The second (enginner/scientist/pilot) backup trio AU
None of you guys are indulging in the possibility of all 3 of them being dragged against their will AND with temporary amnesia so as always i gotta do everything myself/j
As someone who has seen both movies, (iron lung three times) here's a few things i see ppl get wrong/ misunderstand:
Simon is missing his left arm, up to the shoulder. Like at the bicep.
Simon is not just a eel, he's fused with the seed and explodes into a tree.
The seed was on the left arm, fused, reversed Pinocchioed him, and got ripped off.
He kills Elli by exploding into a fucking tree.
He met God.
God gave him prophetic visions and fucked him up. Promised Simon would live, and like a Genie, didn't specify how.
Also some time manipulation bullshit was happening.
Homeboy is played by Mark(iplire), who is Korean. (Draw him Korean you cowards /j)
Simon would not necessarily be impressed/ emotinal from looking at stars. In a flashback he's seen stars before, but knows they're ghost light. He would be grateful being able to see them again though.
He WOULD be very emotinal about any plant life. He found a new will to live when he found the little seed. He had a breakdown when the little charm cracked.
His "job" on Eden was to nourish the last tree with the people he killed. Hence his nickname.
There's a lot symbolism regarding trees (the hull window crack)
Simon is resourceful and smart! Like smart smart! Let him be smart woth Rocky and Grace!
Yes, Simon can be aggressive, but is only in situation where his life is threatened. He's also remorseful. He's apologetic and does want to make up for his wrongs, even if it wasn't his fault.
His left eye glows :3
Grace is not a coward.
Like Simon, Grace did not go down without a fight. He ran, yes, but when he was being sedated he shouted how he would sabotage the mission. Do everything he can to make it fail, just so the wouldn't risk putting him on the exhibition.
He is incredibly brave. He did a space walk without training. He trusted rocky that he wouldn't explode in the space bridge. He CLIMBED ON THE BURNING EXTERIOR OF THE HAIL MARY TO RETRIEVE THE COLLECTION DEVICE.
Grace is not a crybaby. He crys for very real, reasonable reasons! When he was betrayed? When they found a solution to save their stars? When Rock gave him a way to return to Earth? It would be weird for him NOT to cry! (Edit: person in the tags you're so right)
He would be scared meeting Simon, but he would not be a coward.
They BOTH have a "This is bigger than me" mentality. They both risked everything to ensure the survival of humanity. They were willing to die.
It's not selfish just wanting to live.
I don't think either of them would have a problem doing anything to survive. (Eating the Taumoeba or Me-burgers)
My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
Currently thinking about Flambert and marriage and how exactly Robert would feel about it.
Because for Robert, it wasn't even in his top 5 life goals. Which mainly consisted of ‘keep going. Feed Beef. Don't die.’
Robert understood that since he was 16 with a father in the ground and a suit that didn't care.
He's never even seen his mom and dad in a room together.
For Flambae, it's not like that. His parents are his favorite story, and it's so obvious it almost aches.
“When my dad’s hair started going gray, he hated it. My mom dyed hers the same shade. He has no idea about it. But he stopped saying it looks bad.”
Robert wonders how it feels, sometimes. To talk about your father and smile. Like he’s made of good memories.
“They got married in my dad’s garage, because they wanted to save money for my mom’s restaurant. My dad made the rings from his favorite car. Melted it down for her. That's SO fucking cool.”
And he says that at 3 AM, in Robert’s kitchen. Hands covered in flour and oil, because Robert was hungry and he wanted dumplings.
And Robert doesn't know why he decides this was the moment.
Maybe it’s the way Flambae says he’ll get him a bed, when they actually go furniture shopping. But until then, there's a blanket fort in his living room. He lets Robert have the comfy pillow.
Maybe it's the way there's always a full bottle of his favorite body wash. Robert said it as a joke. For Flambae, it wasn't.
Maybe it's the way Flambae cheers him on when he pirates a movie, like its innovation at work.
“You wanna give it a shot?”
They both pause. Same exact time. Flambae’s eyes just go big, blinking, and they glow like Chad.
Robert’s lungs burn, from heart to stomach, and he laughs like rust.
“What the fuck?” he whispers to himself, pacing about. “‘Give it a shot.’ What the fuck.”
And Flambae isn't angry about it. His voice does that thing Robert loves, where it softens because he wanted it to.
“Do you want to take it back?”
“No! Of course I don't, but this is my living room, and we just gave Beef a bath and it smells horrible, and I don't even have a ring, and —”
“Robert.” And it's the crackle in Chad’s voice that stops Robert dead. It's the gloss across his eyes, the smile on his face that trembles a little,
“Ask me again so I can say yes, bitch.”
And Robert’s throat shakes, when he gulps. “Will you marry me? Asshole.”
Chad tackles him into a kiss. Which is a strong yes, he thinks.
And when Robert hugs him back, there's rings in his pockets.
I love girl dad Robert so much, but guys please also consider boy dad Robert
Robert would be a wonderful parent to any of his children if he were to have them, but I think, the conscious choice of not naming his son “Robert” like his dad and granddad did, is so incredibly poignant. Their son takes Chad’s last name, and honestly, so does Robert. Their child is given all the resources he could possibly need without any of the pressure or expectations
Whether their child becomes a hero or not would be up to interpretation but he is never meant to felt like he has to die in that suit like Robert did and that is what’s important
Concept: Robert’s dad’s side of the family is Russian. They still follow the unfortunate naming tradition of giving their children the name “Robert”. What makes this situation even more of a tragedy is patronymics. Thus Robert’s full name would probably be Robert Robertovich Robertov
What if Robert grew up with his mom. Living with his dad became too much and when he was murdered, his mom took Robert with her to Korea.
Robert takes her last name when he emigrates. Takes the first name she wanted to give him too, and he feels like he has a fresh start, even if he’s leaving everything behind. He protests at first, knowing that he has a legacy to uphold, but he’s never able to admit how scared he is to have to take the mantle. Deep down, he doesn’t want to die, so he uses the excuse that a minor can’t go against what their parent wants. They leave after the funeral. He takes the Astral Pulse with him
It’s hard at first, relearning the language that he lost, adjusting to an entirely different culture than the one he grew up in, but he learns. There are still struggles, entirely “normal” ones compared to growing up as the third in line to die in the Mecha Man suit, but he’s alive and the weight of his name is off his shoulders. So, why does he still feel heavy?
He still grapples with the guilt of leaving that identity behind, not picking up after his dad passes away. His mom notices, tries to get through to him, tell him that his worth was never the suit. He wants to believe her
Robert still finds his way back to hero work, against his mother’s wishes, because it is so utterly engrained in him to do good. It doesn’t belt that the guilt of leaving the work behind never really left him. Maybe a Korean branch of the GeekSquad, maybe in a different suit with a different name, maybe his mother’s side of the family has its own special artifact that gives their users powers à la Blonde Blazer. He builds a good reputation there. People love him. He’s witty and kind and he cares so deeply for the people he saves. He popular internationally, though Robert never did it for the fame, he finds it all rather shallow, but he likes being able to make children smile and families reunite, so he holds his tongue and waves
He eventually comes back to the US when he finds out that his “Uncle” Elliot has broken out of prison. It’s the one thing that was left unfinished. Robert just needs to do this one last thing, and maybe he’ll finally feel untethered to what was left behind when he moved but in the process, he ends up meeting a group of people that make him want to stay
