Development files for Yoshi’s Island contain graphics for an early version of Baby Bowser’s final boss form. Like in the finished game, he was intended to approach Yoshi from the background of the arena. Here is a still image of the design and a mock-up of his animation as he would approach Yoshi.

i love how vague all the creatures can be in minecraft thanks to the pixel art and cuboid bodies. like, take the strider. is it scaly? smooth? rough? what is its face shaped like? are those white strands hairs? catfish-style whiskers? feathers? face-latching parasites?

are ghasts like jellyfish? squid? something else? is a ravager’s face like that of cattle? or is it more humanoid? do endermites have legs? do they squirm around like slugs? can they bite you?

and of course the blaze. what in the world IS it? we at least know that the rods floating around it are indeed just rods. but what of the head? is it a face? a skull? a statue? we just don’t know! i love it!

those eyes hold the depth of a blinding sunset. they are never seen and meet no other gaze.

mere glances in the direction of this tall figure are hesitant and hasty, for fear of being seen by those eyes. being seen by those eyes and hearing their calm, quiet murmurs grow to be deafeningly loud, devouring their muse.

those eyes attached to the being that picks their way lazily through my posessions, selecting a single item to toy with in their palms. always moving just out of reach, there is no recovery.

but then i remember those eyes, that gaze so many avoid being seen by. those eyes that don't want to be seen either.

so i raise my shield

and lift my gaze
