I learned a new word today
Tinhat.
It takes it’s name from people who wear tinfoil hats to prevent the government/aliens from using microwave or radio transmissions to read their minds.
In fandom parlance, it refers to people who believe that two celebrities are involved in a romantic and sexual relationship but are forced to keep it secret because they’ve signed a contract with their management company/production company. The pairing may have never given any indication that they’re dating each other, they’ve possibly even denied it in interviews, and are dating other people, but still the tinhat believes that these two people are in love with each other.
The term was coined as a sobriquet for Lord of the Rings fans who believed Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Dominic Monaghan (Merry) were in love, but forced to keep their relationship secret by New Line, the production company behind LOTR; Though the phenomenon predates DomLijah. I remember various forms of it in my early fandom days.
Probably the best know Tinhat pairing is the so called ‘Larry’ pairing of Harry and Louis from One Direction; their fans have been very vocal about their opinions especially on Twitter. It seems likely that the band members were aware of it, and played it up a little, at least in the beginning. It fueled interest in the band.
The majority of tinhatted pairings are same sex couples - Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles from Supernatural or Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, or Chris Colfer and Darren Criss from Glee, for example. There are examples of tinhatting in opposite pairings too - Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliff, and I’m going to argue Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. I know they did actually date for a long time, but after they broke up a number of their shippers refused to accept their relationship was over and are convinced the pictures of Stewart kissing directer were faked and that since then Kristen has given birth to Rob’s daughter. And of course, there’s the pairing that drove me to google this term, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson AKA Joshifer.
The people who ship these pairings spend hours scrutinising every picture, GIF, video and interview they can find for evidence. They scour social media for mentions and sightings of their idols. Items of clothes and tattoos are forensically examined for further proof. They feed each others theories, creating elaborate narratives about when and how they couple first began seeing each other and how their relationship has developed.
Taken in isolation, some of the ‘evidence’ collected by tinhat shippers can seem pretty convincing. The thing is when you look at a few tinhat pairings together, a very clear pattern emerges. None of the claims made by the Tinhat shippers are unique. They are all the same. They all follow the same five-step formula.
The Powers That Be (management/production company/TV network) have forced the couple to sign a contract preventing them from making their relationship public. Usually to prevent the (male) stars from coming out as gay because TPTB fear their brand would be damaged if their stars were gay. But it applies to straight couples too.
Everybody is involved in the conspiracy. Colleagues, co-stars, friends and family. The media knows all about it, but are being kept quiet by the powerful PTB who threaten them into silence. Even random fans who are lucky enough to meet the celebrities or get selfies with them are involved in the conspiracy. They’re only mentioning that one half of the couple was buying apples at the grocery store and have promised not to tell you that the other half was also there. Yes, that’s OTP’s #2′s reflection in that pair of sunglasses.
While the couple is really, really in love/living together/married/with child, they are in fake relationships with other people to cover keep their real relationship secret. Sometimes they’re forced into the fauxmance by the evil PTB to perpetuate the idea that the stars are straight, or they’re only doing it to promote another project, or are being blackmailed.
The couple is keeping their relationship secret for now, but as soon as their contract is over, they’ll stop hiding and come out in public as a couple. The couple are always on the verge of coming out.
The couple show their disdain for TPTB and the contract they’ve signed by sending secret messages and using codes that only they, and their oh so observant shippers, will recognise. Yes, that tattoo is a secret message to show how much they love each other. Oh look, they both have the same model of the most widely used mobile phone in the world, it’s proof. The vaguely similar shirts they’re both wearing are a sign. They both shop in the same multinational supermarket chain, it can only mean one thing - married!
Of course, eventually the tour ends, or the show is cancelled or the last movie is released and there’s still no sign of the pairing going public. They continue to lead separate lives, dating other people. Even the most die-hard shippers accept that there’s no relationship and move on, or convince themselves that
There’s nothing original or unique about any of these ‘relationships’. Joshifer is no more real than Larry or J2 or DomLijah. It could be copy and pasted from the tinhat playbook.

Larries think that antis think that Louis is a bad father because they consider everyone who doesn't believe in Larry an anti. There's a lot of people on Twitter, tumblr, Facebook, celeb websites and forums who know Larry is nonsense and who trash Louis all the time for being a shitty dad. Those are all antis in larries' minds.
I really don’t follow any of that stuff so I don’t know. My perception from generic Daily Mail type comments is people think he’s doing a good job so far.
The media definitely doesn’t trash him at all.
Larries claim this is all being done as a smear campaign to make him look like a neglectful father, therefore it should actually be lead by ANY media story claiming this. An obvious thing would be getting Briana to counter claim in her custody dispute that Louis is a terrible neglectful absent father, thus getting the media to write stories about it. That would be the easiest thing in the world to do if this were all an elaborate fake set up for the one specific purpose of smearing him.
There’s absolutely nothing. It’s all invented Larrie fantasies.
In real life everyone thinks he seems to be doing a good job of stepping up and seeking as much custody as possible. Nobody in real life is going “when he’s papped with his baby he doesn’t smile which means he hates him or the baby is fake” or “a young first time millionaire father goes on a lads vacation as his baby gets well taken care of by his mother at home, this proves he’s barely a father at all and hates him” the way Larries fantasize they do.
I’m still waiting to find out when a child has ever been used as a smear campaign or punishment for any celebrity by their management team. Literally any time this has ever happened to any celebrity in history ever. @larries I’m right here, hit me up with these stories!
One time I asked a Larrie to show me a single article that has trashed Louis or his behaviour since becoming a father and they couldn't come up with a single link except one to a TMZ article about a custody battle which I think Briana's family said was rubbish anyway. I don't know how they thought Louis potentially seeking more time with his son proved that Louis is a bad father and Freddie is totally a stunt. It makes no sense. Larries have claimed that the media has made out Louis to be a horrible father but can't provide a single source. They also claim that Briana's family has trashed Louis when they've done nothing but praise him as a father so far. Besides the Briana shading Danielle on Twitter there seems to be literally no obvious drama between Louis and Briana, and even if there is tension between them it's totally normal for separated co parents or even marriage parents to disagree on how to raise their children. So, if like there is tension it doesn't make either of them horrible parents. (I just find it interesting that Larries are trying to justify their hate for a young family by criticising every move the parents make in an attempt to make them look bad because at this point they know Freddie is real and Louis is the father but they're just gasping at anything that they think justifies the way they treat a baby and his parents while fuelling their fantasy that Louis and Harry will come out and live happily ever after.)
At the end of the day the only people on the Internet claiming Louis or Briana are terrible parents or that there are any articles at all criticising their parenting are Larries. Larries are the only one with any reason to want to pass judgment on a young family finding their way. I haven't even seen the trashiest of tabloids claim Louis is a horrible father.
It's all just Larries lying to themselves in order to justify the way they treat this young family.

“We’re closer than ever.”
Closer to what exactly? I guess this can’t technically be a failed prediction because they don’t indicate what event is supposed to occur. But I’d like to point it out anyway because it’s a blatant example of manipulation and lying by Larries. Antis haven’t been vicious, angry, or pressed in the slightest. At worst, we get annoyed because the bears have given Larries a false sense of hope, but mildly annoyed and angry are two very different things. And most of us have had a good laugh today from watching Larries overreact. We’re talking about a group of people who think that two incredibly busy people have enough time and energy into developing elaborate schemes into sending Larries secret messages via stuffed bears. If Louis and Harry were actually trapped, they’d be better off using that time preparing a lawsuit against Simon. What’s even sadder is that big Larries know we’re not actually angry; there’s a reason why antis cite their sources when they call Larries out and Larries don’t when they call out antis. This is one glimmer of hope for these people in retaining their power for a little longer.
