you, so you need to try a different method in the future. figure out which factors contributed to the undesirable result, and change them. (teachers, advisors, and academic counselors can help you with this if you arenât sure where to start). i know from personal experience that fear of failure is often a self-fulfilling prophecy, because it leads to self-sabotage. if you can learn not to think of it as an inherent personal flaw, but rather as a strategy that didnât work for you and can be changed, you will be well-equipped to face the inevitable failures and rejections that are part of life.

some recent machines notes! weâre learning about induction motors right now and itâs a lot of math, ahh
I spent all of my Sunday researching for my paper on Platoâs The Republic and Democracy. I had at first wanted to write about Cyberpunk being the anti-citizen in Platoâs The Republic and modernizing everything from the Allegory of the Cave to the Ring of Gyges but itâs an awesome topic that will require way more than my four page requirement so Iâm going to try and write it up this summer. Iâm determined to take a short summer break and this would be an awesome way of putting it to use. Anyway, today Iâve gotta write my paper so wish me luck!Â
Since once in a blue moon I actually discover a decent rule for adulting, and since I know I have followers a few years younger than me who are just entering the workforce, I want to tell you about a very important phrase.Â
âI wonât be available.â
Imagine youâre at work and your boss asks you to come in on Saturday. Saturday is usually your day offâcoming in Saturdays is not an obligation to keep your job. Maybe you were going to watch a movie with a friend, or maybe you were just going to lie in bed and eat ice cream for eight hours, but either way you really, really donât want to give up your day off.
If you consider yourself a millennial youâve probably been raised to believe you need to justify not being constantly at work. And if youâre a gen-Z kid youâre likely getting the same toxic messages that we did. So in a situation like that, you might be inclined to do one of three things:
Tell your boss youâd rather not give up your day off. Cave when they pressure you to come in anyway, since youâre not doing anything important.
Tell your boss youâd rather not give up your day off. Over-apologize and worry that you looked bad/unprofessional.
Lie and say youâve got a doctorâs appointment or some other activity that feels like an adequate justification for not working.
The fact is, it doesnât matter to your boss whether youâre having open heart surgery or watching anime in your underwear on Saturday. The only thing that affects them is the fact that you wonât be at work. So telling them why you wonât be at work only gives them reason to try and pressure you to come in anyway.
If you say âI wonât be available,â giving no further information, youâd be surprised how often thatâs enough. Be polite and sympathetic in your tone, maybe even say âsorry, but I wonât be available.â But donât make an excuse. If your boss is a professional individual, theyâll accept that as a ânoâ and try to find someone else.Â
But bosses arenât always professional. Sometimes theyâre whiny little tyrants. So, what if they pressure you further? The answer isâpolitely and sympathetically give them no further information.
âAre you sure youâre not available?â âSorry, but yes.â
âWhy wonât you be available?â âI have a prior commitment.â (Which you do, even if itâs only to yourself.)
âWhatâs your prior commitment?â âSorry, but thatâs kind of personal.â
âCan you reschedule it?â âIâm afraid not. Maybe someone else can come in?â
If you donât give them anything to work with, they canât pressure you into going beyond your obligations as an employee. And when they realize that, theyâll also realize they have to find someone else to come in and move on.
me @ myself: bish you need to practice

If you struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or just plain feeling like a failure, I have a mantra for you thatâs been really helping me out lately:
Just show up.
I used to skip class because the whole thing was so overwhelming: I had to get dressed in something clean even though I never had the energy to do laundry, walk to school, sit in class for up to three hours, plus pay attention, take notes, and participate in discussion. In reality, I was being a perfectionist, and life would have been a lot easier for me if I had Just Shown Up. By staying home because of my depression and anxiety, I wasnât giving myself the chance to do any of that. I was such a perfectionist that being a âbadâ or average student was unthinkable, so I stopped being a student at all.
If youâre having trouble getting something done, Just Show Up. You donât have to be employee of the month. You donât have to be valedictorian. Just Show Up.
ime it also helps to be like âyou dont have to stay the whole time, you just have to goâ bc most of the time once youre there itâs fine. a lot of things are like that, like⊠you dont have to finish the dishes, just start them. a lot of the time once you start a task itâs easier to finish than to stop, especially if you can trick yourself like âafter five more minutes if i still feel bad iâll go homeâ or âafter washing two more dishes i can stop for todayâ
even if you donât finish the task, you started it, and by completing part of it you lessened your future workload and ALSO taught your brain that things may not be as daunting as they seem
This is wisdom! Peace!
you know what years of therapy taught me - Redefine success
so what if no one else gets how the things you define as successes are victories because you have to
so you got to work - success
you used public transport - success
you went to the supermarket instead of ordering online and didnât just buy things you dindât want because you got scared - MASSIVE success
Redefine success, your body moved the goal posts, there is no shame in acknwoledging that
This may not help other people the way it helps me, so take it or leave it as needed, but: A lot of the time, Big Epic Awesome Things are built up out of little tiny just showing up, too.

There is never enough funding. I donât care if you attend Julliard or your local community college. Your program will not have enough funding. The funding will be going to building a new Alumni Center. The new Alumni Center will be very nice, in order to convince the Alumni to donate money to pay for the new Alumni Center. No one has ever actually seen an Alumni. Sometimes people leave, and are said to have become one - you donât think youâd like that.
At least six classrooms will still have chalkboards and desks from the local middle school, because they felt bad.
There are always too many classes. Youâll talk to a friend in another department. They have four classes and fifteen credits. âItâs so much work!â theyâll cry. You wonât understand. Thatâs not enough credits to graduate on time - full-time class loads for your department have at least 18 credits, and 9 classes. In fact, youâre in class right now. How did you find someone from another department? Does your school even offer other majors? You canât remember.
There is never enough time. Youâre late for something. Your online class had two papers due last Sunday, that you wrote during your 8 am. By the end of your 8 am, you had missed a third deadline and youâre rushing to a rehearsal. You have two classes that are literally at the same time. The professors told you to make it work. You havenât met either yet, in the third week of semester. Or the eighth? Somehow, in nine classes, you have 70 hours of homework.
Your roommate doesnât realize that they have a roommate. Do you even have a room? Thereâs a bed that you sleep on sometimes, but with the hours you spend there, you may not be its only inhabitant. You mostly sleep in practice rooms.
Youâre late for something.
Iâm not even a music major yet and this is painfully relatable
The Study Buddies Project
The Basics:
How does it work?Â
You simply fill out this form, I get the information and pair you with a studyblr I thin youâd get along with based on what youâve told me. Then, you get a message from me letting you know who your buddy is.Â
Why?
Sometimes itâs hard to talk to people. This way, not only is your buddy expecting you but you also know they want to talk to you and become friends. I hope to build lasting relationships where fellow studyblrs can help, advise, support and encourage each other.
How are buddies assigned? What if I donât get along with my buddy?
I look at hobbies, interests, likes and dislikes, field of study and age as well as the âWhat You Wantâ section and find compatible matches. If you guys donât click though, you can always apply again to get a new buddy.Â
Is this only for studyblrs?
No, this is aimed at studyblrs but even if youâre not one you can apply. Please note that there is an option for studyblrs to choose to only be paired with studyblrs. This is because I know some study blogs only follow other studyblogs, etc.
Sounds good! how do I join?
Easy! Just reblog this post and complete the form here and Iâll contact you once the pairing has been done.
*PLEASE NOTE: The pairing process will begin on Monday the 19th of February and will be ongoing from then on
To be fluent or proficient in a language, you must conquer the ego that tells you that you can or should know everything there is to know about any language in zero time with zero effort.
But the most freeing thing about learning a language is understanding that all your mistakes and things that you donât know all at once are incredibly natural, expected, and in no way make you an idiot or a failure.
