So like. I know Australia is kind of known for bushfires - it barely ranks on a global scale, like how California was when it was burning - but as it is this is some of the worst fires we’ve seen. The entire east coast, from about two hours up from Sydney, until Brisbane, is spotted with wild bushfires. Several people have died, and more are unaccounted for. Over 150 homes have been lost so far, and that’s not even taking into account the animals, both native and domestic, that would have lost their lives.
The weather is going to be worse on Tuesday, and our fire service is so overburdened that they had to announce that on Tuesday, as it grows worse, people will have to rely on themselves as best as they can because odds are, help won’t be coming. With too many fires there’s just no possible way of controlling all of them. This weekend it broke the record for the number of emergency level fires at a single time -52 in NSW alone.
Rainforests are burning in northern NSW and Queensland, and I can’t imagine the amount of heritage sites being lost in this catastrophic event.
I’m not even saying all this for anything. It’s just really scary, and as someone that lives in a high risk area - 36 acres (a lot basically) of forest - this kind of shit is terrifying.
Yes, Australia faces bushfires. But never this bad. The weather is changing, it’s getting hotter and hotter. Climate scientists have linked the late end on the monsoon season in India (October, where it usually ends in September) to the severe lack of rain in Australia at this time of year. With the drought, the land is so dry that there was almost no chance of the fire not spreading once it began.
It’s not even summer yet.
Climate change is real, and it’s happening, whether we like it or not. And our government would much rather still invest in coal than try and make a difference. Fuck you Scott Morrison - hope all that coal keeps you fucking warm.
It goes further up than just Brisbane. There’s been over 50 bushfires in both NSW and QLD this weekend, for over 100 total. Places on the Sunshine Coast had to be evacuated. There’s fires near Bundaberg, Kingaroy, a whole bunch near Rockhampton and Yeppoon, Mackay and up in the Atherton tablelands near cairns.
There are other posts around with images of the NSW fire map, but I hadn’t seen one with the QLD map so here it is.
I’ve never seen anything like this and it honestly terrifies me.
Thank you for this addition. The simple fact is that there’s so many updates it’s almost impossible to keep track. Every time I check the RFS (rural fire service) website ‘fires near me’ map, I anxiously await to see where it’s spread in the hour or so since I last checked.
So update. There are now approximately 70 fires burning, and for the first time ever the greater Sydney region has been issued a Catastrophic Fire Danger warning. In fact, the entire state of NSW is under a Catastrophic Fire Warning (or at least as far as I know) and over 300 schools are shut for the next several days. Preparing for tomorrow is almost like preparing for the end of the world- packing bags, your valuables and confirming your fire safety plan so you at least know where you plan to run to if you have to evacuate. Our emergency text alert system has been shut down, as there’d be too many texts to send it’s unsustainable. With service towers also down in areas of fire, people are being told to run as soon as danger appears, and to not bother calling any kind of emergency service as all lines will be busy.
Good luck to everyone, please stay safe and listen to your local radio and stay in contact with the RFS fires near me app or website.
“It is forbidden to be in the playground outside the working hours of the daycare centre.”

ullu.u.ner.a.ni - day.be.[verbal noun].its.[locative case/in] - in its being the day
paaqqin.nit.tar.fi.up - care-for.[half-transitive].[habitual].place-where.[relative-case/of] - of the place where [people] are cared for
amma.sar.ner.ata - open.[habitual].[verbal noun].its-[relative case/of] - of its habitual opening
avata.a.tigut - outside.its.[prosecutive case/through] - during its outside
pinnguar.tar.fim.mi.in.neq - play.[habitual].place-where.[locative case/in].be.[verbal noun] - the act of being in the place where one habitually plays
inerte.qqu.ta.a.voq - ban.ask-sb-to.[passive.noun/thing which is].be.[3p-sing-indicative] - it is a thing which is asked to be forbidden
I’m curious, what does the first word bring into the sentence? To an untrained eye, it seems like every piece is covered by the other five words.
Greenlandic doesn’t have a separate formal class of adverbs, but ulluunerani (during the day) is effectively acting as an adverb, elaborating on the embedded half-transitive verb paaqqinni*- (to care for [people]).
So you could analyse the first two words as:
of-the-place-where-[caring for [people] during the day]-habitually-happens
So by contrast, an “evening care centre” could be expressed with unnuunerani and “night care centre” would be with unnuaanerani.
oooohhhh The word in Quebec French is “Garderie”,(from the same root as “ward”) or “Centre de la petite enfance” (lit. young childhood center) and has no etymological connection to “day” whatsoever, so I didn’t make the connection.
The interesting thing about Greenlandic (after the first 15 years of heavy-going mental effort...) is that once you can recognise the morphemes, Greenlandic words are all almost entirely transparent in meaning. The language has very few loan words, generally choosing to build words of equivalent meaning from purely native roots, to a degree that would possibly even put Icelandic to shame.
We say “English doesn’t make any sense” because saying “English is unusual in that, when it borrows vocabulary from other languages, it tends to partially retain the morphology of the originating language group rather than adapting the word in question to English morphology, which is why we have twelve different ways to construct a plural” takes too long.
you know how mathematicians have the journal of recreational mathematics, right? where they publish stuff like, ‘oh i found this cool property of this one seemingly boring number’, or, ‘this is literally nonsense but it sounds ~scientific~’ and it’s all great fun to read?
well
behold, the journal of recreational linguistics
with such delightful papers as ‘tennis puns’, ‘animals in different languages’, and ‘gifts from a homonymous benefactor’

The very first article I found was by a woman named Katherine called Advice From A Katherpillar. This is my kind of place.
This site is not only full of deliberate disinformation and hoaxes, it’s rife with anti-intellectualism.
I encourage people to research anything that sounds fantastic and totally different than what they were taught - even in my posts.

We’ve got a Prime Minister voted in by less than 0.5% of the population, who once referred to “cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies”, a Foreign Secretary who didn’t realise the Dover-Calais link was important for trade and a Home Secretary who once called for the reintroduction of the death penalty, held dodgy meetings with foreign politicians while lying about being on holiday and who’s generally politically somewhere to the right of Darth Vader but, y’know, we have to focus on those really big priorities...

There’s 180 Days Til Christmas!
Hello! I can't see that you answered my ask so I just want to make sure tumblr didn't eat it. Would you mind adding a gif of Crowley shushing Aziraphale at the airbase to your gif request list? The only version I've seen has Aziraphale's line and I just want Crowley shushing to use as a reaction gif :] thanks for all the awesome work you do with this blog - from the gifing to the posting of article links. You're amazing!
I think tumblr probably ate it :)
Awww, thank you!!!
I already have the gif projects from making the apple tree duty shushing gifset, so I was able to cut it easily, how about this?
Or I could only turn off the subtitles (if what you desire is more complicated drop me another ask and I’ll add it to the request list) :)
Is it possible to save gifs?
There’s 200 Days Til Christmas!
The daily countdown will begin on June 25th to celebrate Half-Christmas!
On a personal note, my granny passed away suddenly in May. Her love of Christmas and the season is one of the biggest parts of why I love Christmas. She made sure we got a new hand made ornament every year. Granny loved setting up Christmas lights outside her farm house even if it meant only her friends and family ever saw them.
One memory that stands out is when I was little and I wanted a Christmas tree in my room. She had a short 3 foot tree, lights, and ornaments that she gave me to use. Those ornaments still go up on my tree every year. She and I went to the store and she bought me a star to go on top of my little tree.
Granny’s favorite Christmas movie was The Polar Express so this year I’ll post from that movie every ten days in her memory. If you have a special memory of a Christmas with your grandmother you’d like to share please drop it in my inbox. As always I take requests for the daily countdown.
Boring, realistic explanation: Male characters in Star Trek: The Original Series are wearing visible eyeshadow in some shots because 1966 was right in the middle of the transition from black-and-white to colour television in America, and TV makeup artists were still adjusting to the fact that stage makeup is easier to see in colour broadcasts.
The truth we know in our hearts: Male characters in Star Trek: The Original Series sometimes wear eyeshadow because the future is fabulous.
Dear girls, be intensely wary of men considerably older than you obsessed with “mentoring” you. They’re most likely trying to groom you. Speaking from experience.
I want to make it clear I’m not just speaking to underage/teen girls. Any younger girl, and this can happen to not that young women as well.
Just because the guy isn’t technically a pedophile, doesn’t make him any less predatory. When you’re in your 20s you may not be a kid anymore, but you’re not fully developed as an adult either. You’re still vulnerable to predators who have the advantage of more experience and thus tools you don’t yet have, in addition to the other advantage of power imbalance due to gendered relations.
A man who wants to be your mentor, especially if he says he wants to “shape” you or anything similar, is a man who’s trying to turn you into his puppet, to make you “develop” (be molded) into the girl/woman that serves his pleasure, even if not directly sexual.
There’s predators who get off on the intellectual performance of the younger female objects of their obsessions. There’s predators who get off on your social development fitting their not-necessarily sexual fantasies. There’s predators who get off on the idea of taking a depressed girl and becoming her “savior”.
There’s people who get off to feet and fucking statues, you best believe there’s predators who get immense satisfaction from mental games against vulnerable girls/women even if they’re not (directly) sexual. And even if those things aren’t sexual at all to you, it will fuck you up. Because you’ll know or feel that you’re being used against your will, that you’re not being treated as a human, you’ll feel trapped, you’ll feel controlled, you’ll feel hopeless and disgusted with what he’s turning you into.
It’s about control, it’s about possession, it’s about ownership of who you are, it’s about having the perfect doll to play with.
It’s about you becoming mentally, emotionally, intellectually, socially dependent on them. It’s about a boost of their egos.
Regardless of your age, but especially if you’re considerably younger than him, and you see signs of him being fixated on this, RUN AS SOON AS YOU CAN.
Can people reblog this version? Because I’m tired of people who supposedly care about abuse victims dropping any concern and compassion for female victims of grooming as soon as a girl turns 18 like she wasn’t a literal kid five minutes ago.
An absolute fucking QUEEN!!!
